Lakers News: Mitch Kupchak Talks About Upcoming Draft, Coaching Search

Since Mike D’Antoni resigned as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers 12 days ago, many coaches have expressed interest in the vacant position. While the Lakers have not reached out to any coaching candidates, they are expected to do phone interviews soon and have sit-down sessions by the end of the month, according to ESPN.

– Think You Know Everything About Kobe Bryant? Take The Ultimate Kobe Quiz! –

With the draft lottery on May 20, general manager Mitch Kupchak says the Lakers would like to know what pick they have before deciding what direction to go for their next coach, according to Lakers.com Mike Trudell:

“You do take into consideration the make up of your roster. Although I won’t rule out hiring a coach prior to the lottery on May 20, I think it’s likely that we don’t, because that’s really the first step in terms of additional information for this franchise. Let’s find out what kind of pick we have. That may even help us decide what direction to go with for our coach. It will be a consideration.”

While the Lakers finished this past season with the worst record since moving to Los Angeles, there are numerous well-qualified candidates available. Although Kobe Bryant hopes the team asks him for his opinion on this next coach, the organization also needs to take their draft pick into consideration.

Heading into the off-season, Kupchak and the Lakers face their most difficult one since the 2003-04 season where Phil Jackson retired, Shaquille O’Neal was traded, and Kobe Bryant nearly signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. While Bryant is making his way back to the basketball court after another season-ending injury, it will be interesting to see what direction the team takes this summer.

I don’t want to hear “conspiracy” if my Lakers win the draft lottery or have a chance to pick top 3. Every time the Lakers try to improve, other owners or players start complaining. We were horrible, and if we’re fortunate enough to cash out, then shut up.

This Lakers job will look more sexier than it already is if but only would we have a healthy Kobe, cap space, but also a top pick. A dream come true. We need done luck

I’ll throw a draft party for the first time if we end up top 5…ugh can’t get to excited

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Can’t get the 4th or 5th pick, so top 3 is the same thing as top 5 I guess

      • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Why do you say we can’t get the 4th or 5th?

        • Adrian

How the draft works is depending on your record is where you you’ll end up so therefore Lakers were 6th worst so they can’t be any higher however they give u a chance to win the lottery to get either 1st,2nd,or 3rd pick. The Lakers have a 6.6ish chance to get a top 3 while the worser teams has a better chance because they give them more tries at it because they sucked so bad.

          • Adrian

Also say Lakers get first pick and somebody goes 2nd then someone 3rd so then after the first 3 they go down by worst record or if a team bought the rights of pick it would go by the team they bought it from’s record.

          • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Ah, I forgot about that part. Thanks. (Also, I read we have a 21% chance at top 3)

        • jenksie

they only lottery the first three picks and then whatever teams are left pick in order of record

    • Jorge

Exactly homie if the Lakers win the lottery me and my homeboys are throwing a draft party for the first time ever.

  • vdogg

i am hoping for a top three pick, even if it’s at number three. has anyone heard the rumor that the sixers are now so enamored with dante exum that they might be willing to trade MCW on draft day?

    • Jake Centeno

I’ve heard it and shoot if we can’t get dante exum or the top 3 draft pick, we should try to trade the pick for MCW.

      • vdogg

screw MCW. dante exum is destined to be a laker this summer.

      • Dorian Holden

I agree with you in part Jake. I would trade that pick for a good young player like Kyrie, or allay Thompson or someone if they became available which is doubtful.

      • Dorian Holden

However I wouldn’t trade the pick for anyone coming up on free agency. We can sign those guys for nothing next year, we need talent but multiple talent. Meaning the young player won’t eat up the cap and you can still add a Love or a Rondo in 2015. But if you teed for one, then you trade your best asset in years for a player who is good but is gonna eat up all your cap space and you lose that good young player.

  • EmperorKing

    Keep the pick.!.

  • Richard

They should get a very skilled strong, smart, savvy, proven leader with great communication skills and knowledgable in all areas of the NBA game.

  • KB24

I am hoping for a top 3 pick be it wiggins, embiid or parker then if the lakers want exum or embiid trade our 2019 and 2021 first round pick for him. Though my prediction for the lottery is lakers,orlando,mil,phi,jazz,cel,sac,det,cle,phi(noh)—–wiggins,parker,embiid,exum,randle,vonleh,smart,g.harris,gordon/saric,stauskas/d.mcdermott

    • lakermatt84

Think I’d pick exum over embiid. Then in a few years Anthony Davis can come join the FUN!

What I hate about this time of year is that we ( fans ) are hungry for information. Lakersnation and other sources give us a headline that leads us to believe we might get some of that info we are so thirsty for, only to throw out pretty much nothing that we don’t already know, sometimes as little as one paragraph. This piece was written by the “Editor and Chief” of Lakersnation and it has merely a tiny taste of info, as it quotes Mitch, and the rest if just filler with more rehash of the same thing. GIVE US SOMETHING BETTER than this nothingness. Yeah, I know…. what else is there? THAT is another thing I hate about this time of year…… wait wait wait. argh.

  • ersliva

WE CAN ONLY HOPE THE LAKERS GET THE 1ST PICK SO THEY CAN DRAFT DANTE EXUM PERIOD….IF THEY CANT GET HIM I SAY TRADE SAID PICK AWAY BUT USE IT TO MOVE NASH THEN AS WELL SINCE HE WONT BE ANY USE UNLESS THEY DRAFT EXUM…AND ALSO ADD SACRES INTO SAID PICK ALONG WITH KELLYS RIGHTS JUST SO THEY CAN GET AT LEAST 2 GOOD STARTERS TO TEAM WITH KOBE….
BOSTON WOULD BE MY 1ST TEAM TO TALK TOO…SULLINGER AND RONDO FOR THOSE MENTIONED…
