Lakers News: Kobe’s Extension Among Grantland’s Worst Contracts In NBA

Every season, Bill Simmons of ESPN writes his annual “Worst NBA Contracts” for his website Grantland. This year, Bill decided to list his “Top 30 Worst NBA Contracts” and one Laker found himself on the list. Fresh off a two year, $48 million extension, Kobe Bryant was listed as the sixth worst contract in the league.

According to Bill Simmons, he doesn’t think the Lakers should pay Bryant that significant amount of money if they want to win another championship:

“You can’t pay Kobe $78.95 million through 2016 if you’re trying to win the title. But maybe that’s the point. Maybe the Lakers didn’t care about winning a title.”

While Kobe has only appeared in six games this season, he has helped the franchise to seven Finals appearances and has delivered five NBA Championships. The idea that the Lakers are not trying to win titles is sure to anger some fans. This is still a franchise who has only missed the playoffs three times since moving to Los Angeles and has won at least 30 games every season.

In the middle of a disappointing season, Simmons believes it’s a stopgap move and the Lakers are looking toward the future:

“So with that ridiculously unnecessary Kobe extension, they bought two extra years of … um … relevance? It’s a stopgap move, that’s it. They’re already thinking about 2015 (Kevin Love), 2016 (Durant) and 2017 (Westbrook).”

The Lakers have already been mentioned in rumors connecting them to Kevin Love and have long wanted to add a superstar to play alongside Kobe and then take over once Bryant retired. The Lakers thought they had their future superstar in Dwight Howard, but things went wayward.

While Kobe’s new contract does cut into the team’s salary cap, there is still room for management to offer a max contract to a player like Carmelo Anthony this summer or Kevin Love next summer. While Kobe may never be the player he once was, he is still capable of being an elite scorer and the amount of jersey sales and media attention he brings to the storied Lakers franchise is too much for the team to let go. The Lakers have continued to put faith into Bryant and hope he can deliver another championship in his final two seasons.

ah, bill simmons. a nice, neutral, unbiased and well-informed basketball voice, particularly as far as the purple and gold is concerned. i can’t think of anyone having more appropriate initials than this guy.

    • SamuelLJacksonjr

Sir you are truly a master of sarcasm. And I commend u for it. bill simmons is the definition of a douche.

      • ra

Kobe = brand (Lakers brand). Kobe = $, still. Kobe was voted into All-Stars, even while injured.

The Lakers FO knows this. Even having him around = $$. They are ‘still’ receiving more bang for the buck w/Kobe, even without Kobe playing now.

  • LakersHeatBeef

Is the contract Kobe signed insured?

  • Leo

Simmons is an idiot. He has made the ESPN or ABC studio show unwatchable.

  • Showmethe

Lakers signed this contract is doomed bad team

  • TheTruthKills

Simmons is right on the money with this. $48.5 million for two more years of the broken down Mamba. The team should have waited until the summer and tested the market. I think players would be lined up to play here if it wasn’t for Kobe and that contract.

    • ColeWorldNoBlanket

Go shove your tongue back in your dads asshole troll.

    • Devon Murray

Dumbass, test the Free market??? what free market? what the hell are you smoking??? What players please enlighten us on what players that are not restricted was lining up? I bet you wont come back with worthy names…

  • gm jack

It is not Simmons Money. Lakers gave him that contract to Say Thanks and to make a splash.

But the Lakers Could have signed him for 5 years @ $50 (Same amount of thank you money) and then offer Kobe to retire as a player to move to FO or as an assistant coach.

Kobe will be Lakers Coach one day.

    • gm jack

With Mith and MDA you can try to rebuit all you want.

It is like asking a bicycle compnay to built Mercedes Benz

  • C*HarrisTHEboss

Kobe is a greedy SOB -

    • Devon Murray

Kobe didn’t ask for that contract…

      • C*HarrisTHEboss

“I’m not taking any at all – that’s the negotiation that you have to have.” Kobe Bryant told Lakers Nation in an exclusive interview at his Kobe Basketball Academy on Wednesday. “For me to sit here and say, ‘Oh yeah, I’m just going to take a huge pay cut. Nah, I’m going to try to get as much as I possibly can.”

        • Devon Murray

No moron… though Kobe said that back in July 2013. Mitch and Jim WENT to Kobe with the deal… Kobe said there wasn’t even a negotiation to be had…genius…

          • C*HarrisTHEboss

Enough with the namecalling – you sound like a whiny ass 10 year old. Do you have any real inside knowledge of what was said between the two? Do you work for the Lakers front office? You’re just some dumbass kid who reads shit and the media and thinks his opinion carries weight. If you had an ounce of grey matter you would know 99% of whats reported in MSM is complete PR falsities. But go ahead and keep ranting your bullshit like you have a clue.

          • Devon Murray

Apologies for the name calling, just a bit passionate… do I have any knowledge, the answer would be NO, yet when Kobe said himself there wasn’t any negotiation i’m incline to believe him and Mitch who said on TWSports the same thing. .I’ll leave you with this…

On the heels of signing his new pact, Kobe faced storms of criticism. Nearly $50 million? For an aging, currently injured volume shooter? How selfish. He should’ve signed for less, given the Lakers a steep discount, enabling them to sign LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony this summer. What gives him the right to demand that much coin?

Turns out he didn’t demand anything.

“This was easy,” Kobe told Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski. “This wasn’t a negotiation. The Lakers made their offer with cap and building a great team in mind while still taking care of me as a player.”

In fairness to Kobe, he has a point.

If an NBA team came at me with $48.5 million over two years, I’m not going to ask for less. The Association is a business. Players are programmed to capitalize off their monetary value, no matter how old they are. In most cases, they scrap and claw for every penny possible.

But this wasn’t a dogfight for Kobe; this was not a contentious negotiation process. It wasn’t even a process.

The Lakers apparently came at Kobe with a number, and he accepted that number. If you’re going to be mad at someone, look at the Lakers. Blame them for padding Kobe’s bank accounts with too much green salad.

            Then consider thanking them.

          • Paytc

I agree with you about Kobe getting his just due. This is a business and owners piss and shit on players every chance they can. Not to mention Kobe is that rare exception. Kobe is not just a baller, Kobe is a brand. This is a business and only a fool would not lock down the brand that’s been keeping the franchi$e thriving.

A player must get his while he can, because once his stock slides so does his salary. I also agree if there is anyone to blame(which I personally don’t think so) it’s the Laker’s for making an offer Kobe couldn’t refuse.

Now if only the Lakers can stay healthy. We must take into account the Lakers have had a complete makeover from last season’s starters. No MWP,no D12,No Nash,No Kobe, and no Gasol off and on. What team would thrive if they had to scrape together a starting 5 at the beginning of the season and watch the scraps change every two weeks? There will be some more changes and hopefully better health.

Cheers to Kobe’s successful return to the top and more Laker championships in the process.

          • Devon Murray

Figured you would have nothing to say…

          • C*HarrisTHEboss

Or i just lost interest – but whatever floats your boat

          • Devon Murray

Exactly, people of your ilk usually do- you’re so entertaining.. have a good one..

          • C*HarrisTHEboss

And people of yours have nothing better to do – somewhat pathologically needing attention and having some inferiority complex causing you to tell people to “kill themselves” on an internet forum board – there are obviously some deep seeded issues going on here

          • Devon Murray

I sincerely apologized, it was your choice to accept it or not. But, I digress… I will always take the time out to call people on their BS statements such as the one you made. I corrected you… plain and simple. I wont even dignify your other statements, I choose not to banter back and fourth with fools (hopefully you know the rest of that “saying”), so with that said… don’t respond to me and my opinions and I’ll extend the courtesy…again, have a good one.

          • C*HarrisTHEboss

haha – your just a giant self-righteous hypocrite

          • Devon Murray

And I knew you couldn’t help yourself and not just let this go and get back to being Laker fans with differing points of view; to your statement; now you’re just becoming pathetic. AGAIN, have a good day…

          • C*HarrisTHEboss

Says he chooses note to banter back and forth – yet responds every time

          • Devon Murray

            Racist much, William… *sighs*

          • Devon Murray

Racist much….. *sighs* to be a faithful servant of The Most High God… you should be more careful not to wake a sleeping Elephant…

          • C*HarrisTHEboss

Hes an internet warrior – grrr – i live in east oakland and employ many people of color looking for second chances – save the liberal racist act

  • Jarred

There should’ve been no rush in FO’s part to extend him and give him that huge an extension. I get to some degree that it’s a “thank you for everything” deal, but that kind of attachment and nostalgia just punted the actual rebuilding further down the road.

    • Devon Murray

That makes no sense, Kobe took a pay cut, he is grandfathered so he could have gotten more, this contract still also the Lakers to get a top FA, people forget Kobe was going to be a unrestricted FA, sooo hmmm, who would have been the top 3 FA.. LBJ, MELO and Kobe…

  • Jerome

He got offered 48 million for 2 years I mean really? Who wouldn’t take that… Everybody say he done and all but we haven’t seen him play don’t count him out yet…but if he come out scoring 28 ppg same people count him out will be back on this bandwagon…. We fans count him out but NBA players and peopledon’t

  • Swaggy Rambo

Bill Simmons is a known Lakers/Kobe hater. Why would you publish his biased opinion on Lakers Nation?

  • Lakersfanfromwayback

you don’t seem to understand is that Kobe sells tickets! Go anywhere the Lakers
play and the majority of the people who are not really fans come to see Kobe
play. Most come just so they can say they saw the great Kobe Bean Bryant play
in an NBA game. I know I have driven 300 miles just to see the Lakers play; not
necessarily just Kobe, but the Lakers. So as a business investment, Kobe is
worth the money to the Lakers even if he may never be the same. Ticket and jersey
sells alone make him worth the money they are giving him…not many players
around who can make an organization millions of dollars off of their name and

    • TheTruthKills

Wow. So he can sell tickets, jerseys, commemorative cups, and a bunch of other crap. Can he still be an elite player in this game? No. Can he lead a team to a championship anymore? No. Is he worth putting off the future? No. Off the court it was a good move, but on the court it was idiotic. Lakers fans will show up as long as the team is winning. Regardless of who’s on the team. Kobe cannot be bigger than the team.

      • Devon Murray

This is absolutely THE dumbest post I’ve ever read on Lakers Nation… I will break down your stupid post line for line: Can he still be a elite player in this game? Kobe, LAST YEAR avg 27/5/6 Can he lead a team to a championship anymore? Yes, Kobe
+/- is still in the top 10 in the NBA and with the certain moves he can lead the team back and concerting Kevin Durant hasn’t lets you know it’s always about a team around you. If you were remotely smart, and youre not) you’ve could have easily googled Kobe contract and read for yourself, yet you choose to listen to the idiot Bill Simmons, long life Boston Celtic Fan. Kobe isn’t and hasn’t never been bigger than the team, he’s box office period.. numbers don’t lie, but apparently, Stans like you do…

        • Guru

Quite berating people and get your annoying ass out of here – fuckin troll

          • Devon Murray

You can be as sensitive as you like, the truth is the truth…

          • Guru

Berating is different from stating the obvious

          • Devon Murray

My apologies, for the berating and name calling…

        • TheTruthKills

Wow…..Why are you so mad? You want me to kill myself because I don’t agree with you? Every “counter point” you tried to make is irrelevant. Your living in the past. “Last year this, three years ago that, kill yourself blah blah blah” I’ve had more intelligent conversations with 2 year olds. While you live in the past I’ll be fine here in the present. Kobe is old and injury prone. He’s not worth $48.5 million for two years. Now stop replying like a moron and I’ll stop making you feel like one.

          • Devon Murray

As with Guru, I apologize for the name calling and the suggestion of “killing yourself” it was wrong. I believe that Kobe still has enough to get the Lakers back on track and with the right moves by the FO, one more run at a Championship. With no real top level FA available 2015/16 is hen the Lakers will be, I feel, looking to seriously reload, which is Kobe’s last year…

  • ColeWorldNoBlanket

Simmons is a lifetime Celtics dick gobbler and strangely a Clippers season ticket holder at the same time, so his comments about anything involving the Lakers hold absolutely no weight.

    • vdogg

    • BBall Truth

And…like most people on this Laker fan board are Laker d1ck gobblers and Kobe d1ck gobblers.

Bottom line…if Kove really wanted to have a chance at another championship run he would have taken less. That can’t be refuted. The franchise has to deal with a cap and more importantly a hard cap now.

I guess Kobe doesn’t care as much about another championship as he does money.

  • Gregory Choa

Bill Simmons, perhaps the world’s biggest and most notorious Lakers hater, is literally exempt from this discussion (even though he instigated it in the first place, this time around) because he doesn’t understand that this 2 year deal for Kobe was primarily about the franchise taking care of one of its own – and a guy who still literally remains not only the face of the franchise, and the guy principally responsible for a HUGE chuck of its annual revenues, but the longest tenured player with one team in the history of the game not named John Stockton.

  • loisloves

Bill Simmons has never had a nice thing to say about Kobe or the Lakers!!!! Go Rag on your illustrious Celtics. Turn the channel folks…same ole same ole.
