Because of this, Nash will be honored on May 18 by Sports Spectacular, receiving their Spirit Award, as reported by the LA Daily News’ Mark Medina:

Sports Spectacular will honor Nash for the Spirit Award on May 18th at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel, an award that highlights Nash’s various philanthropic efforts

No stranger to being honored for charity work, Nash received the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor in 2007.

Nash has opened a number of youth camps and fitness centers throughout Canada, and his BC Grants initiative has raised $800,000 for children in his home province of British Columbia.

Nash will be honored along with recently retired NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez, who will be receiving a lifetime achievement award, and UFC President Dana White, who will receive the visionary award.

    Congrats Steve Nash!

  • KingEmperor

Steve Nash I know you are a great player in the NBA but is time for you to relax and retire in the sport you love..

    • hookedonnews

He’s not going to retire. He’s got the next 40 years to relax. Great players like Nash shouldn’t have to hear fans constantly calling for their retirement. He deserves to go out on his own terms. There are no great PGs out there that the Lakers are looking to sign right now. He’ll be gone after next season. Enjoy it while you can because players like him don’t come along every day.

and then another injury will come for nash..

        • hookedonnews

Sure, it’s possible that he won’t be able to maintain his health. But then injuries happen all the time to younger players as well as older players like Nash. I’m sure he won’t play extended minutes (much like Wade, Parker, Duncan & Ginobli), but 20 minutes a game from a player like Nash is going to help the Lakers especially considering who they’ve got at the point. I hope he can stay healthy, but there are no guarantees. Same goes for Kobe.

          • KingEmperor

its time to have a new and younger point guards he is a 40 years old player he cannot guard younger PG not the same for koe because he is 35 years..

          • hookedonnews

Have you ever watched Kendall Marshall play defense? Being young doesn’t guarantee that you can defend. There are very few players who can defend the elite PGs one on one. Team defense is the key. The best PGs won’t be available until 2015/2016. Nash will be gone by then. Kobe’s defense hasn’t been great either, and no one knows how he’ll play when he returns. Yes, the team needs some good defensive players (and not only on the perimeter), but that probably won’t happen this off-season.

          • KingEmperor

who have a greater chance to have and injury 40 years old or 35 years old??

          • hookedonnews

Who missed more time this season–Steve Nash or Derrick Rose? Nash’s problems all stem from the nerve problems which came from the broken leg. He came back too early this season before he was really healthy. I don’t know if he can stay healthy for the majority of the time next season. That doesn’t mean he wants to retire now. He wants to play & he has a contract. There are no elite PGs available in free agency this year unless you want to call Kyle Lowry elite. The Lakers have expressed no interest in Lowry. That’s one reason that Nash doesn’t need to rush into retirement. They’ve got Marshall & Farmar. Judging by last season that’s not sufficient, and Nash can help both those guys become better players.

          • KingEmperor

We can get elite point guards in the draft like dante exum or marcus smart..so nash must rest his career in playing basketball..

          • hookedonnews

I don’t think anyone considers Marcus Smart “elite.” You don’t always know what you’re getting when you draft a young player. Kendall Marshall is the perfect example of a high draft pick that didn’t work out.

          • KingEmperor

Nash is an elite point guard i know that I respect him so much but all i can see is “he is done”

          • hookedonnews

He didn’t look “done” when he was playing on his 40th birthday or in any of those last games he played in. Besides, he is the one who’s going to make that call.

          • KingEmperor

Marcus Smart or Dante Exum will have a mentor and that is The Black Mamba..

          • hookedonnews

Kobe has never had a mentor mentality. Besides that, he’s not a PG and unless you want a shoot first PG he’s not the one you would want mentoring a young PG.

          • KingEmperor

I know rose had so many games that missed than nash but rose he is 25 years old compare to nash 40 years old..rose can recover 1yr or 2yrs from injury and he still young but if nash will get injury again we will wait 1yr or 2yrs for him to recover he is old enough so the lakers is wasting money on him..

          • hookedonnews

Nash will be gone after next season. The Lakers gave him a guaranteed contract. He’s going to get his money regardless of whether he plays or not unless he walks away. He’s not going to do that. With Rose, no one knows what’s going to happen with him. He hasn’t played in two years, and he could re-injure either knee when he comes back. Even though he’s young, knee problems have a tendency to be chronic. Hopefully that won’t happen with him, but I wouldn’t place any bets on him staying healthy.

          • KingEmperor

I appreciate nash determination to come and play again but his body and age is the problem here man..

          • KingEmperor

and dont compare steve nash and tony parker because nash is 40 years old while parker is 31 years old 9 years gap..at the age of nash he cannot recover his injury..

          • hookedonnews

I was comparing the number of minutes played and the fact that Pop rests Parker, Ginobli, and Duncan throughout the season. No one on that team played 30 minutes a game this season.

          • KingEmperor

even playing 20 minutes a game there is a greater chance that nash will get injury again and will not come back in the entire season..

          • hookedonnews

Yes, there’s a chance he’ll be injured. We’ve kind of strayed from the original point. It’s his decision, and he’s already made it clear that he wants to play. My point was that fans should honor that. He’s a class guy and deserves that much respect.

          • KingEmperor

nash will retire and marshall will not play on the lakers we need younger point guard that can play defense none of them can play D..

          • hookedonnews

Nash has said 100 times that he has no intention of retiring, and everything I’ve read indicates that Marshall will be back. As I said, the elite PGs won’t be available until 2015/2016. Maybe they will draft Exum, but who better to mentor a young PG than Steve Nash? Yes, they need a young PG who is a decent defender, but you can’t manufacture one out of thin air.
