Lakers News: Mitch Kupchak Hopes To Get An Impact Player With Draft Pick

The Lakers were obviously disappointed at the NBA Draft Lottery when the team fell one spot to seventh overall. But with a deep draft such as this one, the Lakers could still get a very good player at that spot.

– Think You’re The Biggest Lakers Fan? Take The Ultimate Fan Quiz! –

That is precisely what Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak is banking on. In an interview with Jaime Maggio on Time Warner Cable SportsNet, Kupchak spoke about hoping to bring in an impact player at that spot:

While the draft is always a crap shoot, recent history suggests the Lakers could get a very good player at that position. Guys like Stephen Curry, Luol Deng, Nene, and Greg Monroe were all drafted at that position in recent years.

The team will obviously be bringing in a number of players to work out individually over the next few weeks, but Kupchak knows that these workouts aren’t the only important thing in judging these potential draft picks:

Kupchak will undoubtedly do his due diligence on anyone the Lakers will consider selecting with their draft pick. And he didn’t rule out the possibility of trading the pick away. But fans can rest easy knowing that Kupchak has a plan to bring the Lakers back to prominence.

I heard the Cavs aren’t going to take Emiid #1 due to back concerns if he falls all the way to #7the Lakers should take him.

    • Kb24

Parker is their 1 almost all year long, wiggins will left them for raptors just like lbj to the heat

    • Nathan

For all the people and experts saying Marcus Smart is coming to the Lakers that is just great news i hope the experts are right once again.

The Lakers should draft Andrew Wiggins if he slips to #7.In recent years like in 2012 Harrison Barnes was projected to go #4 but he slipped to #7 or in 2013 Ben McLemore was ranked #1 on the ESPN big board and slipped all the way down to #7.It happens all the time top rated players slip in the draft.Hopefully either Andrew Wiggins or Joel Embiid slip down to the Lakers.Especially Embiid because teams might be scared off by his back injury. It’s going to be fun watching the Lakers get a impact player in the best draft ever.

    • Lakers Realist

You do realize there is no possible way that Andrew Wiggins is slipping down to spot number 7? Or Joel Embiid? Ben McLemore did not have nearly as much coverage as Wiggins/Embiid/Parker. Those are going to be the top 3 picks.

It’s time to stop daydreaming about those 3. It’s possible that Exum could fall to 7, still a long shot but infinitely more realistic than Wiggins dropping that far. The Lakers will get a solid pick still, we’re very lucky that this is a deep draft class.

What happens if Embiid’s agent steers him to a different team? What if they don’t provide teams like Utah and Milwaukee with his medical reports? What happens then? Do they still take him? I think if the Lakers really want a shot at Embiid they should trade with Utah to get the 5th pick. I would probably trade the #7 and our future first round draft pick 2 years from now to move up if Embiid is there at draft time. Would you?

Noah Voneleh or Randle…. we get kyrie next year if byron scott is coach… take that cavs!

  • Kb24

If we get a miracle, dont trade the pick if its embiid….parker, exum, wiggins are lock on top 5

Lakers Nation has become Marcus Smart central. All i ever hear the bloggers talk about is Marcus Smart in fact every news media talking draft mentions the Lakers and Marcus Smart together and most the main NBA mock drafts are picking Marcus Smart to the Lakers.Well i hope he is a great player….

  • Nathan

Draft will go like this count on it.

    1.Cavs Andrew Wiggins
    2.Bucks Jabari Parker
    3.76′ers Julius Randle
    4.Magic Dante Exum
    5.Jazz Joel Embiid
    6.Celtics Noah Vonleh
    7.Lakers Marcus Smart
    8.Kings Aaron Gordon

    • Lakers Realist

There’s no way that Randle is going before Embiid. Otherwise, not too far fetched very realistic predictions.

      • borsalino12

Besides Randle/Embiid, the Lakers will pic Aaron Gordon at 7 instead of M.Smart. It makes no sense at all to use our pic for Smart, when there is UFA like PG Kyle Lowry, who is one of the best Kobe’s budy.Using this draft pic on Smart will be big mistake. We can trade our pic to get some quality players in return and add Pau Gasol in that package via S&T.

My reasoning for the picks is based on many things with Cavs they want a money maker a franchise player and Andrew Wiggins can become that.Bucks have Larry Sanders at Center and they pay him big bucks so no need for Joel Embiid so they draft a big time scorer Jabari Parker.76′ers have Nerlens Noel coming back at 100% so they already have a young lottery pick center so no Joel Embiid here either they will pick Julius Randle to replace Thad Young. Then Thad Young will shift out to another team in a trade for a small forward.Magic need a Point Guard and Dante Exum is a no brainer he is the best foreign prospect the NBA has seen since Dirk Nowitzki.Jazz will select Joel Embiid they need a center to be the franchise player and he will start over Kanter.Honestly Kanter is not that good and he should be traded,Kanter moves slow and he has no serious offensive moves.Boston Celtics will draft Noah Vonleh at number 6 because he fits their team and their needs. Also Noah Vonleh is from the Boston area and he is a fan favorite already.Vonleh makes way more sense for Boston than Marcus Smart since they already have All Star Point Guard Rajon Rondo and Avery Bradley also Bayless and Phil Pressey they need a big man stretch Power Forward to replace Kevin Garnett they have Jeff Green at Small Forward and limited Jared Sullinger at Power Forward that’s why Noah Vonleh is a must.

We the Lakers need a Point Guard in the worst way possible as we lost games now for the last 4 years due to bad Point Guard play. Also Steve Nash is 40 years old in his final year of his contract and he will be gone by next year guaranteed. Also Kendall Marshall just is not fast enough or a good enough shooter to stick as a starter.

That means we need to draft Marcus Smart a tough Point Guard that is the best defensive player in this draft. Also Marcus Smart plays offense just like 3 time champion Dwayne Wade. All his draft combine numbers were excellent and he tested out faster than Chris Paul,Russell Westbrook,John Wall,Stephen Curry yeah that’s very impressive by Smart.Yes Smart is a great athlete and dunker.

Imo: Resign Nick, Xavier, Kent, Farmar, Hill, Gasol, Kelly, &Kaman. Sign Rudy Gay, Josh McRoberts, Isaiah Thomas. Draft Marcus Smart. We Have Kobe, Nash&Sacre
