Lakers News: Team Uses Amnesty Clause on Metta World Peace

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

The Los Angeles Lakers have decided to use the amnesty clause on veteran small forward Metta World Peace according to Kevin Ding of the O.C. Register via Twitter:

World Peace chose to exercise his player option on the final year of his deal with the team. The veteran forward had been rumored to be the player the team would use the amnesty clause on along with Pau Gasol. Once World Peace had exercised the option, the writing was apparently on the wall with the team choosing to part ways with the one-time NBA champion rather than retaining him for the last year of his deal.

World Peace will hit the waiver wire and will become available to teams with cap space before being available to the highest bidder as an unrestricted free agent.

reallistically lakers still are contendars barring they surround kobe/nash/pau with talented scorers and defenders. peace had his chance to improve for 3 seasons and never did. i wish him the best. get some athletic wing players with range and can defend like stephen jackson.. if lakeshow is smart they are plenty of free agents that can fill next seasons roster! lets do it! ya!

    • Contender.com

They cant realistically get any good players because they wont sign any deals longer than 1 year.

    • Jim213

Sounds like you’re talking about P Gasol who hasn’t met expectations with regards to be the supposed second best player in the team.. Gasol has failed to earn his pay for the last few years…Better trade him for a younger player in a 3 team trade to try to attract another superstar in 2014 b/c the depth of Lakers is getting worse.

Both of you are insane. Having watched every Laker game since the championship years of 2009-2010 let me address both issues. First Metta World Peace. At his age he is still one of the most proficient lock down defenders in the league. Plus he can still score. There is no way that Stephen Jackson is even close to World Peace as a defender. Second, Pau Gasol has not lived up to expectations for two reasons. One, because he’s had to worry EVERY year that he’s going to be traded and that weighs on your mind when you know every year that the team is not sold on you, and second, the systems he’s been asked to play in are not his style. D’Antoni’s especially. Under Phil Jackson, he was remarkable during the championship years. Losing World Peace hurts. Keeping Pau is the smartest thing we can do. He is probably still one of the top twenty talented men in the NBA.

Mayt You are one of the few voices of reason here… most of these people are not true laker fans..maybe just because somebody may think You are cool because u say I’m a laker fan…I’m a Laker fan win or Lose since Jack Kent Cook days, when West & Baylor were playing.. You have to have certain types on the team whether they are sexy or not.. Even Cap’n Jack would not say he’s better defender than MWP I say #draftjeaniebuss

      • nanhalt88

he also punches people in the face. he also elbows people in the face. he also is a huge liability.

  • Lakerfreak

This is a rumor not news. And it should say “will” not “uses” since players can only be amnestied between July 10-16. Also saves $19 M not $30 M. Shouldn’t post news just cause someone tweeted it and should know the way things work. Just saying

    • Josh

The guy is a Laker beat writer for years now. True, it’s not official. But here’s guessing he has enough connections within the Lakers that he’s privy to many things the rest of us aren’t.

      • edward

30 mil because of luxury tax.

      • Lakerfreak

So is Eric Pincus and he is adamant that the lakers have not amnestied MWP

        • Josh

Because they officially can’t til Wed. But that doesn’t mean they haven’t made up their mind about it.

      • bojangles

All he did was post a tweet by Kevin Ding, which says “barring” meaning it still may not happen. Plus he doesn’t mention any other sources.

    • jay

30 mil with luxury tax math wiz.

  • Tim

Saves $30m because of the luxury tax not just based on his salary…

  • jay

I actually really loved this guys passion and his tenacious defense but…..30 million dollars saved….I really can’t argue.

  • famous3

It was time. Lets get something new now. Metta has been slippin for the past couple of years. He will be missed, but now we move fwd

  • Islesteelr

Smart move… We need to make moves that will keep us competitive next year, and still keep us in great position in 2014…… As well as 2015. We’ll be just fine LakerFam! Kobe will get #6 before Wonder Woman gets his first in Houston!

  • Frankg

So that will leave us with no SF on the roster. So who comes in now?

    • jeremy

i bet we resign ebanks and get one or 2 on the cheap or we could use kelly at the 3

      • Chris

are you serious, Kelley at the 3 is dumb. He can’t keep up with other SF. He is a damn rookie. If this is really happening, like FrankG said we have NO SF!. BAD MOVE

    • 2papaito

      I say Ariza!! Lol

  • Donald Johnson

We are not contendars you idiot!

    • Contender.com

      Yeah, but we are

  • Contender.com

Watch him go back to Houston

  • ANTHONYinCALI

    WTF is gonna play SF???

  • Besus

I’m really disappointed to read this. Metta sure came up big so man times for us. They should let him finish his contract. Jim Buss is such a drag.

  • lakerfanforlife

it looks like lakers are giving up on the 2013-2014 season and are gonna tank it ,using the amnesty clause on ron artest , getting rid of earl clark i see what there doing clearing up more cap space but still , its a huge gamble thinking lebron or melo will sign with the lakers next year and you are essentially giving up on a season to build for the future , it wont sit well with kobe , i have a feeling they also would love to have a poor record next year as well to get a chance to draft a andrew wiggins whilst also going for lebron james or melo , its a sad they as lakers fans as 1 mans ego and arrogance has ruined the lakers. Signing mike d’antoni was the decision that sealed the lakers fate had they gone with phil jackson , dwight howard said he would have stayed how much truth there is to that is unclear but its safe to say lakers would have been better off. The golden state warriors , memphis , san antonio , clippers , okc , houston are all better then the lakers right now there is no way we will win a championship next year or even be contending unless something is done but it looks like the white flag has already been raised , if i was in charge the first thing would be to have jeanie buss run the basketball operations and have phil jackson comeback in some form or capacity , we still have a talented nucleus in gasol , kobe and nash , surround them with as much talent as we can for the start of the season and then hope during the all star break some big names might make themselves available and have the lakers make a big move like when gasol first signed us.

  • KingSaso17

    Nooooooooooooo

  • Sti1lmatic

Damn, now they mos def need Lamar “Kardashian“ Odom…or least flabby Rob Kardashian

  • LAKERMAN

OMG YOU PPL ARE KILLING ME 1 META WAS THEIR FOR DEFENSE NOT OFFENSE 2 HE DID JUST THAT PLAYED DEFENSE AND PRETTY DAMN WELL MIGHT I ADD 3 ITS AMAZING HOW THE LAKERS ARE RIDDING THEMSELVES OF ALL THESE PLAYERS METTA JAMISON EARL CLARK LIKE REALLY HOW YOU SAYIN OUTSIDE SHOOTERS WHEN YOU LET JAMISON GO? NOT ONLY THAT YOU NEVER GAVE JAMISON A CHANCE TO BE THE STAR HE IS YOU LIMITED HIM SMH AT THIS RATE KOBE WILL NEVER SEE ANOTHER RING IN FACT HE MAY JUST RETIRE EARLY NOT TO MENTION THEY STILL LOOKIN TO DEAL GASOL WHY? ONLY GOD KNOWS SMH GET IT TOGETHER MITCH AND JIM YOU GUYS ARE FUCKIN UP

    • Robert J. Carmack

Yeah Lakerman, I can’t believe what I’m hearing either. #draftjeaniebuss otherwise, we are Doo-Doo

  • jhe

with MWP gone.. now they have a team that doesn’t know how to defend on a system that pays zero attention on defense…. and they’re expecting to get big name free agents to come to L.A. next year????!!!! come on! management!!! think!!!!

  • Vast

Tank the season sit Kobe for the year and hope for the worst record in the NBA to increase the odds of getting Wiggins in the Draft to start the next chapter of championships to come

  • Meester Meester

    People
might not agree with me but I think is great move, now they need to get
Odom, Nate Robinson and Gary Neal. Why? Because the Lakers right now
need people that are hungry to win and prove something, it is up to them
    to get another contract somewhere
else next year. Even Billups it will be great remember this is the
present and if they don’ make it in the playoff is a way to get high on
the lottery draft and guess what trade that pick or see what happens
next year. I’m glad that the Howard is gone bad karma and negative vibe
from him that got everybody injury last year. Lakers the Future is
bright just be patience. I will be very happy if during the season they
trade for Kevin Love. Let’s Go Lakers.

    • disqus_LXDPdQxXMw

      huh?

  • ra

Awwwwww too bad. MWP became a true Laker, and gave his heart to the organization and to the fans. He was also a ‘serious’ basketball player (and still is). My guess is that K McHale has him sign with the Rockets, and then guess what, they ‘will’ become a better team with great defense. Watch out for this one.

In the meantime, there is no one left on the team (besides Kobe & Pau) who can win (and, has been to a championship). Good Luck.

It’s gonna suck. First, Paula Deen screwed up and now this – the Buss’s.

Jeannie … do something. Kick your brother’s a**.

  • Kal

they should amnesty kobe because nobody would pick up his contract. and with savings they can hire entire roster again.

    • LAKERMAN

YOU GAVE BY FAR THE DUMBEST COMMENT EVER THEY LOSE KOBE THEY HAVE NOTHING AT ALL YOU DEFINETLY DONT KNO ANYTHING ABOUT BASKETBALL THE BEST PLAYER THE STAR WHO STILL PUTTIN UP BIG NUMBERS THE BEST FOURTH QUARTER AND CLUTCH PLAYER IN THE GAME YOUR DUMB KOBE GOES WHO GONA STEP IN KOBE NEARLY FORTY STILL THE BEST PLAYER AND YOU SAY GET RID OF HIM DO US ALL A FAVOR AND SHUT UP THIS IS FOR TRUE LAKER FANS ONLY WHY YOU HERE?

  • OneAdam12

This will be an interesting year no doubt!
