Lakers News: Julius Randle Still Doesn’t Know If He’ll Play In Summer League

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

Rookie Julius Randle is starting to feel comfortable in his new surrounding in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, even though Randle has been cleared to play in the NBA Summer League next week, the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes have held up contract talks with the Kentucky product.

Lakers Nation Store Is Back! Check Out The Latest Gear!

According to Lakers Nation reporter Serena Winters, Randle won’t be able to play in the Summer League for the Lakers if he’s not signed before Friday:

The Lakers are currently going all out in their pursuit for superstar Carmelo Anthony in free agency. With all the focus being on signing Carmelo, Randle’s contract negotiations has taken a backseat.

Although many anticipate Carmelo announcing his free agent decision on Monday, there’s been no deadline set by the superstar. Reports surfaced on Sunday that Carmelo’s decision might be made later in the week.

Hopefully, Randle can sign before the team leaves for Las Vegas later this week. Although Carmelo is expected to make his decision early in the week, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that this process is drawn out a bit longer.

ugh, come on melo… make a choice already!!! the suspense is killing me here!

    • LAK3R4LIF3

It’ll come via Tweet “he’s taking his talents to sunny socal” or the other….these guy’s loves to tweet….keep an eye on his tweeter acct.

    • Bryan

      Me too

  • LakerSpartan117

I hope he plays Friday. He was the prospect I was looking forward most to watching. Well I hope he signs that contract soon.

GOD this Melo decision is taking FOREVER! I keep getting this feeling he is going to resign with the Knicks. Melo shouldn’t put his trust into Phil Jackson, whom he’s only known for a couple months now…. He should trust his longtime friend Kobe.

    COME TO LA MELO!!

    • vdogg

true, and i love fisher.. but you just don’t know how he’s gonna be as a coach.

    • LAK3R4LIF3

He doesn’t really need to play, you know what he can do. You should pay attention to the other players on the roster though, esp Kane.

      • LakerSpartan117

I’ll be watching Kendall’s improvement, if there are any, and Clarkson/Kane as well.
I have a feeling LaQuinton Ross is going to come up big…

  • Thomas Klein

Contract negotiations, WHAT? He’s a 1st round draft pick, the league dictates the amount and term of his contract down to the penny, he was drafted 7th, that means he gets 3.128 million for three years with an option in the 4th year, end of story, and he automatically counted for that when they drafted him, signing him or not signing him has NO EFFECT on pursuing Melo, or any other F/A.

    • jon snow

The allotted salary for the 7 spot is 2.541 million. Under the cba, teams and players are able to negotiate up to a 80%-120% of that salary. Typically, the higher a player is drafted, the more likely it is that he
will earn 120 percent of the scaled salary associated with his draft
      position.

  • jeremy

i wouldn’t care if he played or not let him rest up for the season. at this point he in line to start

    • comrade24

These guys usually improve a lot during summer league. He needs to play

      • jeremy

he might improve but he will be going up against most guys who wont even play in the NBA. so why not just get rest not take a risk of a injury and get ready for the season.

        • Badazztj12

They do have NBA size though, which will get him ready for the NBA

        • ha

jeremy looks like a kid rapist or some things. ha

  • sam jr

Lakers need to move on from Melo. Go young, hurry up and get Lance Stephenson in board. Then try Bledsoe or Chandler Parsons. Giving 4 year max to a 30 year old player is a terrible move, just look at how Pau Gasol regressed after Lakers gave him the new $19 M per year extension at age 30. This team badly needs youth, not dinosaurs.

    • right

Hmm..Tim Duncan just won his 5th ring. I guess not even age can stop them dinosaurs from winning.

      • jeremy

but Duncan also had alot of help with a lot of talent around him

        • right

Agreed. It takes a team to win, but it doesn’t change the fact that Duncan (38), Ginobili (36), Parker (32), Diaw (32) can still be effective to win. And to be fair…Brown and Antoni don’t know how to properly use Gasol. Just like the Bobcats didn’t know how to use Diaw.

          • jeremy

that why for once star power didnt work for the heat. if we just sign b scott already and get him a decent PG and a big the lakers i believe will be 2x better

  • Lakers Nation #24

WTF Kinda BS attitude is this???Ship his ass out like Kobe said lol no but seriously why is he backing out of the Summer League?I mean even Aaron Gordon,Marcus Smart who were pick ahead of him are playing every Summer League game.Is he beefing with Mitch or something? What is the real reason?Even Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker are going to play in the Summer League? What is he butt hurt over these silly trade rumors so LBJ+Carmelo come to LA?I am sad by Julius saying shit like i might not play IDK blowing it off basically.Very concerned now SMH.

    • comrade24

He doesn’t have a choice in the matter. You misread the post. He can’t play unless the Lakers sign him, which they haven’t supposedly because of the Melo situation but that’s stupid because of reasons mentioned by others above

      • Lakers Nation 24

Oh my bad sorry to Julius Randle i thought he was being a holdout or he was just refusing to play in The Summer League.I was under the impression he was able to play even without being signed but he must be signed from what other people are saying.I was only joking about about the first part that’s why i said lol actually it was rehashing the Kobe in the parking lot screaming ship Andrew Bynum out for Jason Kidd back in the day.I like Julius Randle seems like a good guy and good player.I hope that he plays this summer.

  • Jim213

    Per Adrian Wojnarowski (Yahoo)
“Danny Granger agrees to deal with Heat”

So far Riley (Heat) have been the team that’s capitalized the most in FA.

    • Jim213

      Per Adrian Wojnarowski:

“Channing Frye has agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal with the Magic, source tells Yahoo Sports.”

  • comrade24

This is getting old. Regardless of Melo we should sign Randle. It’s not like were gonna waive him

    • jeremy

plus it not like were signing him for a lot at most he will make around 2.5 a season

  • Badazztj12

Didn’t the Foot Specialist said he was cleared to play and no need for surgery? Why haven’t we signed him yet?

    • jeremy

      one word melo

      • Badazztj12

not an excuse if we get Melo or not. This is a top ten lottery pick here

        • jeremy

well doesnt look like the lakers will sign anyone till they figure out if they get melo or not

          • nlruizjr

unfortunately not every team is waiting for Melo or James, they are busy signing good role players while others are waiting and losing role players, like the Lakers, just lost Meeks, Kaman and Farmar and could possibly lose Hill and Bazemore.

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

It looks like Mitch McGary is the only rookie to sign a contract so far. I wouldn’t worry about it.

  • rival

The NBA tried to screw us in the lottery by moving us back a spot instead of moving us up, but the basketball gods said na we decide who goes where and blessed us with randle.

    • vdogg

i’m more and more excited by randle. people said he couldn’t shoot, but his jumper looks pretty smooth, actually.

      • rival

Yea I wasnt very fond of him when we drafted him but the more I watch film on him the more he grows on me. They say he’s slow but if you look at his dribble, he moves fast with the ball when he attacks the rim.

    • Lander Diaz

Randle will be okay. This article’s just pure speculation. He’s a very good basketball player and I just wish that he becomes another charles barkley for LA. just needs to show he’s got D.

  • RUDY T.

Carmelo Anthony is already verbally agreed to The Lakers from what i gather and Mitch is just waiting to find a trade partner to take the Steve Nash contract off our hands and Julius Randle will be included in that trade to get the other team agree to take the expiring contract of Steve Nash plus they get a great young player Julius Randle for just a future pick that’s a great deal for the team absorbing the contracts.Mitch would have already signed Julius Randle if he was staying for sure now that he is not playing in the Summer League you know he is getting traded or at the very least he might be included in a trade to dump salary to open up room to sign Carmelo Anthony and another star player that is high priced. This says a lot.I fully expect Julius Randle to get traded by Friday. It’s the price of trading Nash.

    • rival

Wow I guess trading randle only make sense if we’re getting melo and one other notable player.

    • Badazztj12

Where the source? Why not stretch Nash, which makes sense

    • vdogg

you have no idea what you’re talking about. randle isn’t going anywhere. the reason he hasn’t been signed yet is that the lakers can save 500k worth of cap space if melo signs first. don’t believe me? check out mark medina’s twitter. the lakers want melo and randle to play TOGETHER.

    • DKWTTY

From what you gather? Where did you gather this information? Noway they trade Randle, they already said they weren’t.

    • AK

You’re a idiot lakers arnt trading Randle hes a lock you’re reading into a false rumor that came out a week before the draft

    • OG RiceBone

One of the reasons Melo would come here is because of Randle.

  • Jim Ballard

Phil probably told Melo to string LA along so they miss the rest of the cream while waiting. Suspect he is going to stay and take the 5 years.

    • vdogg

phil also told melo he would give him the max and then reportedly backed off it afterwards.

    • GOD Chri$$$
  • GOD Chri$$$ #Depressed
  • DKWTTY

This Melo thing is holding up a lot of other things. It’s frustrating and annoying. He needs to just make a decision already!

  • LakersHeatBeef

I really want to see Julius Randle play in the Summer League on Friday.I hope everything is okay with him and i thought he was under contract all the other lottery picks are signed up and their is insurance a team can buy for the player if a contract is not signed. If he is signed then disregard that theory but if he isn’t signed yet why not? It’s a slotted rookie pay scale he can’t make more or less it’s fixed salary for rookies.Anyways i hope he doesn’t get traded i keep hearing he might get traded along Steve Nash and Robert Sacre but i think he should stay for sure.

    • vdogg

he’s not going anywhere. check our mark medina’s twitter.

  • rival

Come on melo sign already so you can play on the summer team!

  • jeremy

no coach and no team thanks to wanting to wait for melo or lebron

  • D-money

Great trade scenario here. Lakers could sign and trade Pau in a 3 way. Lakers send Minnesota Randle, Nash & their 2016 1st. Minnesota would get Chicago’s 2015 1st Rd & maybe another player for Gasol. BOTTOM LINE…
CHICAGO GETS:Gasol. LAKERS GET: LOVE. WOLVES GET: RANDLE, NASH & BULLS 2015 1st & LAKERS 2016 FIRST. From there if I’m Lakers I sign Eric Bledsoe & re-visit Brons agent to complete deal.

    • vdogg

      keep dreaming.

    • GOD Chri$$$
    • jeremy

wolves want alot for love so i dont see how a trade like that would help. since wolves wanted klay from the warriors

      • D-money

They would be getting Randle to replace Love and an extra 1st Rd pick for 2 yrs. An expiring contract (Nash) for 2015 FA plus probably a young player from Chicago in the deal.

        • jeremy

i still dont see a trade like that happening for what the wolves are asking for that trade doesnt seem right

          • D-money

They can ask for Klay but that ain’t happenin’ lol.

    • rival

Only if they throw in lavine

    • courtney harris

      stop… just stop

  • Badazztj12

Why are you guys trying so badly to trade our top 10 lottery pick for? Kind of stupid just saying….

  • rival

Love and lavine in that 3 way trade any day

  • jeremy

last time lakers got a top 10 pick he did help get 2 rings. so keeping randle wont be so bad since he has alot of talent and he cheap about 2.5 mill a year cheap

    • D-money

Is Randle going to get us Bron ?

      • jeremy

might not get bron but he could get us melo.

      • courtney harris

who wants lebron? BETTER QUESTION, what is this contagious (and very stupid) idea that if lebron isnt on you’re team, you’re not going to win. lebron is not coming to LA. STOP BEING ONE OF THOSE HOMER FANS WHO IS FULL OF BIAS.. you are embarrassing the rest of us logical thinkers. last time i checked lebron AND TWO OTHER TOP 10 PICKS IN THE SAME CLASS

lost to a dallas mavericks team WITH DIRK HAVING THE FLU.

They also lost to a spurs team..(dont need to describe that recent beat-down).

remind you that team consisted of ray allen, d wade, lebron, bosh, (mike miller record shooting night in one finals vs OKC), and very decent shooting bench players

  • rival

Would you guys rather have lance Stevenson or klay Thompson?

    • jeremy

lance because lakers can actually get him. there no way lakers can get klay

      • rival

Klay would be next year obviously

        • jeremy

but do the lakers want to wait or get players now and warriors wouldnt let klay go so easy. so laker i bet would have to give him a pretty good contract just to have a chance

    • GOD Chri$$$
      • rival

Right? That’s what I’m saying, people saying if we don’t get melo let’s get guys like lance , I think klay is meant to be Kobe’s replacement for the next 10 years. We need to think about next years freeagents as well.

    • Badazztj12

Lance because he is only 23 and can do more things with the ball, and plays better defense. I know Klay can play defense but Lance is like a brick wall

    • D-money

      Klay

  • jeremy

another pf/center off the list frye just sign with the magic

  • jeremy

the way players are going left and right here my guess for the 2014 lakers

pg marshall ,nelson,or thomas and clarkson

    sg kobe kane Henry

    sf idk melo,()

    pf randle,kelly

center pau or Okafor and sacre

    • Badazztj12

      Mario Chalmers
      Kobe Bryant
Lance S.(Kobe and him can switch most games)
      Randle
      Gasol

      • courtney harris

thats what i thinnk.. if we dont get melo.

      • rival

It be cool if we could throw Thomas in there. I hate Chalmers

        • courtney harris

i dont like chalmers myself.. he should go down as the luckiest dude in nba history for being a part of such a great team. he rode the wave blah blah.. anyway putting my dislike for him away for 2 seconds – i actually wouldnt mind his shooting.. he is not a bad defender either. he is very serviceable.

        • jeremy

thomas really want to be a laker from the way he talks. it wouldnt be a bad thing.

        • Badazztj12

I don’t like Chalmers too but I like his defense. Beside Kobe and Lance gonna get more touches anyway. Thomas is gonna get shot over and blown by West Conf. pg’s. East is too easy

          • rival

Really bledsoe would be a better choice over both lol

          • Badazztj12

True but you know Suns will go back after him when Lebron and Melo gets signed

          • D-money

            We need Bledsoe.

  • rival

I love being on melowatch. Specially with Maryjane involved.

  • Harvey

    Did we get Carmelo yet?

    • rival

      Nope

      • vdogg

        but we will.

  • D-money

Lakers could sign parsons sf, pg Bledsoe and gasol or c monroe. We’d be nice

    • Marcus Franco

We would be great but I don’t think Suns will let Bledsoe walk away, our best choice is Thomas.

  • http://www.niknokseyer.com/ Niknok Seyer

I don’t get why they need to wait. Does this means if Melo signs to LA, LA doesn’t get Randle?! Lakers should get both of them. >.<

  • Darius

I wonder why Mitch has not signed him?I heard once a rookie is signed it takes a 30 day period to trade the player it could be longer but i heard 30 days. And Mitch might be waiting to do a trade involving Randle+Nash+Sacre to get enough money under the cap to sign both LeBron+Carmelo at around $20,500,000 each. The indication is he will be traded if he hasn’t signed yet because his rookie contract counts against the cap even if he doesn’t sign it they call it a rookie cap hold.I honestly think something huge is brewing behind the scenes with the Lakers FO as i think LeBron+Carmelo are signing with The Lakers to play with Kobe Bryant to start a new Big 3 in LA with Kobe+LeBron+Carmelo.I am captain obvious now that they are saying Julius Randle is not signed yet.

    • Kenneth Simkins

He is not going to be traded! The Lakers save $500,000 if Melo signs first so thats why they havent signed Randal yet! Randal is our future and will help us next year and be a ROY candidate! Lebron is not coming to the Lakers!

      • independentbynature

If he’s our future, why are they stunting his development by keeping him out of summer league? All this groveling for Melo is embarrassing.

  • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

I don’t understand this story at all. Only two rookies from this draft class have signed contracts so far. What’s the big deal?

    • independentbynature

Don’t know how you get that.I’m watching summer league and they’re all playing.

      • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Exactly my point. The only rookies who have signed contracts so far are Mitch McGary (OKC) and Jordan Adams (Memphis). And Zach Levine (Minnesota) signed today. At least that’s what ESPN is reporting–espn . go . com/nba/transactions. Maybe the rest have all signed summer league contracts?

        • independentbynature

IDK.I thought they couldn’t play until signing their contracts. In case of injuries. Why would they risk it?And don’t most of them have insurance policies?Curious.

  • independentbynature

So now we’re going to sacrifice the development of our prize rookie to wait on Melo, too? Maybe they should’ve thought of all this before giving Kobe 48 mil. They were bidding against themselves, too.
