Lakers Rumors: Head Coach Mike D’Antoni Will Return Next Season

Over the past week or so, the fate of head coach Mike D’Antoni has been up in the air with no clear indication on whether the Los Angeles Lakers will keep him on the sidelines for next season.

Lakers Nation Store Is Back! Check Out The Latest Gear!

Reportedly, the Lakers brass may have made the decision to keep D’Antoni moving forward according to Mark Heisler of the OC Register:

After 10 days of soul searching, the key figures in Lakers management are agreed on bringing back D’Antoni for a third season as coach, a source with knowledge of the deliberations told the Register.

Although no official announcement has been made by the Lakers organization, it appears D’Antoni will remain in the team’s plans of at least one more season. D’Antoni’s contract for next season is guaranteed at the amount of $4 million to go along with a team option for the following season.

With D’Antoni now apparently in the fold heading into the off-season, the questions remains on whether Pau Gasol will re-sign with the team and what free agents the Lakers may be targeting to fit his system.

There’s no doubt about the fact that retaining D’Antoni will have an impact on the players that return and the players that show interest in joining the team in free agency.

As a long time Laker hater all I have to say is this is the best news ever!Quote from a Lakers hater.

Lakers haters are dancing the streets once upon a time the Lakers were the most powerful force in the NBA now they see Mike D’Antoni coming back and they know they all got the season series against the Lakers in the pocket.Top 5 protected pick thank god it is we need it.

All Lakers haters are all partying and every website is going crazy dancing and rejoicing in a celebration now that the once all mighty Lakers are being run into the ground faster than a Mike D’Antoni 7 seconds or less offensive set.Lakers are in deep deep trouble. The Lakers are in serious help of a new management team. The inexperience of the new ownership team is showing itself by retaining D’Antoni.

  • Lakers Homer

Damn this is the worst Lakers era ever.I am pissed.

  • disappointed fan

Disgusting.Very very disappointed and frustrated fan.will boycott lakers games.

  • Sylvia Ross

I cannot believe how arrogant this azz hole is. He now wants the Lakers to guarantee him to a fourth year. If they do pringles must have something on somebody. I cannot believe that anybody who has lost more games than this butt hole could demand anything.

  • Bill

As a long time Laker hater all I have to say is Yahoo!Another Lakers hater said this tonight.

Lakers haters are acting like they won the NBA championship after hearing this news about Mike D’Antoni coming back to destroy i mean coach the Lakers.

  • Bill

During conversations with the Los Angeles Lakers over the past 10 days, embattled coach Mike D’Antoni has asked them to pick up the team option on the fourth year of his current contract, sources with knowledge of the situation have told ESPN

  • Bill

MDA wants to comeback for 2 more years at last the cat is out of the bag the Lakers are sinking faster than the Queen Mary ever did.

  • Efrain

The Lakers franchise is sinking faster than the Titanic ship. It’s OVER.

  • Efrain

Lunatic Jim Buss you have done it again this can’t be fixed you idiot. Please Donald Duck Sterling buy the Lakers from the fat boy Jim Buss.

    • comrade24

bet you wish you could remove this comment after what Sterling said lol

  • Pablo Martin

The worst move in LAL history,—LET’S BOYCOTT–I read some comments about the next year draft, and We dont have a draft pickl next year! is in phoenix(Nash trade).
I hope that is fake(FIRE MDA PLEASE!)

    • JW

Yeah i am 100% down to boycott the Lakers.Yes the pick next season is top 5 protected but otherwise we lose the pick to the Suns.Yea man Lakers fans will probably set up a Lakers Fire Mike D’Antoni street protest.Or at the very least protest the entire Lakers franchise in the streets.

      • michiganlaker

i’m with you guys in boycotting the games. spread the word!!

        • Levels

          I stand with you guys.

    • Levels

Absolutely… I will not watch or support them…

  • LegendInMyMind

    Well, there goes Pau Gasol…

  • Jabari

Lakers are tanking and don’t want to pay 2 coaches so they kept MDA.Next season Kobe plays 10 games or fewer and the Lakers go 30-52 a 3 game improvement gets MDA a 10 year extension.Jim Buss and Mike D’Antoni the new NBA marriage made in hell.Lakers need to get better by a ton they suck and are a mess.

  • J Taylor

    Interestingly enough…
As I write this, there are 177 comments, and not a single comment in favor of keeping D’antoni.
    Statistics say, 0.00 support.

  • China Man

Most deserving coach in NBA history to be fired.

  • Security

Just let us know when he is fired and we are waiting and ready.

  • Security

Mike D’Antoni is a joke and he has handcuffed the Lakers with his terrible coaching style and his bad habits only get worse day by day.Fire D’Antoni the clown.

  • Donetoni Get Fired

Donetoni is junk and he must be fired i hate his silly face and can’t stand watching his retarded funky smirk. What a nightmare this has become for Lakers Nation.I will never watch another Lakers game as long as Donetoni is the coach that’s a promise.Yes i will comeback to the Lakers as a fan one day again.Fire Donetoni!

  • Donetoni Get Fired

WTF?This guy is still the coach?????Who is the reporter seems like a old timer man that is just making stuff up.What the hell is he talking about?D’Antoni is a goner or at least he should be out as coach in LAL.

  • Donetoni Get Fired

Donetoni good riddance.Get outta here 3 strikes and you’re out of the NBA.Strike in Phoenix for not winning a championship with all that talent.Strike in New York for not making the playoffs and being terrible as a team every season.Strike in Los Angeles for only winning 45 games with Kobe,Dwight,Pau,Nash and overplaying Kobe until he tore his Achilles Tendon and then in 2013-2014 leading the Lakers to their worst season ever. You struck out batter batter YOU’RE OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!!!

  • Jom

This Mike D’Antoni situation of him being hated and a lame ass duck coach reminds me of how the 49ers fans hated Mike Singletary and wanted him fired.Or when Lions fans wanted Wayne Fontes fired.D’Antoni is less popular than Bill Buckner.

  • Jom

Not sure how bad this coach really is i think he is the worst coach ever.

  • Zimmeredge

What did you guys expect? Few days ago, They have made an article called skill ball on their official website justifying d’antoni’s choices and way to play the game. The guy explained that with the right combination of skills and athleticism you have a perfect combination of talent. Plus they wońt use the provision on Nash. And you have almost all the locker room (except Hill and gasol) supporting their coach. What do you want them to do. Even Bryant openly admitted that he didńt have a full season because he did not have training camp or because of injuries. I guess it´s gonna ok if we hire a dedicated défensive coach. With Dan gone we have to find another assistant coach. If players were able to remain fit and healthy we could have play better.
Now we need to convince gasol to stay here. Handle our draft fine and get one good player from the fa. If gasol dońt wanna get back well you have players like Monroe, gortat or Okafor available. You have embiid from the draft. So it´s gonna be fine.
And if we just suck again then we are going back in the lottery with another good talented player to pick (Okafor, Alexander etc etc)

    • comrade24

FINALLY someone not being an idiot and calling for boycotts on here. Nice to see. If he is coming back, let’s move on. They need to bring in an assistant now that Dan’s gone who can focus on improving transition defense in D’Antoni’s system. All these weak ass people on here whining and being pessimistic is just pathetic. Look at the bright side. The roster is going to be a definite improvement from last year one way or another. We have opportunities this offseason be a lot better or at the least a little better.

  • lakerfan

    Dumbtoni + Kobe,K.Love,Gasol = ?

  • Vigs

Unfortunately for Kobe next year will be a wash. Top ten pick again in 15 maybe Love and then they go for it in 16 with a new coach. Thats the only reason besides money that you can bring this guy back. No defense so so offense and no clue. Its gonna be a very long year and a half for us Laker fans.

    • Michael Ruiz

Next years pick is only top 5 protected. Meaning that if the lakers end up with the 6th pick, or higher, it goes to the Suns. And as long as kobe is playing it wont be top 5

  • ranfan

Stop playing with our emotions lol

  • Larry

everyone should boycott laker games I for sure will if D’antoni is here, by them not getting ride of him shows they dont care about us the fans so we have to show them by not going to games

    • michiganlaker

i completely agree with you. we need to spread the word around to boycott the games.

  • michiganlaker

boycott the games if you’re not happy with this decision.

  • Wwwiejd

O yeah another top pick year rock n roll baby

  • Levels

I will not be supporting the Lakers this season nor watch one game.

    • michiganlaker

      standing with you brother

      • Levels

I’ve already stop following all Laker Nation websites and any and all things that are Lakers on the web… hopefully the 1.7 million followers will stop follow also and this will just the beginning to make them understand that fans matter.

  • Kobefan

BOYCOTT! Don’t buy Laker tickets!! Dodger fans did it!

  • LakersHeatBeef

Why are all these Lakers might trade Kobe Bryant rumors popping up everywhere the last 24 hours or so???Why are fans and media saying this stuff about Kobe???Come on now Kobe has a no trade clause and no team is willing to pay that huge contract with the new CBA in place.Kobe is staying put so please stop with the Kobe is getting traded or demanding a trade gossip, won’t happen.

  • Michael Keith Thomas

I’ve been at Laker fan for many many years and when we had MrBuss running this organization these kind of things just did not happen now we have his son running this organization and everything that could go wrong has gone wrong he’s not his dad nowhere even close to being his dad his decision making stinks and if he’s not real careful he’s going to lose a lot of fans he’s going to find it really tough to fill the seats at the Staples Center

  • Michael Ruiz

Lakers Nation Fans need to stop proclaiming that next year is going to be okay because we will tank for next year. Next years draft pick belongs to the Phoenix Suns ( Part of the Steve Nash deal.) Its only ours if we land in the top 5. But as long as Kobe is playing there will be no way in hell we will get the top 5 pick. Next year looks to be a bust.

  • Michael Ruiz

By the way this will be my second year in boycotting. I hope all of you join. We all became Lakers Fans because Dr. Jerry Buss made this team into WINNERS!! Nothing less and nothing more. His love, his passion for his team WINNING trumped any extra dollar he could save. It looks as if Jim Buss is the opposite. By the way those great trades that were made in the past were constructed by Mitch. Not Jim. People need to stop giving credit to Jim for the past great trades as well.

    • michiganlaker

i’m right behind you. you got my support in boycotting.

  • JEK

There’s No D’ on his name right? Mike Antoni

  • Deuce

Well mike definitely deserves another chance. The lakers GM put together possibly the worse roster in the league. No coach could have won with the garbage that the lakers had. Mitch Kup has not done a good job of putting a winning team together but mike d will take the blame. I feel for mike.

  • Levels

I am unfollowing Lakers Nation until MDA is out of Lakers Nation… it’s been fun debating/ arguing and such with some of you but I have to put my words into action, even if it does nothing… I’ll be back when Dantoni is gone.. be blessed all!!

  • Danny E. Pagan

Welcome back Mike! Anybody who knows basketball knows you are one of the most influential coaches in the last decade and responsible for setting the foundation for making the NBA fun to watch again. As Erick SPolstra have said “there wouldn’t be a Miami Heat without Mike D’antoni”. I rather watch guys move the ball and shoot a 3 point shot than getting the ball to a lumbering big man so he can play 1 on 1 basketball… and all this nonsense about Dwight leaving because of D’antoni is ridiculous as Houston plays “small ball” or “skill ball” as well. He left cuz he rather play with Harden than Kobe and that would be the case for most young superstars in the league.

Mike D’antoni is a former NBA coach of the year, former USA basketball assistant, and former euroleague champion. I don’t think there is anybody out there who is realistically AVAILABLE with a better accolades.

  • AnCi3nTALi3n

Jim is no Jerry Buss the apple fell far from this tree on this one, maybe his adopted and that’s why there’s no purple running through those veins!! But since D’antony did such a fabulous job in New York, and now a stupendous job in LA give him an extension, that way all the great players will flock to him. You can score 100 points a game but you’re not going to win if you’re giving up 110! I’m boycotting the Lakers, I can see it was heartbreaking for millions of fans what this joker is doing to Laker nation. And we have to wait 3 more yrs for the bleeding to stop. f*** that when that s*** blows up in your face next year get your s*** packing all 3 Owner GM and coach f****** losers!!!!

  • comrade24

Lakers fans, y’all are acting like a bunch of whiney pathetic emo kids. smh

  • Jay Brodes

i dont approve this at all. if i am kobe i boycott til pringles is fired..period!!

  • http://www.2alegacyconsulting.com/blog Terry Shelton

Ridiculous! There goes the chances to get another free agent. No Melo for sure. Watching the playoffs without the Lakers is bad enough. Now next season doomed too!

  • ersliva

NO WAY WOULD I KEEP HIM AS COACH….YES THE TEAM WAS INJURED…BUT HE LOST MANY GAMES DO TO HIS COACHING…IF HE WAS MORE DEFENSIVE MINDED WE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER….BUT HES NOT…AND HE PUNISHES PLAYERS WHO ACTUALLY ARE PLAYING GOOD DEFENSE AND SETTING TEAMMATES UP OFFENSIVELY BUT NO SHOOTING….I HATE COACHES WHO CANT COACH A TEAM AT BOTH ENDS..HIS SYSTEM DOESNT EVEN SET UP A DEFENSE….THE TRIANGLE OFFENSE WAS FAR MORE EFFECTIVE…IT SCORED MORE POINTS…IT DIDNT INJURE PLAYERS AS MUCH…AND IT SET UP A DEFENSE….IN ALL ACTUALLITY THE TRIANGLE IS A DEFENSIVE MINDED OFFENSE THAT SETS BOTH ENDS UP….AND ITS A SYSTEM THAT CAN BE RUN AT VARIOUS SPEEDS DEPENDING UPON WHOS ON THE FLOOR….BUT WE NO LONGER HAVE SAID OPTION AS LONG AS THIS….POOR EXCUSE OF A COACH IS CALLING THE SHOTS…NOT ONLY WILL WE LOSE GASOL BUT BRYANT WILL WANT TO BE TRADED AND NOBODY CAN TRADE FOR HIM…SO BRYANT WILL END UP GETTING BENCHED OR FORCING D’ANTONI TO BE FIRED DURING THE SEASON….EITHER WAY IT WILL BE ANOTHER LOSING SEASON…WITH BRYANT PISSED….SO FIRE THIS GUY NOW AND STOP PLAYING AROUND….AND FACE ITY…THE LAKERS WILL KEEP LOSING MONEY AS LONG AS HES THE COACH….I WOULDNT EVEN BUY SEASON TICKETS IF HES THE COACH AGAIN….

    • ersliva

I EVEN REFRAMED FROM WATCHING LAKER GAMES THIS SEASON….NORMALLY I CAN GET 30 LAKER GAMES A YEAR….BUT THIS YEAR THEY CANCELLED MANY DUE TO THEIR PLAY….AND THE GAMES I DID WATCH I COULDNT EVEN FINISH BECAUSE OF HIS BAD COACHING….AND IM A DIE HARD LAKER FAN….AND THIS LITTERALLY SUCKS HAVING A COACH WHO HAS LITTERALLY HAS STATED THAT HE WISHES THE DEMISE OF THE LAKER ORGANIZATION AND HOPES HE HAS A PART OF SEEING IT HAPPEN…AND GUESS WHAT THEY LET THIS JERK DO JUST THAT….

      • Robert L. I.

        I boycotted simular.

  • 888watt

Just because the Lakers were terrible doesn’t mean D’Antoni is a bad coach. He is a really good coach, and he would not need to look around too much to find a job. He’s one of the best coaches out there. He just coached for a crappy team this year. Hopefully next year they will have better players.

    • Robert L. I.

What are you talking about? “He’s a really good coach”. Here’s a little known fact about D’Antoni, he’s never had a winning record wherever he’s coached!

So what makes him so good? The one year when he was voted ‘Coach of the Year’? Phoenix got their ass handed to them that year in the playoffs.

So how/why is he so good?

Here’s a paragraph from the Bleacher Report written last year that helps put some perspective on this joker.

“D’Antoni comes to the table with a predetermined system that does not always capitalize on the talent at his disposal. Thus, it’s a little difficult to make the case that the Lakers need to retain his services going forward.”

Short and perfectly to the point!

I don’t want a coach that can’t utilize players talent. He sure didn’t use D-Howard, or Pau, or Kaman, or Hill. And he runs his players into injury. Unlike P. Jackson he can’t/won’t/doesn’t know how to pace a team. D’Antoni is very one dimensional. Poor effing us.

Jim Buss resign immediately. You will be so sorry, you tiny minded man.

  • KBMamba

I’ll be back when Jim, Mitch & Mike are gone. Lakers Forever, but the three stooges have got to go!

  • Damon

Lakers FO thought they were slick as I just saw this official rolling across the screen on ESPN. “Lets announce it during this Steling controversy ,maybe they wont notice….guess what we did”Laker fan since 1980, now not watching or participating anything Laker until Dantoni is fired…Perhaps Lakers FO is the same as Sterling, fire Mike Brown in 5 games but give Dantoni 2 years now 3…HMMMMMMMMM….NAME 1 Black Laker coach aside from Mike Brown, please dont mention Magic….go ahead Ill wait…SMDH

    • Sylvia Ross

I feel the exact same way and said so in a post that there is a difference in the way Mike Brown was treated . pringles, should have gone 82 games ago but as we can see they’re keeping him. Not only that pringles is asking for the fourth year to be picked up. They told us what he wanted but on that site we cannot give our opinion. I wonder why? pringles, is a butt hole and the FO knows it.

  • nlruizjr

well I guess another season of frustrations, I don’t understand what the FO stands to gain by this decision, they will lose a lot more than they gain by keeping MD, what quality player will want to come to a loser team and organization. Jeanie I thought you had more sense but I guess I gave you more credit than what you deserve.
