Lakers Rumors: Joel Embiid ‘Seriously In Play’ For Lakers At Seven

The Los Angeles Lakers have worked out a number of different prospects during the pre-draft process. It seems as if most have the team pegged for either forward Julius Randle or point guard Marcus Smart, both of whom are expected to be able to contribute immediately.

However, that may change if Joel Embiid is still on the board when the Lakers are on the clock. Embiid was expected to be the top pick in the draft, but foot surgery has dropped his stock some. Now, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers are one of three teams Embiid could end up with:

This is the complete opposite of what the Lakers are believed to be focused on. With Kobe Bryant’s career winding down, the team supposedly wants guys who can step in and contribute right away. Embiid, however, may not be ready to play until 2015.

The talent and potential of Embiid may be too much to pass up for the Lakers. Los Angeles has a history of franchise centers dating back to George Mikan and moving through Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, and Pau Gasol. Embiid could be next in line.

This year’s draft is completely unpredictable. No one knows what will happen, and the Lakers are sure to have some difficult decisions to make once they are on the clock.

OR HOW CAN WE GET THE #1 PICK WITHOUT HAVEING THE #1 PICK ? I KNOW..LETS FAKE AN INJURY AND MAKE SURE WE SLIDE DOWN TO NUMBER 7…AND THEN RECOVER FROM OUR INJURY BEFORE THE START OF THE SEASON…AM I CRAZY OR AM I JUST SMART ? LMAO

    • BULL

I understand your feelings my friend.. but it would be a blessing to get this young man EMBIID.. I actually jump on the bandwagon KU ofcourse behind UCLA, but it was all due to that young man.. I been on yahoo blogging embiid to lakers, embiid to lakers, and for us to actually have a chance to get him its kind of crazy… never seen that happening.. but I would be happy with Gordon, Randall or Smart.. lets wait and see ..

      • Al Haldie

They have a 1 in seven – I would not jump up and down yet…

      • VANDEEZY

I WOULD BE HAPPY WITH ANYONE AT THIS POINT..WHO KNOWS HOW PLAYERS WILL TURN OUT..

      • VANDEEZY

NOT ABOUT FAKING AN INJURY, MAYBE HE DIDNT HAVE ONE TO BEGIN WITH AND WITH A LITTLE EXTRA SIDEPOCKET MONEY TO THE DR. THAT EXAMINED HIM…”SURE, ILL WRITE DOWN WHAT TYPE OF INJURY HE HAD, “SURE LETS JUST KEEP THIS BETWEEN US” AND YOU WILL HAVE SEASON TICKETS TO THE LAKERS FOR LIFE..LMAO

        • Lojik

If this Embiid Conspiracy Dr stuff were true, naturally the team to execute one of the maneuvers would be the Cavaliers. Lets not forget that of the last 4 drafts they are the miracle winners of 3 of those first picks including this year where they stormed from a projected 9th pick to grab the top spot again. All this after they lost a star. The one year they did not get the top pick it happened to go to a new owner who under similar conspiracy scenarios could have been offered a similar deal for the top spot in the purchase of the Hornets, again all this after they lost a star. Thats how they would have justified losing Chris Paul (pending free agent) and sending him over to create another marquee lineup after a bait and switch with the Lakers ( A Big FU to the organization). This creates another possibility with the Lakers now here in the draft, seeing as how all this above lead to the Lakers losing a star in Chris Paul (the nba felt another franchise needed a boost before them). This is CRAY CRAY for sure and clearly i am stretching stuff way way out for fun but damn all this could be connected, very far fetched indeed though because there are more simple ways of rigging something, but this way would involve benefits to multiple teams so I don’t know, maybe Silver and the powers that be are staring to become outside the box thinkers. That was fun. Amazingly as much of a randomness that this is… it doesn’t change the fact that all these connections exist in reality.

    • Walter

Dude i saw Joel Embiid on Twitter he said I’m a Laker.

      • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Allegedly, that was his friend typing that.

        • LakeShooo

          lol

  • Kale Pinder

    Please…….Embiid, Randle, or Smart……..PLEASE

  • Cuco

I really want M. Smart, but Embiid could be a franchise player. Hopefully if they do get him, they’ll go hard after Lowry. The team needs athleticism at the Point, here’s hoping they figure something out

    • BULL

IVE BEEN BEGGING FOR EMBID.. FX WILL HEAL.. MAN PLEASE LET HIM FALL TO US ..

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

I agree here. I’m a big fan of the Lakers taking Smart. But, there will be top tier PGs available this offseason and next. I don’t see any potential franchise centers available. But man, I do love Smart’s defense.

  • Fernando

If Joel Embbid is on the board available at #7 you gotta take no matter who is on the board i don’t care if it’s a young Tim Duncan,Karl Malone,Michael Thompson,LeBron James,Kevin Durant,Blake Griffin,Chris Paul,Andrew Wiggins,Jabari Parker you fucking take Joel Embiid no matter who is on the board, that’s how highly i think of Joel Embiid.DO IT MITCH!

  • BULL

Embiid, Gordon, Smart, or Randall man either one would be great.. but I would def trade 7th pick for MCW and T. Young frm Phili

    • Max

Not if Joel Embiid is on the board i would take the big man and hang the phone up on any trade requests then i would change my cell phone number and go on a vacation to Hawaii and sip on a martini knowing i just got the most impressive college big man with the most potential of anyone since ya years ago.It would be a great the Lakers making out like bandits.

      • Al Haldie

They need 11 more players to make a TEAM – take a break…

      • lakers72

        since greg oden ? hahha

    • jhernandez1981

the Carter-Williams for 7 doesn’t seem like that great a deal with this draft class. Randall and Smart look like better long term prospects, and if Embiid is still on the block… That’s got to be causing some migraines for GMs. The back fracture and broken foot are hard to overlook, but if they dont mean long term problems that guys is going to be a force.

  • They call me Pringles

Joel Embiid would do great learning from Kareem. Kareem taught Bynum to keep the ball high in the post and be patient, he virtually became unstoppable down low. I mean, how many players has stopped Bynum in the post throughout his years injured or not? Garnett and Perkins couldn’t even stop him. Embiid’s tall, he’s long, he better listen to Kareem.

    • Rick Mathews

That’s why the Celtics “championship*” has that asterisk. They “won” it without Bynum playing.

  • Odenalloveragain

Yes, and it will be a serious mistake. The Red flags on this guy can be seen from freaking Jupiter. I can see the finger pointing and blame game in a few years when this guy goes bust. And even funnier will be the fans here in Lakersnation who are all for Embiid all of a sudden go “I FREAKING SAID IT, THEY SHOULD’ NOT HAVE DRAFTED THIS GUY, WHAT MORE ISSUES DID THEY NEED TO SEE TO AVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE BLAH BLAH”

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Part of me wonders if his injuries are in part due to such little experience on the ball court. What happens if a team gets him in the weight room, gets him on an improved diet, and works with him? Are these stress fractures the type of thing someone can overcome?

      • Chrmngblly

Odds are 85% FOR A FULL RECOVERY. Is that good?

        • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Where’d you read that? Also, we’re sure he’ll recover, but will it become re-aggravated? Is this a sign that his bones are weak? Those are things that run through my mind, and I’m just some random dude lol.

          • Chrmngblly

Somebody said those kind of injuries work out about 85% of the time, if I recall correctly. Now what? Will Jim Buss have the balls to swing the bat? —-or play it safe? It takes balls to play it safe, too, but who would want to be known as the dufus that passed on Embiid or Michael Jordan, you know?

  • AC

If Embiid does fall to us, we gotta wish for an insane amount of luck in the future. This guy already has injury scares and it’s too risky. Injuries have been kicking the Lakers in the nuts for the past 2 seasons, so if he does fall to us all we can do is just hope he heals well and injuries don’t become frequent in his career. Knowing the Lakers’ history with injuries, it’ll be scary to draft him and I’d rather we take Marcus Smart (we need a young PG anyways). But nontheless, if we do get Embiid, i’ll be happy. Successor to Kobe as the Franchise Cornerstone right there

  • quickster007

Wow, if the Lakers draft Joel Embiid its like similar to Andrew Bynum. Practically, the whole time Andrew Bynum was a Laker. He was collecting cash and injured every season. If the Lakers draft Embiid. I just hope the Lakers medical Staff look at Joel Embiid and see if his injury heals in time. Jim Buss you drafted Andrew Bynum. I hope you look at Joel Embiid and hopefully not as blind as you did with Andrew Bynum. This is the biggest test for the Front Office. If they can’t do it right they might as well sell the team. The late Jerry Buss was a legend. I hope his children has his talent time will tell if it runs in the family.

  • Matt Martini

No Embiid Back and foot problems. Why chance it? Id go after Exum, first then Doug Mcdermott then Smart.

WHY are people not talking about Doug Mcdermott? That guy could come in first year and average 15-20 points. He’s got a fadeaway jumer like Dirk and can score with the best of them.

    • Matt Martini

Id re-sign Jordan Hill and Meeks. Trade Paul for first round draft pick. Draft either Exum or Smart. Next Draft Mcdermott with from Pau deal. Sign K.Lowrey and Z Randolph. Should have enough money to lure EITHER Lebron or Melo.

      • vdogg

what world are you living in??

        • Jack

          Lol

  • KB24

If we draft embiid re sign pau swap marshall for payton….PAYTON-KOBE-DENG/LBJ/MELO-PAU-EMBIID 2 7 footers TAKE THAT

  • KB24

If we draft SMART, KEEP NASH TO MENTOR HIM COZ HIS COURT VISION IS LIMITED,HNASH CAN IMPROVE SMART’s PG SKILLS AND 3pt shooting

  • TheTruthKills

I certainly hope Embiid is available. He’s a steal at 7 even with the injuries.

  • BobeKryant

Once again the most unreliable Laker info ever. Congrats LakersNation for continuing to suck
