Lakers News: Pau Gasol Doesn’t Know Why Comments Offended D’Antoni

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

Pau Gasol and Mike D’Antoni have had their share of disagreements over the past two seasons. The latest rift between the two occured earlier this week.

After Tuesday’s loss to the Indiana Pacers, Gasol said the team lacked discipline, which would seem to be a shot at the coach. D’Antoni responded by calling Gasol’s comments “disturbing,” and also said they should stay in-house.

Gasol would talk to the Spanish newspaper, Marca, and explain that did not expect D’Antoni to take his comments personally:

I’m a happy guy who likes peace. I do not want problems with anybody. I do not know why they have offended Mike D’Antoni. You would have to ask him, but I did the fellow journalists. I know what I will say is typical when he says certain things that you feel that you have gone a little hand, but I think my sentences, minutes after a painful defeat in Indianapolis, have been taken out of context.

While Gasol may not have meant for his comments to offend D’Antoni, it’s easy to see how many would believe them to be a shot at the coach.

It is the coach’s job to instill discipline on a team, and not only did Gasol say the team lacked discipline, but that it still needed to be instilled.

Gasol would never be confused with a disgruntled, angry player bringing unwanted drama to the team, but he has become more open about his frustrations and voicing them to the public.

Frustrations are always going to be high after a blowout loss, and even though he never mentioned D’Antoni by name, it was obvious who he was talking about.

You can only call it like you see it , he has no control – not even his self….and everyone else – will agree with you …..

    • Chrmngblly

Nobody can tell who you are talking about, Al.

      • Daspin

I think Al is hinting D’Antoni wears Depends.

      • Al Haldie

May be if u saw the story open : Pau Gasol and Deantoni… may be that can help you…

        • Chrmngblly

True enough, but as a writer, it is too easy to fall into the pronoun trap and become unclear in these situations.

      • nlruizjr

why, he’s talking about himself of course !!!!!

  • hookedonnews

Can we stop stirring this pot? The lack of discipline was directed at the play of Bazemore & Brooks. What did he expect when they had barely gotten in the door? I thought his comments were ill-advised, but the press and the usual suspects tried to make them more than they were. Let’s move on and stop beating a dead horse.

    • nlruizjr

Don’t try to lay this on these young guns, you know as well as anyone that Gasol was referring to the dead beat coach and deservedly so, since Mitch and the FO has no b#### to comment on Dantoni.

      • hookedonnews

Why don’t you go back and look at the comments? He was talking about ball-movement. They were shooting every time they got the ball. I’m not saying there was no implied criticism of MDA although Gasol has said he wasn’t criticizing him. He wasn’t making those comments before those guys arrived. I know that everything including the national debt is Mike D’Antoni’s fault in your eyes and a lot of other fans who have on blinders and can’t see past the end of their noses.

        • 3339

Dude I really can’t understand why you are kissing dantonis ass 24/7.

          • hookedonnews

You know there’s something in between kissing someone’s ass and irrational hatred that can’t be objective when it comes to MDA. People like niruizjr see everything through the same prism (I hate MDA), and are incapable of rational thinking on the subject. The other side of that coin are people who believe we would be in the Finals if Phil was here. I try to look at the facts instead of being blinded by this kind of nonsense. You can’t make a comment that is the least bit sympathetic to D’Antoni without being accused of ass-kissing. I’m not the one with the problem. It’s people who can’t be objective who see any positive remark as a man-crush or worse. It’s frankly ridiculous, and 9 times out of 10 they don’t have a clue what they’re talking about when it comes to the facts under discussion.

          • 3339

rational thinking and facts? dude here’s a fact for you we are in last place in the west and are an absolute joke on the defensive end. We are a damn circus. dantoni has no idea what he was doing this year or last with Pau/Dwight. He’s always searching for answers. People are always making excuses for this guy and I am sick and tired of it. He has shown that he can’t handle this job. That is why people like myself don’t want him here anymore. So honesty quite your little game of blaming us for wanting him out for no reason. Fact is that we are an absolute laughing stock.

          • hookedonnews

You’re making my point. You have unreasonable expectations and blame MDA because they aren’t met. Look at the roster on the floor tonight. Now look at the rosters of the other top 9 teams in the West, and tell me how many games our guys are going to win playing against those guys. Our chances are better with Farmar back and the acquisitions of Bazemore & Brooks, but the additions of players into the rotation also disrupts existing chemistry. When you hear NBA people discussing the Lakers they’re not talking about it being a circus or that MDA is doing a horrible job because they look at it rationally instead of emotionally like you and other fans who have been screaming for D’Antoni to be fired from the get-go. They talk about the injuries and the lack of talent on the roster. I guarantee you that another coach would make very little difference in a situation like this one. Why did MDA’s Suns win 62 games in his first full season in Phoenix? He had good players, and they were healthy. He hasn’t forgotten how to coach, but you’ve got to have good players and a stable lineup to be successful. We don’t have that. If we did and we had this record I would be calling for him to be fired myself.

          • 3339

So being ticked that the Lakers are in last means I had unrealistic expectations? wow shoot me for thinking the Lakers should be higher than 15 in the west.
quit saying that I wanted him fired from the get go. farthest thing from the truth and for the last fucking time I wanted him fired when I saw just how ridiculous he was running things after a few months last year.
these injuries are hiding the truth, which is that he is not the coach for the Lakers. When they find that out I hope you’re man enough to admit that you’re wrong about this guy.
people forget that when dantoni first took over the suns, they absolutely sucked. Steve Nash made his coaching career.

          • hookedonnews

If you expected this team with all the injuries and this cast of characters to make the playoffs your expectations were unrealistic. They were expected to finish 12th in the West before all the injuries. You say Nash made MDA’s coaching career. That’s my point. You’ve got to have the players to compete, especially in the West. They are playing better with the addition of Bazemore & Brooks and the return of Farmar. It makes a difference who you’ve got on the floor.

          • roseducanna

To 3339 and Hookdonnews, both of you give this kiss for JIM BUSS. O…K…

          • hookedonnews

I don’t know about 3339, but I’m confused. Why don’t you just kiss him. I think I’ll pass.

          • roseducanna

Are you lame duck coach MDA s’ ass?

    • 3339

      stop it, just stop it.

      • hookedonnews

        You first.

        • 3339

          ??

          • hookedonnews

            You stop first.

  • Chrmngblly

It is not rocket surgery to know to put your hands up on defense, even though it surely is the coach’s job to make sure the players remember to do that.

    • ???

      Rocket…surgery?

      • Chrmngblly

        You’ll figure it out…:-)

    • hookedonnews

Seriously? These are not 8th graders. They’re professionals. I had to laugh at the idea that the coach has to tell them that. If they don’t know that by now they need to get a real job.

      • Chrmngblly

Right you are, hook. And some of these guys would be in the 8th grade if they had only stayed in school. I am not here to argue your point—just watch the game and look what they do. This is because of the culture MDA has created; defense and rebounding are not primary values.

In defense of poor MDA and this storm of injuries and new players he is forced to weather: too bad. Tell ‘em to put their hands up. :-)

        • hookedonnews

They’ll wave at them as they go by.

  • Marcus Grimes

Sometimes the truth hurts. Thats why Dumbtoni got his feelings hurt.

  • fakerstolakers

Pau, let it go. You are a two times Ring owner. MDA has nothing to show for..
    You are cool.

  • Michael

D’Antoni is an idiot, and a hypocrite. Maybe he should think back 14-15 months, when asked about Pau being unhappy getting limited minutes and coming off the bench. What did he say to the media? Something along the lines of “we pay him $17 million. That should keep him happy no matter what role he is asked to take”… Think those comments might have been better handled “in house”? I tried to be patient with coach D, but it’s at the point now where it’s pretty obvious a change will be needed heading into next season. George Karl anyone???

    • Marcus Grimes

Yea for real. Fck dantoni. This is the same guy who said that “post plays are the least effective plays in basketball” right after he got off the fckin plane when he was hired. The same guy when asked why he kept pau on the bench in 4th quarters said “i wanted to win the game”. The same guy who said that “pau was making excuses to not play hard” and “he doesnt have a problem when its time to get in line for the paystubs”. This fool has the nerve to say “keep it in house” when he himself runs his fcking mouth abou pau to the media. Fck outta here dantoni. I laughed when i heard that. Then immediately got angry because i was reminded of how miserable we as laker fans are right now. Summer cannot get here fast enough i tell you.

    • fakerstolakers

Karl has never won big. Byron Scott or try to steal, Rick Carlisle or even Spoeltra.
Karl had quite a few meltdown in Seattle and Denver. He is good, but, not the Lakers caliber.

      • nlruizjr

He’s at least 3 notches above Dantoni and he understands defense and offense, whereas Dantoni barely understands offense and that’s stretching it.

        • Kay Carter

their coaching style are similar but personally i still like to see Karl as our coach

          • Chrmngblly

            Jerry Sloan

  • LakersHeatBeef

FYI to all Lakers players the right way to play defense is with you’re feet sliding side to side and using you’re chest instead of you’re hands.

Using the feet and man up chest to chest but don’t use the hands it causes fouls therefore that’s bad defense since those fouls add to free throws that cost teams points.Play defense with passion and full effort and never give up on a play.

This all from a top defensive coach in the NBA on a current playoffs team.Lakers need to use their feet and chest to defend, only use the hands sometimes when blocking a shot or stripping the ball for a steal but never take stupid gambles on defense it results in players getting burned on defense by the opposition.Pau still on this drama.SMH!

  • LakersHeatBeef

That short assistant coach knows his stuff about defense.

    • Chrmngblly

So does Metta. Why don’t we see if he wants to come back and help coach defense?

  • e3bonz

It probably irked MDA because he knew it was true, but had not reigned in the offenders (B&B) do to it being their first game. I think they were trying to impress everyone to earn a rotation spot, but lost sight of the team play. Pau mentioned it right after a loss when emotions were high, but maybe shouldn’t of.

  • Chippaz

    1.Dante Exum
    2.Lance Stephenson
    3.Kobe Bryant
    4.Kevin Love
    5.Greg Monroe

    You heard it here first

    • Chrmngblly

I doubt it. Tell us how?

      • Chippaz

Monroe is a free agent and was on the trade block because him Smith and Drummond can’t play together.

Stephenson is a restricted free agent but only makes 900,000 and Pacers won’t be able to resign because of cap probably why they got Evan Turner.

Sign and trade Gasol 2nd and future 1st for Kevin Love.

And finally draft Dante Exum who said on numerous occasions that he wants to be a Lakers and might even be able to force it but that won’t be needed because well most likely have a top 3 pick. As long as we draft Exum or Embiid we’ll be alright.

        • Chrmngblly

          You are the Boss.

        • Marcus Grimes

I cant really believe that everyone is so high on Exum. No one has seen him play. I mean theres the youtube stuff but those are all highlights. We need to see an actual full game. He is more of an idea at this point. I like the idea of Monroe and Stephenson but theres no way that happens IF dumbtoni is coach. Get Lionel Hollins with Nate McMillan as a def coach and NOW we are talking. Pau may even want to stay if that happens. I loved how Hollins used Zbo and Marc Gasol down in memphis. ‘Chips are won with defense and bigs.

          • Chippaz

They should get Shaka Smart as long term coach. There is full Exum games on YouTube including the nike hoop summit against all the top freshman.

          • kobe24

Okay so Lakers got around $22~26 million in cap space.

Monroe and Stephenson are each going to command $8~10 million at least, how the heck are you planning on getting those two + Kevin Love($18~20 at max)???

Can’t believe people actually think this is possible

          • Chippaz

Go after Joel Embiid instead of Dante Exum, leave Kendall Marshall at starter, buyout Nash’s contract or him retiring (he has no choice) and that puts the cap space 28 million for free agents.

            1. Kendall Marshall
            2. Lance Stephenson
            3. Kobe Bryant
            4. Kevin Love
            5. Joel Embiid

        • Kay Carter

i think FO would go for Embiid before they take a point guard, since we lack depth in the C spot…..also dont 4get it’s rumored Kyrie wants to come here as well

          • kobe24

Embiid is projected as no.1 or no.2 and current position I think Lakers could get no.4 pick at best (unless some miracle happens and we land no.1 on the ping pong balls).

If Dante Exum lives up to his hype (young Kobe Bryant) and Kevin Love comes to LA its possible to see Exum + Love as a deadly one to punch (Like a Shaq + Kobe) + with the addition of a solid center to anchor the defense, Kyrie Irving might not necessarily be needed. (Although it would be amazing if he came)

          • Chippaz

No We’re currently at 4th worst in the NBA probably going to end up at 3rd.
The Last 8 years the #1 pick went to the 3rd worst again 3rd before that 8th before that 5th then 2nd, 9th, 5th, 6th. So basically what I’m saying is the worst record never gets the 1st pick, that’s why they do the lottery.

          • Chrmngblly

We should trade up for Embiid but I dunno what we have to trade with.

          • Kay Carter

we dont really have to trade up honestly, like Chippaz said the lottery is random nd the worst team neva gets 1st pick

          • Kay Carter

okay you have a point with the Kobe+Shaq comparison, with a pick and roll system that would be nice to see, but you have to think about it, Embiid could be that solid center with great potential, nd they maybe targeting to get a Kyrie+Love duo or may trade Exum to the cavs to get Irving bkuz Lakers never really use their picks really nd Irving is already NBA Ready compare to Exum

  • independantbynature

Because the truth hurts,Pau.Antoni is clueless.

  • Jay Brodes

its cool!!! i dont like dantoni either…worst coach in laker history!

    • fakerstolakers

Worst than Del Harris, I never imagined anyone ever beating that.

  • CJ

I wish this piece of shit mike dantoni had twitter so I could tweet “fuck you’s” to him all day.

  • Oscar

D’Antoni sucks like manager! He’s the worst lakers’ manager they ever had!

  • truth24

Too much fing drama!!!! Get rid of these cry babies!!!!! All these lame injuries. It was never like this before during showtime and shaq kobe era. These guys can’t stay healthy or fake @$$ injuries. These guys are weak sauce!!!!
This coaching staff is a joke!!!!! Mark madsen wet a fing joke rofl???? Jim buss is a moron give the team to jeanie SOB! I know!!!! We need more bench warmers cuz Lakers fans think theyre great!!!!!!

  • roseducanna

When KOBE comeback ,MDA can give his players shoot free like that? He is not system defend for LAKERS but he had defend for his paycheck.
