Lakers News & Rumors Recap: Lakers Back In Playoff Picture

By | March 10, 2013|

Dwight HowardThe 2012-13 NBA season has been an absolute nightmare for the storied Los Angeles Lakers franchise. The team brought in superstars Dwight Howard and Steve Nash in the off-season to play alongside Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, but the combination of all this talent and experience simply didn’t produce results earlier on leading to the firing of head coach Mike Brown.

Once Mike D’Antoni was chosen as Brown’s successor over Phil Jackson, the team had officially headed into another direction. The move to hire D’Antoni instead of the 11-time NBA champion for a third stint has also backfired as the team has struggled ever since bringing in the former Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks coach.

Even though it has been a rough road up to this point in the season with D’Antoni, there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel with the team finally back in playoff contention in the Western Conference. After thrilling come-from-behind victories over the New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors, the Lakers may be back on track as they were able to get the best of the Chicago Bulls at the Staples Center on Sunday afternoon in order to move into the eighth spot in the Western conference playoff picture.

There’s still plenty of basketball yet to be played for Kobe and company, but the team appears to be headed in the right direction moving forward. It remains to be seen if the team can continue to play with renewed sense of purpose and a never-give-up mentality, but hope has returned to this team that seemed destined to miss the playoffs.

D’umbtoni needs to be fired. The team is producing results now only because they decided to scrap his stupid offense entirely and instead utilize the talents of the roster with P&Rs along with a set 8-man rotation (which will cost the team post-season with the fatigue factor).

D’Antoni’s offense has not been entirely scrapped. Take a look around the NBA. Most teams are playing some form of D’Antoni’s system. If you think Mike D’Antoni is dumb you don’t know anything about the NBA. The main reason the offense has had to be modified to the degree it has is because Kobe Bryant is not willing to change his game. He insists on dominating the ball and isolating which totally disrupts D’Antoni’s system in its purest form. He has finally started passing the ball rather than holding it which has made things work better. Howard has also begun to cooperate by setting screens and rolling to the basket instead of insisting on posting up. Before D’Antoni settled on an 8 man rotation fans were complaining about there being no set rotation. Jeff Van Gundy (a former NBA coach and analyst) said it was good that he had the 8-rotation set because players knew their roles and how many minutes they were going to play. As it is, the bench is not always dependable. I don’t know whether you think bringing in Duhon or Ebanks would improve that, but chemistry is important. Once Gasol is back, you’ll have an extra player in the rotation. D’Antoni is not going to be fired if you believe Mitch Kupchak, and if you’re aware of the financial situation. D’Antoni is still coaching this team whatever system they’re running, and they’re winning. It’s one thing to believe that Phil Jackson would have been a better choice. It’s another thing to insult someone who’s a respected coach and fully capable of being successful in LA.

I don’t think you can say that the decision to hire D’Antoni “back-fired.” You can’t blame him for everything that has happened with this team this year. Don’t forget they were 0-11 under Brown before he arrived. The only sense in which this decision back-fired was the flack they caught for not hiring Phil Jackson. Everyone assumes that he would have magically transformed the team, but that’s not really realistic. The injuries and egos would still have been the same, and the Triangle would not have been mastered any more quickly than the Princeton offense. I would really like to see the D’Antoni bashing come to an end.
