Lakers News: Wesley Johnson Open To Long-Term Extension With Lakers

Wesley JohnsonWith an eye towards the 2014 off-season, the Los Angeles Lakers put together a roster for this season filled with players on one-year deals. Players like Xavier Henry, Nick Young and Chris Kaman signed on in an attempt to show their value in order to set-up a big payday at the end of the season.

Another one of those players, Wesley Johnson, has arguably gotten the most out of his experience thus far in LA. As the former fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft, Johnson struggled in his time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and then with the Phoenix Suns, making him seem like a bust in the eyes of many.

However, a solid start to his 2013-14 season has Johnson thinking long-term with the Lakers according to Lang Greene of HoopsWorld.com:

This is definitely a place I want to be, Johnson said on his upcoming free agency. I love Los Angeles. I love the organization. I love the people that I’ve been around since I’ve been there. I definitely think this could be a long term thing. We just have to wait and see.

While head coach Mike D’Antoni has shuffled his lineup quite a bit to begin the season, Johnson has started 16 of the Lakers first 25 games. Metta World Peace’s departure opened up the small forward position in the starting lineup and his length and athleticism at the position has turned a lot of heads.

Johnson is averaging a modest 8.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, but there have been countless times in a game where the Lakers needed a basket and he made the right play.

Seeing Johnson re-sign wouldn’t be shocking as he and Kobe Bryant share the same agent and the Lakers haven’t had an athletic small forward since Trevor Ariza a few years ago. Labeled a “bust” for his poor performance earlier in his NBA career, the 26-year-old small forward might just find himself in Purple and Gold longer than many expected.

I like Wes a lot, hope he re-signs for real. I also want to see Henry, Farmer, Meeks and Blake back in a Lakers uniform.

I like all the players you mentioned plus Hill. Hopefully they will all be affordable as I think they will get better and mixed with a couple of elite players we could have a championship caliber team. Nick Young is already signed for two(2) (?)more years. He is exciting and energizes the bench. Blake might be part of a trade to bring in a top notch pg.

i hope it happens.. i like wesley a lot — heck of an athlete with tremendous upside. i would love to see him develop a mid range game and the ability to put the ball on the floor. oh, and he should shoot more!

  • jt3z

Hes probably the Lakers best defender as of now hope he resigns

  • Sina

definitely early re-sign! along with xavier henry, jordan farmar, nick young, and hopefully jordan hill…. hope thats not wishful thinking!

injury update: Kobe Bryant is injured and out for 6 weeks.

  • Al Haldie

Well here we go again—KOBES KNEE needs rehab —out for 6 weeks, so were back to fast ball and with out a PG—THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE EASY—BUT THEY WILL GIVE IT THEIR ALL, LIKE LAST TIME….GOOD LUCK TEAM LAKERS…

  • Mark Rigney

I like the idea of this move. There’s no need to do it now – let’s see how he does for the rest of the year… But so far I’m on board. Same with Xavier Henry.

It would be awesome if Johnson could develop into a better offensive player. He would be like Paul George (although not AS good as him) but Johnson has the defense down (most of it at least) if he learns better footwork for shooting and gets more consistent with the 3pt he will be one heck of a player for the Lakers

  • Marty Susman

They NEED Harrison barnes who has been benched in favor of Iggy. Harrison would LOVE to come here, the question is, how to get him…

  • Niknok Seyer

Wesley Johnson, Jordan Farmar, Xavier Henry, Nick Young and Jordan Hill should all get the contracts.

  • Richard

Out of this new group, I wonder who most likely will make the upcoming 2014 roster. With the injury its time for everyone to step it up.

  • Dorian Holden

I would love to bring back Wes and Jordan Hill. I don’t see Nick Young on a championship level team. He is just a chucker. And I think we need to see more of X, to make a decision.
