Lakers Rumors: D’Antoni Won’t Take Marshall Job, Returning To Lakers?

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

The speculation continues to swirl about the immediate future of head coach Mike D’Antoni. The fans are livid about the result of this season and want change immediately, but D’Antoni has one more year guaranteed in his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Once the exit meetings came to a close last week, GM Mitch Kupchak let it be known that D’Antoni has two more years left on his deal (last year team option). Kupchak said he and Jim Buss will take some time off and will talk about D’Antoni’s future in a few weeks.

Lakers Nation Store Is Back! Check Out The Latest Gear!

Apparently, D’Antoni’s future may not be as uncertain as once thought. A report surfaced on Tuesday night about Marshall University moving on in their search for a head coach because D’Antoni is remaining with the Lakers according to the Charleston Daily Mail:

Sources told the Charleston Daily Mail on Tuesday afternoon that D’Antoni will remain the head coach of the Lakers and, thus, will not be in position to accept the vacant Herd hoops job.

D’Antoni is staying put. Hamrick is moving on.

After the season mercifully came to an end for the Lakers, the consensus was that few could do a better job than D’Antoni given the circumstances. The Lakers were ripped apart by injuries over the last two years with this season being worse than the last.

Along with dealing with nonstop criticism for enforcing his style of play, D’Antoni had to deal with losing Dwight Howard in free agency, Steve Nash playing in only a handful of games and Kobe Bryant suffering another season-ending injury only six games after returning from a torn Achilles tendon.

Although the fans have not been fond of D’Antoni ever since he was hired over Phil Jackson last season, the Lakers brass may have been sympathetic and willing to let him return for at least one more season. Nothing is confirmed as of yet, but signs appear to be pointing to D’Antoni returning.

All these Mike D’Antoni apologists are fools.D’Antoni apologist know he is a lame and he sucks on defense as a coach but they keep talking shit because they want to see the Lakers suffer and lose since they are just idiots in the first place losers.FIRE MIKE D’ANTONI FIRE MIKE D’ANTONI.FUCK D’ANTONI HE IS SO STUPID.

        • Dino Madness

D’Antoni was one of the reasons Dwight left so he could only blame himself. There were many other reasons including Kobe but D’Antoni was one of the main reasons he chose to leave.

Jim Buss is real cheap and most likely will not want to pay for a high quality coach that he can’t control. If Jim Buss is the one who keeps picking the coaches we might end up being a terrible team for years to come. So whether is D’Antoni or Jim Buss next poor choice we will remain in a bad place until someone else who is better at picking coaches gets the power to make that selection.

Lakers are seriously fucked if this is true.

It’s like playing with 6 rounds in the cylinder. You can’t possibly win. There is NO DEFENSE…..

      • Spitfire

NO DEFENSE cos Pau cant play D. Bunch of D-Leaguers. I bet you all didnt even watched the backstage Lakers about MDA who prioritize defense first.
Ooops wait?! You dont know that cos you all just whine and talk shit.

            You ought to know,idiot.

        • 3339

he can say it all he wants, but that doesn’t mean he knows how to coach defense.

          • Josh

Haven’t most of these guys been playing organized basketball since they were 8 years old? Even if the coach didn’t know how to coach defense, the players should be able to communicate with each other and figure something out. The fact is: they just aren’t good enough. There’s a reason no other team wanted half of these guys.

          • Duane

Mike D’Antoni is notorious for having bad defensive teams throughout his coaching years right up until now.I really don’t want to give all his defensive rankings since it’s horrific and i am sure anyone wanting to can look it up.It’s just obvious his system focuses on offense and is designed to create more possessions by shooting the ball quickly with 15 or more seconds on the clock.7 seconds or less was a Mike D’Antoni offense in Phoenix,i know that defense improves drastically with less possessions during a game.

So a slow tempo offense like the Triangle or Princeton will dwindle down the score automatically,so it’s more on the style of play. The Lakers were horrid last season on defense.

          • Josh

His defenses have usually ranked in the neighborhood of 15-20. Not good, but much better than anyone will acknowledge. 7 Seconds or Less was Phoenix. His offensive mantra since then is “The Ball Finds Energy.” Play hard, look for a good shot, and take it. If it’s 7 seconds, fine; if not, keep moving the ball until you find something.

          • comrade24

i can’t remember exactly when so i won’t fudge a number here but i know it’s been quite awhile since a team has even made it to the Finals without being ranked top 10 in both offense and defense. it just doesn’t happen. The defense needs to improve dramatically but a lot of that will come down to player personnel. D-leaguers can’t guard nba players. point blank. That said, there needs to be some hirings and firings within the coaching staff, but that doesn’t necessarily mean D’Antoni

          • Josh

The Lakers were the #11 offense when they beat the Celtics. The Thunder were the #11 defense when they lost to the Heat. That’s based on efficiency, which means a lot more to me than total points, which is decided by pace rather than play.

          • nlruizjr

so if MD returns, the Lakers should inbound and turn around and toss a full court shot, 3 sec. or less, hell no one will be around the basket any how because MD doesn’t coach D, if this is true, the FO deserves to lose more FANS !!!

          • 3339

dude dantoni had Kobe and Dwight and the team still sucked, especially on defense.

          • Josh

Dwight was a joke in the defensive paint. I consider him a “selfish” defensive player. He doesn’t communicate, leaves his man, and jumps at EVERYTHING hoping to block shots into the stands. Which really accomplishes nothing, and usually led to dunks by his man right behind his back. I’d say it is well-documented that Kobe is old, and not a good defensive player anymore, though he can turn it up for short stretches of games.

          • Lakerlakes

And when was the last time you had the chance to watch kobe play D on a daily basis? The short stretch of games was this whole season lol

          • Josh

Kobe has been on the decline defensively for several years. He can turn it on for a few minutes at a time, but he hasn’t been a shut down defender for years. He just doesn’t have the quickness to stay in front of this new breed of NBA guards. He cheats off his man, plays passing lanes, and gives up a lot of backdoor cuts.

          • Holly

I guess you didn’t watch the All Star game last year where he made it his goal not to score high, but to play D & stay on LeBron James all night. Has everyone forgotten the Mamba Swat?! Lmao That was classic & he played D all night.

          • Josh

I watched it. Aren’t you referring to a stretch of the game that lasted about 3-4 possessions? Kobe is a great defender. For a couple minutes. And that was an ALL-STAR GAME. The rest of the time he pretty much plays in a zone, doesn’t chase anyone around the floor, doesn’t fight through screens, doesn’t harass the ball handler, and we see highlights of his man getting layups because Kobe wasn’t watching him. He’s been doing this since they beat the Celtics in the Finals. In that series, he took Rondo–who had no jump shot–so he could float and basically play free safety. He still sometimes takes the assignment of guarding the other team’s best perimeter player, but last year that was out of necessity because Nash couldn’t stop anyone. And he usually only does it for a few possessions before he slacks off, gives up a back door layup, and scowls at a teammate for not picking up his man.

I love Kobe, but I’m just being honest in my assessment.

          • nlruizjr

since your being honest, elite PG defenders are far and few between, there are not that many defenders that can keep up with speed PG’s now a days and besides it’s not like speed PG are going full blast for 48 min. It’s more of a team defense concept now and that is where a good coach that knows how to coach team defense comes in and that leaves out MD !!!!!

          • Josh

Team defense starts with chemistry, and chemistry comes from playing together. The coach can’t help it if he can only dress 8-9 random players for any given game and doesn’t have enough players healthy enough to run 5-on-5 in practice.

          • nlruizjr

Josh, you left out the most important element, the coach must understand team defense concept and that leaves out MD !!!!

          • Josh

No, the most important element of team defense is the players trusting each other and communicating with each other. Defense really isn’t that complicated. That’s why Phil spent 30 minutes working on defense over the course of 11 years.

          • nlruizjr

Josh, josh, i reiterate, without the team knowing what the coach wants and how to play defense, their is no way for them to get into trusting each other, everything starts with the coach but in your eyes that doesn’t matter, fine you have your opinion and I have mine, have a good day.

          • Holly

Actually, no…I’m referring to the majority of the game. ALL STAR should cover the talent in the game I think. And in response to all of your expertise & criticism of THE Kobe Bryant, let me just ask you this…how many NBA Championship rings do you have? I mean, you seem to think you know so much. Or even better, they say that those who can’t do, teach…or coach. How many NBA teams have you coached & led to championships? Because obviously someone who knows as much as you think you do must have used it for something other than trolling…right??

          • Josh

I think you misunderstand me. I am a huge fan of the Lakers and Kobe Bryant. In my eyes, he is the second best Laker of all time and top 5 all time in the NBA. For most of his career he was an elite defender. No one cares about individual defensive intensity in an all-star game–except you and Kobe. But the numbers don’t lie. Since 2009-010, his defensive rating has steadily declined (104, 105, 106, 107, 111), and his steal rate and block rate have been at the lowest levels of his career during that time.

And to answer your question, I have won 16 championship rings both as a player and a coach. (What kind of ridiculous question is that?)

          • comrade24

Kobe is still a pretty good on ball defender, where he struggles and always has is his off ball defense.

          • Joseph Apohen

Kobe’s defense is two for you, four for me. Pretty much MDA’s defense. This is not to criticize Kobe as I like the man, but it has been true. He just outscores everybody usually so he basically gave up the conventional defense a few years back. I have no problem with that as long as we are winning.

          • comrade24

Dwight Howard was a shell of himself physically when he played for us. He also wasn’t competing hard on the defensive end because he was unhappy with his role in the offense. He’s even admitted that. He is just a whiner who will probably never reach his potential or win a championship IMO

        • Lakersforlife

That’s true. Butttt he don’t play BIGS for better inside D. Which I believe we were number 1 in points allowed in paint

        • Skip V.

Spitfire, your position here is impossible to defend. The Lakers need and deserve a strong coach who is a leader, who implements a working defense and offense that doesn’t injure his team’s players and who knows how to adjust and use his players properly. We can hire a quality coach and the team and fans deserve that.

        • michael

the rosters sucks, that’s true, but the coach sucks even more (!)

          • Josh

The coach has had a lot more success in the NBA than almost any player on the team. I don’t like D’Antoni, but seriously, that roster.

    • Ben Dover

its too easy to blame the coach…try getting those hacks to play some ball instead of blaming the coach…and get rid of the dead weight ( Kobe, Gasol and Nash)

      • comrade24

get rid of the face of the franchise two years before he retires? that’s a good long term plan and sends a great message to potential free agents. Take the Kobe contract which everyone loves to criticize. Kobe’s physical abilities are certainly not worth 24 mil a year. The Mamba may prove me wrong and i hope he does, but that signing sends a message to potential FA’s like Kevin Love. It says “We take care of our guys.” and the value of that message i don’t think can be overlooked.

    • Sandra Clark

I AM APPALED THAT THEY WOULD KEEP THE ASS AND LOSE THE CHANCE OF BRINGING BIG NAMES THAT DO NOT WANT HIM AS A COACH.

  • Danny E. Pagan

Smartest move is to keep him. You still paying millions to Mike Brown if you fire D’antoni you still have to pay him too! So the Lakers would be wasting million of dollars on 3 head coaches next year. Keep the guy and spend those millions on improving the roster. Is all about the roster not the head coach.

    • Lakestho

Are you crazy? Lakers aren’t paying Mike Brown nada cause of the Cleveland hiring and after signing a billion dollar contract with Time Warner, money should be the least of their focus. If they keep D’Antoni That would be their worst mistake and they’ve made a lot

      • Danny E. Pagan

You are right about Brown. Forgot Cleveland hired the guy lol Regardless D’antoni is owned 4 million next year. I rather him earn those 4 million. No coach is going to be successful in L.A. until the 2015-2016 when all the worthwhile FA become available anyway. Why bring a new coach this upcoming season? Why set him up to fail like that? Lakers roster aint going to get much better with the current FA crop. Next year is going to suck again, best thing they can do is keep D’antoni and hire the new high profile coach as soon as the season ends just like Phil is doing in NY right now. It’s all about 2015-2016. I’m baffled as to how people think that all that the Lakers have to do to win a championship right now is to fire the current coach and it will just instantly happen.

        • Lakerstho

My favorite part of basketball is when fans talk about the future of (insert teams name here). Not sure if you can tell the future or not but none of us know what the Lakers have up their sleeve. I would rather wait until the first game of the 2014/15 season to see how the Lakers roster would shape up and the potential

          • R3N3GVD3

its actually how the second half of the season looks due to the fact that that is when the team will be at its highest lakers won their first game this season where are we now???? Home. second half usually tells us because its when we’ll see how our “new team” would mesh and when the lakers have either made their moves or still making moves

          • Jim213

You mean just like the past year when the team said that they’d prove ESPN and the prognosticators wrong. Yet they’ve failed to correct the TO issue and to address defense for the entire season. Don’t hate the coach but things won’t change especially if he fails to adapt to his roster.

          • comrade24

I agree. I won’t be surprised if the Lakers have a coup like the Heat did a few years ago. Not saying it will happen, just saying that Mitch is savvy enough to shake things up and really surprise some people. For example, This is one scenario: Dan Gilbert said that any player that doesn’t sign an extension will be traded (not wanting to repeat the Lebron James debacle). Irving will be up for an extension in July. Kyrie turns down extension, Lakers trade their lottery pick for Kyrie Irving. Then, someone else mentioned this on here. After this, the Lakers resign Gasol, trade Gasol to Memphis, Memphis sends Zach Randolph to Minnesota, Minnesota sends Kevin Love to LA. Then the Lakers sign Luol Deng. All of a sudden our starters are Kyrie Irving, Kobe Bryant, Luol Deng, Kevin Love, and hell why not, Robert Sacre. Not saying this will happen, just an example of an endless amount of scenarios that could play out this summer

        • Holly

Earn it? I haven’t seen him do anything worth 4 million pennies much less dollars! He’s misused players, including Kobe, and caused unnecessary injuries ever since he got there. Give him the 4 mil to go away & never look back! The players hate him. The fans hate him. I definitely hate him. He needs to go

          • Josh

I don’t think there’s a single Lakers player that hates him–maybe Jordan Hill, who had the best season of his career this year. The perception is that bigs don’t like to play for him, but as Jordan Farmar points out…what’s so hard about playing in this offense? You just set a pick and roll to the basket for a layup.

          • Holly

You really don’t know anything about what you’re talking about do you? Gasol despises him & has made that VERY clear throughout J’Abroni’s entire time with the Lakers. The king of the Lakers himself, Kobe Bryant, has made it loud & clear that he doesn’t like him & has “no interest” in playing for him next season. I think the only player who does like him is Nash & he’s done so who cares? Of course it doesn’t matter what I or anyone else says. It’s obvious that you’re riding D’Antoni’s D & I don’t mean his defense cuz that’s something he’s never had.

          • Josh

I don’t like D’Antoni. Never have. Pau doesn’t like MDA’s offensive system but decided this year he could play in it and played well. He also said he would consider returning to the Lakers with or without MDA. Some “source” said Kobe has no interest in playing for MDA, but all Kobe has ever said publicly is that MDA is a genius and he loved playing for him on Team USA. Every non-center on the team has expressed admiration for MDA and said they loved playing for him. And as Jordan Farmar put it so nicely, why wouldn’t a big love playing for him, too. All you have to do is set a screen and roll to the basket for a layup.

      • comrade24

Not true. Him being hired by another team does alleviate the Lakers of a portion of his salary, not all of it.

    • Danny E. Pagan

People act like Phil Jackson is the one that played and won the championships. No Phil lost when he had crappy teams and won when the team was loaded. I don’t know how fans expect D’antoni to win championships with a bunch of castoffs, NBDL talent, and over the hill stars. Phil never won with a bad team like D’antoni has been expected to.

      • kookiebuger

That may be true but Phil also taught defense, adjusted to his players , and put together solid rotations. It’s also been questioned whether Phil made the players or if the players made Phil, you don’t win 11 on pure luck.

        • Spitfire

How can you put solid rotation of your players are injured?! You all have amnesia i think. The Lakers have a 10-9 record before Kobe went back and Nash. 2 of your best players not playing and you have that kind of record tells you something that he is not a bad coach.
Look at the Cavs roster?! The Knicks, even the Jazz who have a better roster than the Lakers, they have their superstar healthy and yet they played shit. Now you tell me if that is a bad coaching there?! SMDH

          • independentbynature

You’re a complete idiot.Antoni has no idea what a solid rotation is and neither do you.Get off Antoni’s lap !!!!

          • Josh

What do you think a solid rotation looks like? The best the Lakers could have done this season would have been something like (using only players available for at least 75% of games):

            C – Hill | Sacre
            PF – Johnson | Kelly
            SF – Young | Bazemore
            SG – Meeks | Brooks
            PG – Marshall

Sure is a stellar lineup there!

          • 3339

            C- Dwight Howard
            PF- Pau
            SF- Metta/Clark
            SG- Kobe/Meeks
            PG- Either Steve
4 of those players have been to the finals. pretty solid rotation yet all dantoni did last year was bitch about Dwight/Pau and pray for Nash to make him look good again, but nash was out so he ran Kobe into the ground.

          • Josh

Okay, same scenario for last season’s roster:

            C – Howard | Sacre
            PF – Jamison | Clark
            SF – World Peace
            SG – Meeks
            PG – Bryant

You need guys to dress for games if you’re going to do anything. When the team was finally mostly healthy, they finished the season 28-12.

          • Dave

STFU You are a Mike D’Asstoni fan boy.Go and slurp some more D’Asstoni punk.GTFO troll.

        • Josh

Phil didn’t teach defense. I think the quote is from Kobe that Phil maybe talked about defense for 30 minutes the whole time he was with the Lakers.

          • Duane

Again it’s back to the style of play a run and gun pace super fast style will always surrender more points than a Phil Jackson triangle offense slow pace.Mike D’Antoni is coming off a 27-55 season granted injuries kicked his ass in terms of hope of winning games but the truth is he is way under .500 in his last 6 years coaching in the NBA that’s not good at all and he has never won a championship in the NBA with his gimmick offense.Just saying.

          • Josh

You know how many active coaches have won championships in the NBA? Four. Gregg Popovich, Eric Spoelstra, Rick Carlisle, and Doc Rivers. That’s it. If that’s the measure of a good coach, the other 26 coaches in the NBA all suck. MDA’s ran a gimmick offense in Phoenix that revolutionized the NBA. What the Lakers are doing now is not the same as what Phoenix did, because they don’t have a PG to run it.

          • comrade24

they just don’t have the talent period to pull it off. IF D’Antoni leaves this summer, i believe it will be if they fail to acquire Kevin Love. Mike will be around as long as the Lakers feel they have a shot at Love. He’s Mike D’Antoni’s dream player.

        • Ronald Velez

Phil didn’t adjust to his players. He used the Triangle with all of his teams and there were players that struggled in it. Like Artest, Blake, Farmar at times, Matt Barnes. Phil also had early playoff exits until Pau was traded to LA. Even though Phil was a great coach, people forget that Kobe really put those young teams on his back where he had to drop 35 a game for them to be respectable.

      • independentbynature

No one expects Antoni to win a championship.EVER !!! Never has.Never will. That’s why he has to go.Never should’ve been hired in the first place.I don’t remember PJ losing 55 games in a season.Do you? When Jordan left to play baseball, the Bulls were not a talented team. They still made the playoffs.

        • Danny E. Pagan

c’mon man Lakers had one of the most injured rosters in NBA history this year. They needed a lot of things to go right for them in order to be successful and injuries just derailed the whole thing.

          • independentbynature

That does not excuse the way they played.Losing is one thing. Not competing,is another.I’ve been a Lakers fan since 1965 and this is the first time I’ve been embarrassed by their play. They play NO defense and that’s not going to change until Antoni is gone. You might of noticed, the D is missing.

          • Spitfire

They play no defense cos they dont have the talent to defend. Pau is your rim protector?!LMAO…you fools keep on saying that he is not teaching D. Have you watched the Backstage Lakers?! Players from their mouth that MDA teaches and prioritize defense first?! NO YOU DONT KNOW THAT?! wHY?! Cos you know nothing about your Lakers.
Another thing is, KuRt Rambis should take the blame then cos MDA hired him as the defensive coach. Fool! I bet you also didnt know that. LMAO

          • independentbynature

Have you ever heard of TEAM DEFENSE?You’re an imbecile.I’ve been watching basketball since before you were even born, junior.I’ve been to more games than you’ve seen on TV in your entire pathetic life.Go ahead and LYAO.Maybe it will clear your head up there. What a moron you are…..

          • comrade24

I agree with you about Rambis. He should be the first one fired. it was HIS job to come in and come up with defensive concepts that didn’t include waving a red cloth at the offensive player and it failed miserably.

          • jaii

That’s crap. The bobcats don’t have superstars. And yet made the playoffs with a new coach. The Suns played well almost made the playoffs with a new coach….. If you’re a coach then you adjust your style to the players you have which D’Antoni did not do with Howard and Gasol last year… with injuties this year he didn’t adjust to what he had available. … He Never gave a damn about Defense when clearly it was our defense that needed extra work…. i guess the Lakers will wait till 5 games into next season to fire D’Antoni like they did Mike Brown

          • Spitfire

Eh?! They are in the Eastern Conference where the competition is weak. They dont have much injuries, i bet you that if that team misses like 300+ games due to injuries?! They wont be in the playoffs or much worse than the Lakers record

          • comrade24

The Bobcats roster has a ton more talent than the Lakers roster did this year. Why do people always forget that once the Lakers got healthy last season they finished 28-12? D’Antoni adjusted the style of play to fit his roster and it worked. However, D’Antoni was hired (by Jerry, not Jim lets not forget) because he wanted to return to the showtime style of basketball. There’s no point of hiring a coach like D’Antoni if you also don’t bring in players that can play his style of ball. The real problem was the FO’s indecision between wanting a dominant big man to play through and then hiring a coach who’s known for run and gun offense. Either bring in Howard and leave Mike Brown or don’t and hire D’Antoni. The FO doing both was doomed before it began.

          • Spitfire

They dont know it?! They are just whining bitches who really knows nothing.

          • independentbynature

Anyone here knows more than you spitter.

          • Dave

Dude do you even watch basketball? You sound stupid and ignorant and gullible also naive.D’Asstoni is one of the biggest jokes in the history of the NBA.You are a Mike D’Asstoni fan boy and you are scared that you’re boy D’Asstoni might lose his job to a better coach so you are hating and trolling.GTFO.SMH!Sitfire you are a D’Asstoni fan boy with no facts to help you’re cause.SYFU D’Asstoni fan boy fan boy fan boy fan boy.Loser Loser Loser.Bitch!

        • Spitfire

Eh?! PJ has also said that only Jesus can coach this team?! Do you know that report?! Even Calipari has said that he will not coach this team, WHY?!
Who wants to coach this D-Leaguers and expect this roster to be a contender?! NO ONE. As for the Bulls, the core of the team was intact and the chemistry is there already and not much injuries like this Lakers team who missed a combined 300+ games. Then you expect them to win?!
How about the Cavs, Knicks, Jazz and even the Celtics who all have their superstar playing and yet their records are not far behind the Lakers sans Kobe. So your argument is moot.

          • independentbynature

It’s about getting the most out of what you have. That’s what good coaches do.You are incredibly obtuse. You haven’t got an argument to moot. You’re just on some kinda ego trip that has the rest of us laughing at you, fool.

          • Josh

I’d say a D-league team winning 27 games against NBA teams is getting the most out of what you have.

          • Phillip

Nah nah you’re wrong in fact far off base.Only 1 D-League call up and that was Kendall Marshall the rest were all well respected NBA veteran players like Pau Gasol,Nick Young,Chris Kaman,Jodie Meeks,Jordan Farmar,Jordan Hill.

Also Kobe,Dwight,Nash,Gasol,MWP,Jodie,Antawn,Meeks are no scrubs and they barely made the playoffs when most GM’s picked them to win the west and be finalist. So don’t give me that D-League crap please it’s just a built in excuse to a futile coach on a sinking ship.No need to worry these names prove you are a fucking fan boy and a liar Carmelo Anthony,Amare,Tyson,Shumpert,Felton and the mumbling idiot Mike D’Antoni couldn’t win with all them. You are reaching for straws and you’re straws are gone.

          • Josh

No one has ever won with any of those players in New York or before they got to NY. That loser roster just got Mike Woodson fired and a notice from Phil that any one of them could be gone next.

Marshall was a call-up. Meeks was a scrub a year ago. Farmar wasn’t even in the NBA. Hill never played significant minutes for any team before this season. No other team wanted half the players on the Lakers roster this season; that’s why they all agreed to one-year minimum contracts.

The 2012-13 team played really well down the stretch (28-12 to grab the 7th seed) once they got somewhat healthy and worked out most of their chemistry issues.

      • 3339

win with a bunch of castoffs? did you forget that he struggled to coach a team with Kobe, Pau, Dwight, etc?

    • Alex

The coach’s salary doesn’t count against the cap. They can spend as much as they want on coaches and it doesn’t affect their ability to pay players. This is a move by an ownership that doesn’t think the team can compete next year and doesn’t want to pay 3 coaches at once

      • Kmax

There not paying Brown no more . The minute he got a coaching job , that let the Lakers off the hook

        • Daryl Peek

They got relief but are still paying Brown. Mike B. being hired by the Cavs does not clear the Lakers from paying him.

          • Spitfire

Daryl they dont know it. They are all bunch whining pussies who knows nothing.

          • independentbynature

Get your head out of your ass, spitfire….

          • Spitfire

LMAO. You see?! That is all you can say?! Cos you dont have proofs to prove all your claims. What are your other Lakers sources aside from here?! Do you watch Lakers games regularly?! Read Lakers blogs like silverscreenandroll?! Or you only just read here?! This os your only source?! That is why you are all idiots! Read other Lakers blogs and sites and maybe you will learn then come back here if you are educated enough to Lakers.

          • independentbynature

You’re not even worth the time replying to.You can’t fix stupid and you are a serious mental malfunction.

          • independentbynature

SS&R sucks.SOCAL GAL is on Antoni’s lap.It must be crowded for both of you.I don’t need to read a damn blog.I’ve played basketball.I know how it’s supposed to be played and I can make my own analysis. You think you’re educated? That’s pathetic.

    • x man

If it’s not about the head coach, then move him to the right and make him the highest paid towel boy. Just use Rambis as a head coach for next season.

      • Danny E. Pagan

Rambis is the one that deserves to be fired the most, defense was absolutely terrible and he was the one in charge of defense.

        • x man

Then fire the whole coaching staff. I know shit roll down hill, who’s really to blame? Owner, GM or the coaches? A head coach should be well rounded not clueless on defense. Defense beat offense any day.

          • Spitfire

Get a healthy roster first. Cavs, Knicks coaches have a reputation of being a defensive minded coaches but look at them, not far behind our Lakers record without Kobe.
Mitch is preching patience to all of us. No one is too blame but David Stern and his basketball reasons. If the veto never happened, we all should be celebrating a championship, that hurt a lot for us fans, i hate losing but that veto killed our franchise. But we have to be patient and trust the management. The coach and the players and the management has nothing to do with all the injuries that we had. If only the veto never happened, we have CP3, Kobe, and yes maybe even Howard back here. I hate Stern the most and that is the only person i blame

          • Zimmeredge

Players and coach have their responsibility in injuries.

      • Spitfire

Rambis?! LMAO! You all know nothing about basketball arent you?! Rambis coached the Wolves before with Kevin Love in there and he benched Love running the triangle offense and oh yeah, for 2 seasons with the Wolves he averaged 16 wins or 16-66 for 2 seasons and you want that?! LMAO! You guys crack me up to the highest level.

        • independentbynature

You’re not cracked up,you’re on crack. What makes an imbecile like you think you know anything at all?Legend in your own mind? You’re an arrogant little imbecile.

          • Spitfire

Blah blah! Do you know what i replied?! Do you know Rambis records?! NO! Cos you are one of many whining bitches. Hahaha! Moron! Educate yourself!

          • independentbynature

            I know you’re a moron…….

        • Josh

That Wolves roster was mediocre and suffered almost as many injuries as the Lakers this year. Rambis can’t be judged based on his performance with any team run by David “I’ll take three point guards in the first round” Kahn.

    • Lakersforlife

Not about the type of roster he looking for when they’re getting scored on in the paint because he wants that small fast paced ball which is only going to
Take kobe to retirement even faster

  • derwin….

    Get rid of d’toni…already he can’t coach defence…kobe ,gasol,hill,etc..future free agents…nobody going to play for him….i hope its just a rumor..27-55…enuff said…

  • LakersHeatBeef

Nothing positive to say,so i will just say nothing at all.Jim Buss brotha seriously???

  • LegendInMyMind

Not a good decision for either D’Antoni or Lakers brass. Mike D is gonna completely flush his career down the can unless he gets out of LA.

    • Josh

The only chance he has to rejuvenate his career is by redeeming himself with the Lakers. If the Lakers fire him, he will never coach again.

      • comrade24

People have jumped on the Fire D’Antoni bandwagon just like they did when Mike Brown was coach. No one is PJ, and he’s not coming back. The sooner the fanbase realizes this, the better of they’ll be.

      • LegendInMyMind

If he left to take the Marshall job, that would be circumvented.

  • magikwyrkz

If he returns we are fucked and the Buss family are liars by stating that they are going to get us on the winning road again. All they fucking care about is saving fucking money when they have so much of it already. I will personally boycott if this rumor turns out to be true. They will not receive one cent of my hard earned money. I suggest others who
feel this way to do the same thing. My 2 cents. I am pissed!

    • Luis

Lakers are the worst run team in sports if they keep Dumbtoni.SMFH!

  • Ollie Holliewood

This is would be the worst move all time in NBA history if the Lakers keep D’Antoni.

  • x man

Question is, who the hell is this source?

  • brijohns

Are you Kidding me? Another year of this bullshit. How in the hell is Jeanie allowing this to happen?

    • magikwyrkz

She is condoning it if she lets it happen. As she so apply put it she is the president and Jim is the voice of bbq operations. But technically she has the final say so. So if she lets it happen she is no better than her lame duck brother.

      • Spitfire

        BBQ?! LMAO!
Yes Jeannie knows this. Do you even watch the interviews or even read ALL the Lakers report?! I dont think so, cos you all answer the same. Geez!

        • independentbynature

You are a joke….A bad joke.

  • Sylvia Ross

My heart skipped a beat. I am so hoping this is not true. dantoni, needs to go. Enough already. Please don’t let this rumor be true.

    • comrade24

what the hell does a coach being black or not have to do with anything? SMH

      • Sylvia Ross

That’s how I feel. You feel the way you want to feel and let’s call it a day!!

  • x man

If this is true, Kobe should sit out another year.

Which is worst, lose 3 mil on firing a coach that doesn’t fit with LAL or 24 mil on a star player sitting on the bench another season?

  • Pedro

We’ll the jazz just gained some new fans

  • purp& goldpride

Wow Lakers management…..I’m disgusted….F**k jim & jeanie for ruining this team.

    Screw you.d’antoni

  • alpar906

Only a 6’2 man who dropped out of USC to become a jockey would keep ‘Antoni as coach. Thanks Jim.

  • purp& goldpride

Lakers fans boycott…season ticket holders don’t support if the seriously.want to keep him….jeanie said she’s boss right? But you allow this horrible coach to keep his job . No FA will come here & kobe will probably stay on IR

  • peevs

    Fuck!
Knicks clean all their coaching staff while our messnin dantonincontinues

  • independentbynature

Another case of Jimmy refusing to admit his mistakes.Fire yourself while your at it,Jimmy……

    • J Taylor

Maybe he’s afraid of making 3 coaching fails in a row?
      - Brown
      - D’Antoni
      - Who’s next?
You’d think that the Buss family would stop him from wasting their money on bad coaching hiring.

      • independentbynature

He’s already made two.And the second was worse than the first.

        • comrade24

what are you talking about? Jim didn’t hire either of the last two coaches.

          • independentbynature

            He most certainly did….

          • comrade24

umm, no he didn’t. check a source. any source. Mike D’Antoni was Jerry Buss’ last act before he passed. Dr. Buss wanted a return to the Showtime days. There’s not a single source that will say different.

          • independentbynature

Not true.It was in the L.A. Times.I believe it was Plaschke who wrote that Kupchak had wanted Adelman but was over-ruled by Jimmy to hire Brown. As far as Antoni goes,no one was privy to why the Lakers chose Antoni and spurned P.J.,but everyone knows how Jimmy hates Phil.Dr. Buss and Kupchak just went along with Jimmy, who was in charge at the time.Dr. Buss had already given him control. And Showtime did not ignore defense to jack up 3s in 7 seconds or less. Why would anyone think Antoni would bring back Showtime?.

  • independentbynature

This news will make Clippers fans very happy.Another year of covering up our banners, hanging balloons on our statues and mouthing off like they own this city.I never thought the Lakers would have a worse owner than the Clippers.Who knew?

    • TheTruthKills

Well blame the Buss siblings. They conceded control of the city and the building with their poor decisions thus far. To the victors go the spoils. Until they get their act together the Clippers own the city. I never thought I’d see this dark day. Dr. Buss must be rolling in his grave (God bless his soul).

    • comrade24

That shit needs to stop guerrilla style! We should mob up on Clippers home games, pop the balloons, chant “Show the banners”, and generally boo the Clippers all the way back to San Diego. It would totally be worth the outrageous ticket prices

      • independentbynature

It won’t matter if the Lakers can’t kick their butts on the court.I’ve been to more than a few Clippers games. All their fans do is talk smack about the Lakers and their fans the whole game.At least that’s what the few of them that are over 14 do.

  • x man

The sad part is, from players to FO were all part of the WORST LAL team ever!

LAL is on a roll, can’t wait for next season 26-56. Let’s keep this coach and then make him GM.

  • Doc Shepherd

So this is how Jimmie plans on returning them to respectability?? OMFG!!! The idiot Baby Buss doesn’t have a clue if this is true!!

  • Kmax

Man the Chicago had a lot of injures , but they still made playoffs

    • Josh

Chicago had very few injuries beyond Derrick Rose. Their roster was pretty stable and consistent all season.

  • No Way in Hell

Lol this is going to set LakersNation on fire and it should. If this is true I believe they are intentionally running the franchise into the ground. They’ll trade the pick for a bag of coconuts and the new iPhone. Antoni back again, where’s my doctor, I’m going into shock

  • TheTruthKills

Everyone calm down. Nothing has been confirmed yet. But, it’s a good thing next years draft pick is top 5 protected if he is coming back. Because that’s exactly where we’re headed. I wonder how this will effect the Lakers brand. I mean if you were a superstar player would you put your faith in Jim Buss? If you’re a free agent would you trust Jim Buss? Why would anyone want to play for a poorly run and dysfunctional franchise?

I’m seriously debating dropping my season tickets for next season. The madness continues.

  • Kmax

We don’t have bad players , just bad coaching .

  • Kmax

Nobody will what to come play with the Lakers as long as he is here .

  • Joe b

No’Toni No’Toni!!!!!! We can’t take it anymore. Set us free Jeanie relieve Jim of his duties, idc who u put in charge, let Ray Charles run the organization, even he can see No’Toni didn’t fit with this team!!!!!!

  • quickster007

The Lakers is becoming what the Clippers was a few years back. The Buss Family should just sell the team. If you can’t recognize that coaching is one of the many problems. Just sell the team. Hey, Time Warner Cable you should be asking for your money back. After Jerry Buss died, it seems like his children are clueless in running the team. One mistake Jim Buss did, was firing all the Lakers scouts and hire his friends as scouts who are clueless. When one of the new scout went to Phoenix. The Suns decide that Steve Nash is washed up and they are going to release him. The new scout told Jim and they sign Steve Nash. Now, we are seeing the results in what the Phoenix Suns already knew, that Steve Nash is injury prone and needs to retire. Now, Jim Buss going to make Dantoni be the next year coach. The best years Dantoni as the head coach was, when he was in Phoenix and Steve Nash was his point guard. It will be a disaster next year if he remains the coach. He has a tendency to let his star players play a lot of minutes causing them to be susceptible to injury. I know I’m going to get killed for saying this. This is what’s going to happen with Kobe. The Lakers will be to blind that Kobe will be injury prone and the Lakers will still be playing him. What happen, four years will already pass by and the Lakers hasn’t made it to the finals. Jim Buss will be the culprit.

  • cyborgspider

Since when is the Charleston Daily Mail a hotbed of late-breaking news and information? No big deal people, wait until you hear an official announcement from the FO in a couple weeks.

    • independentbynature

Is that AFTER the deadline for season ticket renewals?

  • J Taylor

    Doubtful…
And when is quoting another news source reliable journalism? Sounds like a quota system gone awry.

The rating for the team are at an all time low. There is little support in the fanbase. Kobe has said he doesn’t want to play for D’antoni. Gasol won’t come back if D’antoni is here. Hill won’t come back.

The WORST move Jeanie and Jim could do this season is keep D’antoni. The media will eat it up and fuel it forever. The fanbase will mutiny and the locker room could follow.

  • independentbynature

Magic said it best.”I don’t believe in Jimmy Buss.”He’s known Jimmy for a long time.

  • Nizal

The reason we had all those injuries is because dantoni refuses to change his system to current players. That’s why Kobe got hurt, Nash continues to get hurt. I don’t blame Pau for getting “vertigo”!!!

Dantoni has got to go. This season was atrocious. The lakers can afford to pay him off it doesn’t count against the salary cap and we need a new coach to recruit free agents.

My concern is how come we fans can see this but jim buss cannot????? Can anyone tell me ????

  • jaii

Damn. Welp I definitely will not watch next season. I guess I’ll be one one of the person to cause ratings to drop again next season…

    • comrade24

      good riddance.

  • Rick Fox

This doesn’t state anything about the LAKERS FO making a decision! Don’t start going into a frenzy people! It just says that he isn’t taking the Marshall job, which means he remains the lakers coach from his end. It doesn’t say anything about that Mitch and the Buss family made a decision. CALM DOWN!

  • myJasper

Except for Pau the Lakers were strictly D-League. I think D’Antoni did a pretty good job with what little he had. I’m more worried about “Coach Kobe” next year than D’Antoni.

    • independentbynature

WOW….I’d sure hate to see what you think a bad coaching job looks like.

  • dlove

    lakers4life,i hope this is not true.danfoni,omg,we need some dame defense.simple-get rid of pau,no defense at all,can danphoni,hire george karl,build roster with kobe,hill,swaggy p,x henery,bazemore,get lou deoug,keep farmer,pick up gortat,keep kaman,let nash go too injury prong,keep meeks,etc,,,,,,,,,

  • Tyson

If D’Antoni stays, it’s shameful what the front office is doing with Kobe’s last years. Kobe deserves a GREAT NBA coach. D’Antoni is not that. When was the last time the Lakers won less than 30 games? How times this season alone did they set the franchise record for most points given up in regulation? (At least twice. 140+!!! Ridiculous.) How many opposing players had career bests against the team? Why should the coach of a team like that stay on? It’s been unfortunate that the team was plagued with injuries and that the talent they had to scrap together didn’t exactly fit the system, but you adapt. There was so little to no adaptation on either side of the ball. Some games the offense won’t be all there–shots will fall, sometimes they won’t–but defense should always be there. Kobe, where you at? Bring that death stare with you.

  • independentbynature

You Antoni lovers are hilarious. And everyone of you has his arrogant sense of denial, too.Get off his lap…..

  • KB24

FACT: IF MDA IS THE COACH NEXT SEASON—-KOBE WONT WIN HIS 6TH AND HE WILL GET ANOTHER ACHILLES INJURY OR TORN ACL—–LAKERS ARE EARNING BILLIONS AND WE SHOULD PREPARE A NEW COACH FOR A NEW CORE AND KEVIN LOVE,we cant just imitate the nets for declaring a win now season and build chemistry late with coaches and players or a newly signed FA,when LOVE comes here after the next season,it will be more easy to mesh up coz he is the ONLY NEWCOMER

    • TheTruthKills

Why would Love want to play here? Why should he trust Jim Buss, Jeanie Buss, and Mitch?

  • ExUM2Lakers

So sick of people blaming Dantoni for the lack of D. Yes, his system forms part of the problem particularly on the fast break area, but have you guys all forgotten that Kurt Rambis was HIRED to be the defence coach? The same Kurt Rambis that worked under Phil and helped win a championship..?

  • jzsn
