Lakers News: Mitch Kupchak Talks Free Agency, Coaching And Julius Randle

The Los Angeles Lakers are coming off impressive results in the 2014 NBA Draft with the team bringing in Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson.

With the draft in the team’s rearview, the focus turns to free agency and hiring a new head coach. All the pressure will be on GM Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss to turn things around in Los Angeles with no guarantee that they’ll be able to do so over the course of the summer.

Kupchak made an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show on Monday morning to talk about all things Lakers. Kupchak addressed the vacant coaching position, upcoming free agency, results of the draft, and Kobe Bryant’s health.

Perhaps one of the most interesting things Kupchak said on Monday was that the team could have a new head coach in place in a week or two. Kupchak was asked about Byron Scott and gave the same answer he’s given over the past few weeks acknowledging the fact that he’s being seriously considered for the job.

Among other things mentioned, Kupchak talked about Kobe Bryant’s status, Julius Randle falling to the Lakers at No. 7 in the draft, and both Pau Gasol and Steve Nash’s immediate future.

Pau Gasol is very interested in joining the OKC Thunder.Would it be smart to help him end up with them via a Sign And Trade?Would a return of Kendrick Perkins big expiring contract and Reggie Jackson and Mitch McGary be enough to allow Pau to land in OKC?Thoughts on a serious reality as Pau is set to meet with the Thunder Free Agency starts at Midnight tonight.

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Why would we want a big expiring contract right now? We want as much cap room as possible to sign free agents THIS summer. The only way we take on a big contract like that is if we strike out this summer and have to push back the rebuild another year.

      • Kong

I am not saying i like Kendrick Perkins i don’t like him. What i do like is Reggie Jackson and his rookie deal and Mitch McGary a rookie that is a big man strong athletic Center. Also what i do like is we actually get some assets for Pau instead of losing him in free agency now i think we can possibly do better in a sign and trade for Pau maybe with another team. But if we don’t get LeBron or Carmelo or nobody relevant this is a trade worth taking IMO.

Think of it this way Perkins and Nash off the books next Summer creates $19 million dollars in open cap space and we are still competitive this season since Kobe is healthy and coming back and Julius Randle is hyped up as a rookie of the year candidate.

Also Reggie Jackson is no slouch his game is fun to watch and Kendrick is a space eater at Center and he brings toughness along with Julius Randle and we might even get Jeremy Lamb out of this deal IDK.I love Pau Gasol unlike some Lakers fans but it’s a mutual parting from the looks of it,but i want to gain assets.

        • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Under no circumstances would I want Perkins to ever put on a Lakers uniform. I agree with you on Jackson, but I don’t know anything about McGary. My opinion is that if Pau decides to go somewhere else, it creates more cap space for free agency this summer. This whole notion of needing to get something in return for a player leaving is overblown if you ask me. You don’t have to settle for the best trade you can find if you free up cap space to sign free agents. If we get “nothing” in return for Pau, we actually get an extra $8-10 million to bring in other players.

My hope is to resign Pau for closer to $6-7 million and let him mentor Julius Randle.

          • Kong

I agree Kendrick Perkins is not a guy Lakers Nation wants.

          • comrade24

Have people forgotten who Perk played for before the Thunder? Hell no he will NEVER wear a Lakers jersey!!!!

          • Chrmngblly

You are insane, Josh. The only thing of any value, practically, any franchise has is its players under contract. No franchise can afford to develop players and then just see them walk away. Even trade bait has value.

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

All I’m saying is that cap space has value, too. Would you rather have Kendrick Perkins’ terrible contract or have an extra $9 million to throw at free agents tomorrow? Give me the cash.

          • Chrmngblly

Of course, but what a lousy example. Would you rather have LBJ or the cash? Carmelo or the cash? Westbrook or the cash? Most of the guys you can mention are worth more to their teams than their salaries.

So are you, Josh. So are we all or they would fire us. Kobe is earning every nickel of his bloated salary when you consider the revenue him wearing Purple and Gold brings in. Good players are worth way more than their salaries.

Understand that one of the Lakers biggest troubles is that we have had no players to trade over on Love. And it is a bitch for Mitch. Players better be worth more than the cap they consume. See?

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Well, Charming, before you butted in, Perkins’ bloated contract was the example being discussed. So it’s not a lousy example; it’s what someone actually thought would be more valuable to the Lakers than cash.

          • Chrmngblly

Hard to believe, isn’t it? Some moron, Last year, thought that D12 walking and leaving for nothing was Jim Buss’ finest hour.

Meanwhile, Jimbo didn’t know whether to scratch his ass or wind his watch. The Lakers had zero, zilch, nada and we were out the players and draft picks it took to get Howard to come here. That was NOT a business decision. It was a colossal blunder of the first magnitude.

Perkins, in your example, is just overpaid or hurt. He could be traded. But he’s not worth nothing. It is like us with Nash.

    • Jim213

“Free Agency starts at Midnight tonight,”. How about July 1st, it’s not like he’ll meet with team’s as soon as the clock hits midnight. But agree if Pau would like to join another team and if a good piece can be acquired without breaking the bank to help down the road (trade) a sign an trade should be considered to help both sides.

      • Kong

Look i want Pau Gasol to stay on the Lakers but if he leaves can we please obtain some assets in return? If not thank you Pau for the hardwork and 2 championships adios amigo.

    • metalbass

never ever kendrick perkins no no no

  • Jason Smith

@Kong :disqus you must be an OKC Thunder fan??? Pau Gasol will stay in LA buddy, he’s not going anywhere… And that’s an horrible trade, Kendrick, Reggie Jackson and Mcgray.. WOW glad you aren’t a GM.

    • Kong

Calm down and hell no i am not a OKC fan.SMH it was just a question.

      • Jason Smith

ok kong my bad bro…. but don’t you think we can get better player for Pau??? I mean reggie is cool but the other two aren’t worth it

        • Kong

Yes no problem lol and yes sir we can get better players for Pau Gasol possibly as i would sure hope so.It is best to keep Pau Gasol but if The Lakers hand is forced then a Sign And Trade makes us better in the long term.Yeah i don’t like Kendrick Perkins much but we get Reggie Jackson and perhaps we can also ask for Jeremy Lamb in return.

        • Chrmngblly

Chandler Parsons or Lance Stephenson or Bledsoe or Lowrey, maybe?

    • Kong

Lets lose him for nothing then.I am all in with getting assets as we go along not giving away our players for nothing like we did with Coward.Reggie and Mitch are young assets that we can use or flip later on.

  • Kong

Just to be clear the Thunder are over the cap as they have $63,658,923 in guaranteed salaries for 2014-2015 and they surely need a sign and trade to get Pau Gasol even if they amnesty Kendrick Perkins they still need a Sign And Trade with the Lakers help.Pau Gasol is at least seeking $10-$12 million per.

  • Ryan LeBraun

I thought it was really interesting to hear Kupchak, himself, bring up the potential of using the stretch provision, as well as his uncertainty of Nash’s future with the team. This is smoke signaling Nash’s exit, which makes me happy.

    • Kong

Steve Nash has to go.The Lakers can do so much better.

  • RUDY T.

Always get something in return for a talented player such as Pau Gasol. We lost Dwight Howard for nothing when we should have did the sign and trade for Blake Griffin and Eric Bledsoe but Jimmy Buss was hesitant and it was later scratched.

  • courtney harris

I love Mitch’s interviews. He do honest & very well spoken. I actually want to listen to what he has to say.

  • LBJ

Mitch Kupchak needs to wave his purple and gold magic wand at midnight tonight.

  • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Great article. Not even one quote from the interview? I guess I’ll watch the stupid video…

  • http://www.sportsblog.com/profile/Wytols Wytols

There are 4 good guys from the previous season that Lakers can sign.
Jodie Meeks, Swaggy P,Jordan Hill and Kent Bazemore.

    P.S.Details on my blog

    • comrade24

Farmar had by FAR the best +/- on the team last season. It was pretty clear the Lakers were a much better team with him on the floor. Hope they bring him back to start if we can’t acquire Lowry or another pg

  • GOD Chri$$$

lebron can get the max in LA like he wants, if we can somehow get rid of nash we can probably pick up melo if he takes a paycut which he said he is willing to do.
And a trio of Lebron, Kobe, Melo > Lebron, wade, bosh, the heat are also starting from scratch like the heat so i don’t know why lakers wouldn’t be a real possibility. We have to build another team just like the heat do. And a trio of kobe, james, melo is a lot more attractive to other f/a’s than the trio of broke knee wade, lebron, and mediocre bosh. So in theory i believe the lakers would have a better chance of having other f/a’s take a paycut to win a championship also. But i do believe the heat have a better chance of getting lebron back too. I’m just saying don’t count the lakers out just yet

    • Zimmeredge

one but not two dude. ;)
bryant-bron-pau or bryant-melo-pau. lebron will take the max and melo won’t take a paycut too because he can make the max as well. it’s very hard to do as we have to assemble a roster around those guys.
lebron willing to have the max does not meant he will leave miami.

      • GOD Chri$$$

Lebron is kidding himself if he thinks he can stay in miami and still have the best chance to win, he’s said himself it’s all about winning. I just don’t know if he wants to live up to the that. The heat do not provide the best trio in the league anymore. If he wants to have the best shot at winning, it’s time to move on, and there’s multiple teams not just LA that provide a better shot to win, but LA is nice because you can have a say in the f/a and possibly coach

        • Zimmeredge

there is no team out there able to associate him and melo to max contract or sub max contract (80/4). both of them are willing to take the max or or sub max contract.
if he is taking the max and bosh and wade take major paycut then they can improve the role players.

  • rival almighty

Nash randle Marshall gasol sign and trade for love and lavine!!!! Any questions?

  • KB24
