Lakers News: Nick Young Opts Out Of Contract With The Lakers

Heading into the NBA off-season, the Los Angeles Lakers face a lot of uncertainty with the majority of the players on the roster hitting the free agent market. Arguably one of the best players on the squad, Nick Young, has the option to become a free agent and it appears he will become one.

According to ESPN, Nick Young has opted out of his deal with the Lakers as expected:

With Young having a career year with the Lakers, it was a foregone conclusion that he’d opt-out of his deal rather than simply taking the $1.2 million he was set to be paid.

Fortunately, Young hasn’t ruled out a return to the Lakers and is willing to take a hometown discount to remain here. Young has enjoyed every minute of his time in Los Angeles and wants to re-sign with the team, but also wants to be paid well for his services.

Now that Young has shown that he’s still a force to be reckoned with offensively and more than willing to come off the bench, the veteran will likely receive numerous offers this summer.

Although many teams are likely to come calling, there’s a chance that Young re-signs with the team if the right offer from the team is made. It is unclear what the level of interest is in Young, but it’s safe to say he’ll receive an offer from the team.

Thats fine. We dont need players that cant play defense.

    • keenanjen

What are you talking about? We need players that can score off the bench. Also he opted out so he could sign for longer years. He want’s to play for the Lakers, smh yeah let’s not try and sign the guy who can dope 25 or 30 points at any given moment yeah your right lol

      • comrade24

also i do remember him taking a game winning charge on one game and playing pretty great defense on Lebron Christmas Day. Just because the guy is known as a gunner doesn’t mean he can’t play defense. He’s not a bad defender, and also don’t forget the coach we had last season thought defense was an actual fence somewhere.

        • Ryan Hubbard

Exactly. With a new coach installing an actual defensive program Nick will be better. We need to resign him. #stayswag

      • lovuntheshow

Nick young is entertaining but championship teams play defense. Either he commits to playing D or move on.

        • comrade24

Championship teams also have guys who can be a spark off the bench. Nick can be one of the best at that and it’s hard to find players who can score in bunches like him and are willing to take a role coming off the bench

    • Leonel CuffyoChick Pierre

are you stupid or retarded? Who else going to score off the bench like he does?. Don’t worry i’ll wait….

      • keenanjen

        I think he’s both lol

      • http://WWW.LakersNation.com Kïd Špłãšh

Isaiah Thomas(has expressed interest in Lakers), lance Stephenson, Jamal crawford, nate Robinson! But I still want Nick to resign, he actually WANTS to be a Lake&its not that often you find a player with his passion&attitude

        • Leonel CuffyoChick Pierre

those are some key players there, id take Nate over Isaiah even tho they are cousins lol , but I’ve never liked how IT plays, Lance is a head case but he does work.

          • Chrmngblly

            And he’s Swedish…right?

          • Leonel CuffyoChick Pierre

            wth r u talking about?

          • Chrmngblly

Just BS. I’d like to have Lance. Move Kobe to the three, maybe, so he would have a chance on defense.

      • laker mogul8888

Scoring is not everything you idiot. Why do you think the lakers were crap this year. Because they had the worst defense in the league. I’d rather sign meeks who is cheaper and can score almost as well(he averaged like 15 points this year and is improving his overall game).

        • Leonel CuffyoChick Pierre

Once again are you stupid or retarded? or did you not watch the games? We were crap due to Injury plague , stupid ass coaching, name a Coach that changes the starting line up every single game?, and name another team that had 5 players playing only… Robert Sacre had to stay on even tho he fouled out , but every other fouls would be free throws.. , also last time i checked you’re supposed to score more than the other team to win, so yeah scoring is pretty much everything lls and lastly i believe that the coach should also teach them how to defend also..

          • laker mogul888i

But Defense wins games. Not just scoring. And believe me, swaggy does not play defense.. I agree that he is a reliable scoring option off the bench but puts no effort on defense.

          • keenanjen

He puts no effort into defense? Did you watch the Christmas day game at all?

        • curtis paggett

r u a nut meeks is a hit or miss shooter not even close to swaggy p. get real

    • Tevin

What on earth are you talking about? If I recall correctly, they were calling him Swaggy-D for a reason. He put forth effort to play defense last year which is why he was one of the best 6th man players in the league.

      • laker mogul8888

Hah. Havent heard of that and im sure no one else has. Nice try loser.

    • Chrmngblly

How do we know? We don’t have any players that play defense, now…:-)

  • Kyle

    NExt years starting lineup:

    pg: michael carter williams

    SG: Kobe
    SF: Melo
    PF: LeBron
    C: Pau

    ….we can all dream, right?

    • Zimmeredge

No Pau. Role players only at the c. And we a shooting pg.

    • Ben

      nice dream, but more realistic:

      PG: Marcus Smart
      SG: Kobe
      SF: Lance Stephenson
      PF: Jordan Hill
      C: Greg Monroe

Still a great starting lineup that can score, defend, and play like a team.

      • Chrmngblly

We don’t need another gunner-ball-hog for a point guard that can’t shoot. Even Marshall shoots a better 3-ball at pro distance than Smart does at the college arc. Without a respectable 3, Smart’s defenders will just sag off him and pack the paint. He’s going to have a lot more trouble at this level. I am not sold. I would rather have Gordon.

        • VillainKing

that line-up is very great and Marcus Smart can improve his shooting..also he is the best PG the Lakers can have at 7 pick..Lakers will draft Marcus Smart..

          • Chrmngblly

Embiid. The Lakers are selecting Embiid. Gordon, if all else fails.

          • VillainKing

No its Marcus Smart..Chrmngay and accept it..:-)heheheh..

          • Chrmngblly

Smart is being projected at number 12, sorry.

          • VillainKing

that is a good news now the Lakers can really draft him at 7th pikc..heheheh

          • VillainKing

and that NBA mock draft Chrmngay are only projections..:-)..

          • Chrmngblly

God answers prayers, VanillaKling, maybe He will answer yours. We will know tomorrow if we get Embiid or Gordon.

          • VillainKing

We will know if the Lakers will get Marcus Smart tomorrow I hope that will happen..

          • Chrmngblly

I just hope you are not totally crushed by what the Lakers do. Why don’t you go over to your mom’s house for the draft so she can be there to comfort you afterwards?

          • VillainKing

It is ok for me if Smart will not be drafted by the Lakers but I hope it really happens that Marcus Smart will become a Lakers tomorrow and surely Smart will be drafted at 7th pick by the Lakers..you are right I go with a mom and that is your mom I will fuck her until she lost her breath Chrmngay..heheheh!!

          • Chrmngblly

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww, she has been dead for many years. I guess, if that’s how you “get” your women. She would be thrilled to know .

          • VillainKing

I will fuck her in the hell Chrmngay..heheheh..

          • Chrmngblly

…but you have such a tiny penis, VanillaKling…..

          • VillainKing

no I have an extra large penis that your mother got addicted..Chrmngay..

          • Chrmngblly

If you are going to dream, dream BIG….VanillaKling

          • VillainKing

No, that is not a dream that is true Chrmngay..heheheh

      • curtis paggett

Ben not a bad call that would work and drew for a low price.

      • A Fan

Or maybe Lebron finally snaps, goes “Fuck my haters, I’ll go to that one organization who wears that hate like a badge of honor and keeps winning titles despite all the hate.” and signs with the Lakers.

Then trade Nash and the 7th for Thaddeus Young and the 10th, and bring back some of the players from this past season’s roster. With the 10th pick, they’ll most likely end up with either Aaron Gordon or Julius Randle.

        G – Kobe/Farmar/Marshall
        G – Bazemore/Young or Meeks/Henry
        F – Lebron/Johnson
        F – Young/Gordon or Randle/Kelly
        C – Gasol/Hill/Sacre

There’s no permanent starter at the 2 and 4. It can depend on the situation. Oh, and hire Lionel Hollins as the HC.

        • A Fan

Before anyone says anything about cap space, LA can go over the limit to re-sign Pau and Hill. Marshall, Kelly, and Sacre are already on the team, while Bazemore is a RFA. It’ll only be between Meeks and Young because both will most likely see a high payday. I’m confident Henry and Johnson will be cheap.

      • VillainKing

        Agree..

    • comrade24

I guess we could start Sacre.. Time to take off your dancing shoes and put on your big boy pants young fella!

      • Chrmngblly

        Can Kelly play the 5? He’s 6-11, 250.#, I recall.

    • iEATcelticBabies

But could happen if chris paul and lebron talk,… they both want to be lakers…ith kobe, its another 3 peat…and history

    • curtis paggett

maybe not that far off as one would think. after all this is the lakers KOBE time to make it happen plz.

  • TrueLakersFan

So much for your stupid “stay f@g” billboard LakerNation. No way, does the Lakers ask anyone to stay by kissing people’s @$$es or putting up billboards. It’s not the Laker Way.

    • Leonel CuffyoChick Pierre

Its supposed to be from the fans dumbass ,

      • TrueLakersFan

Ok “dumbass,” I’ll take you more seriously once you get out your mom’s house and start getting a real job.

        • keenanjen

Dumbas* answer, what are you like 15 years old smh

        • Leonel CuffyoChick Pierre

Oh wow you know me so well lol What do you do exactly?, aww how cute you’re getting in your feelings.. Congrats.

  • Chris Park

Don’t see why people are getting pissed for him opting out. The guy is 29 he’s going to have to bank in some cash. He’s stated many times that hes hoping Lakers will offer him a multiparty contract (higher pay).

I’d take young for 3 years $14 mil, sounds reasonable to me

    • TrueLakersFan

Didn’t he tweet that he’ll play for LA for a “hometown discount?”

      • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

He probably thinks that IS a discount. He made $5.6 million in his last year with Philly.

        • LAK3R4LIF3

And he wasn’t really significant in Philly when he made that money in terms of popularity ’till he came to LA. If he resigns or not LA’s fine as long as they sign that dude Bazemore.

        • Chrmngblly

Did they invite him back? Why isn’t he still in Philly?

      • keenanjen

So he can’t opted out to get more years on hos contract?

        • TrueLakersFan

          Dude them “hos ain’t loyal”

          • keenanjen

What does that mean. Answer my question is it wrong for him to opt out of his contract in hopes to resign for longer years a little bit more money?

          • Leonel CuffyoChick Pierre

people are stupid dude lol, he even said he’ll take a hometown discount and some dumbasses are still complaining lol

          • keenanjen

I think some people just like to B*tch about things smh

          • Al Haldie

            Agree .

          • comrade24

I know man smh ever since Dwight left all these people are just doom and gloom and bitch and whine about EVERYTHING.

          • Devon Samuels²⁴

Its todays kind of fans they will bitch about everything lol

          • Chrmngblly

I will bitch until Jim Buss steps aside. That turd could have taken my advice and dumped Howard at the trade deadline and we could have gotten something for him. Teams were lined up for a chance at D12. Also, hiring MDA to coach Howard was pure incompetence. So there is reason to be blue in Lakerland.

          • comrade24

If Jimbo would have taken my advice Howard would have never came to L.A. ahh c’est la vie

          • Chrmngblly

            touché

          • comrade24

When Bynum was healthy honestly i thought he was the better center overall. Sure, Howard is a beast on defense but offensively i think he’s a liability. When he played for the Lakers i cringed everytime they passed him the ball. Sure, Bynums not near as athletic but he could block shots and inspired fear to drive the lane. You don’t believe me ask JJ Barea lol Plus we had to give up picks and i knew he didn’t really want to be a Laker. When a big man is not enamored with the history of Lakers centers, i say pass.

          • Chrmngblly

I agree totally. Bynum’s trouble is that he has different head problems than Howard. I wish he would come back to the Lakers and do what he’s told. He needs to got to Gasol’s doctor and get the same Adult Stem Cell treatment for his knees that Pau had.

            Jim Buss:

            http://thedailysportsheralddotblogspotdotcom/2014/03/jim-buss-timeline-and-decline-of-lakersdothtml

          • comrade24

i’d be fine with bringing bynum back on a minimum contract, see if he can work his way up to 12-15 minutes a game.

          • Chrmngblly

Bynum used to shirk on his medical procedures, so I wouldn’t even sign him to a players minimum contract just yet—or nothing guaranteed, anyway. He has no cartilage left in his knees.

          • keenanjen

People seem to have forgotten the 90′s we went through bad seasons. I guess most are to young to remember.

          • Chrmngblly

            It’s called Hysterical Amnesia.

          • laker mogul8888

Bro its not guaranteed that he will resign so quit being a smart ass.

          • keenanjen

Who’s being a smart ass? Lol you mean the people that are jumping all over this dude for opting out of his contract?

    • Al Haldie

      Three yrs 9 mil.. max..

      • Chris Park

I feel like he would ask for more. Perhaps 3 years $11 Mil? or 4 years $15 mil but I wouldn’t want him longer than 3 years tbh

    • comrade24

Exactly. he even said he’s willing to take a “hometown” discount. he just wants a multiyear deal. Keep Swaggy P. Kobe’s gotta rest sometime.

  • Jim213

Good luck to Young wherever he goes.

  • C*HarrisTHEboss

LATE – dude will probably sign with the Milwaukee Bucks – he doesnt have to play defense and can shoot the ball as many times as his heart desires – no contending squad is going to pay him out.

  • Derek Clark

Calm down and quit overreacting. All he wants is a little more money and maybe a multi-year deal. I believe he has earned both. He’s not going anywhere. He LOVES Los Angeles. He’ll get probably $5M.

  • Anthony Ridley

Yeah probably kicking himself in the ass now that the lakers will Go Get Lebron.

  • Aaron

Lakers: Do. Not. Overpay. for this guy.

    • keenanjen

      What’s over paying? just asking

      • LeCramps

as in fit the salary cap? idk.

        • keenanjen

I’ll go between 3-5 mill for 3 to 4 years. What about that?

          • Badazztj12

that’s a nice deal for him

  • lakers72

who wouldnt opt out with his current contract compared to what he could get? dj mbenga made have made more as a laker then nick young did so far lol

  • The_Sports_Dude

Swaggy P better hope he gets knocked up by Iggy Azalea and she puts a ring on his finger.

  • Marty Susman

Swaggy is great coming off the bench as far as scoring is concerned meaning he would be ideal to head up the bench scoring BUT weather we keep him of not depends on a lot. First off who else can we get, how much money will he want, how long a contract does he want & so on… I would love to see players like Monroe for the center, Stephenson as a multipoint/shooting guard & if Irving =truly wants to come to LA, all he has to do is stand up & tell the TV world by telling say, Steven A Smith…. The Number 7 pick for Irving would be a great trade, Gasol in a sign n trade to the Timberwolves for Love & s on…….Then players who should be looked at for trades are Love, Irving, Stephenson & Thompson and if they can, pay someone to take the Nash contract. (If Toronto is foolish enough, send Nash & Young their for Lowry) As for the coach, the Lakers have saved enough money & should decide on Scott, to Karl or Rollins BUT get off your ass and decide….

  • Edy

The guys a joke plain and simple we don’t need circus players On our team .swaggy p really lol

  • dre

The front office be doing people wrong that’s why nobody wants to play for Lakers…I understand it’s a business but Young is the best six man in the league, and they don’t wanna pay him for his service…All we need is alright team and good coaching staff…we don’t need 4 or 5 superstars on our team to win a ring…Nick young wants to win he wants to be here..why spend money on players who see L.A as there last option? If he takes this discount deal all my respect goes to him…

  • VillainKing

Nick Young will be a great player if the coach of the Lakers last season knows how to teach defense..

    • Chrmngblly

VanillaKling! I would like to see him snag a 2+1, team option, 3 year contract.

      • VillainKing

Ok Chrmngay but I don’t need your opinion!!heheheh..

        • Chrmngblly

          ….but I could be your father….:-)

          • VillainKing

Yeah, your father is my bitch!!:-)

          • Chrmngblly

Oh yeah? Well, YOU are my bitch….:-)

          • VillainKing

Your are my bitch Chrmngay and you really really like it :-) like mother like gay son and that is you Chrmngay,,,heheheh

          • Chrmngblly

The idea, so, is to say something new, witty or different than what I say. If you just copy me, it means you are not very bright, my little knob-gobbler…:-)

          • VillainKing

You are the one that being “DUMB’ here Chrmngay!!!heheheh you are just a little tiny knob-gobbler..:-)

          • Chrmngblly

…well, YOU are my bitch—and you like it, my little knob-gobbler…:-)

          • VillainKing

..well, YOU are the one that being my bicth—and you really really like it, my little knob-gobbler..:-)..like mother like gay son..FUCK YOU Chrmngay!!!

          • Chrmngblly

If I ever even showed you “Caesar,” your little tiny penis would fly back up your own ass hole so hard it would turn into a vagina—which it might as well be anyway.

          • VillainKing

hahah your the one that have a tiny penis and turn it into a vagina Chrmngay..hehehehh

          • Chrmngblly

Well, YOU are my bitch—and you like it, my little knob-gobbler…:-)

  • Rodney Holden

The Lakers need to resign Nick. He played for them at a lower rate & simply outplayed the contract. We do not honestly know what Kobe can bring in the future, but Swaggy is SHOWTIME. Since he’s giving the Lakers a discount, they should start @ 5 year/20 million dollar contract. Can see him in a line-up w/LeBron if he were to come here. Otherwise, he could sign with the Heat for that amount & LeBron would have a hired gun in his prime to return to :

  • Javon Newton

Lakers need to go over the salary these two years of kobes contract were is that timewarner money going . Then sign lowry melo LeBron kobe and pau back

  • DKWTTY

If Philly wants the 7th pick and Nash for MCW and Thaddeus Young they need to pull the trigger! Worry about other free agents after that.

  • ASC

    He wants the money
