Lakers News: Jeanie Buss To Be Involved In Pitch To Carmelo Anthony

The Lakers brass intend to do everything within their power to lure LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony to Los Angeles this summer. Although Mitch Kupchak and company will go all-out in their pursuit of these superstars, Anthony might be the only one of the two that is a realistic option for the Lakers.

On Thursday, the Lakers front office will meet with Anthony to give him their sales pitch. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Jeanie Buss will be apart of the meeting:

As of right now, the chances of the Lakers landing Carmelo in free agency seems to be slim. Even though Anthony will come in for a meeting with Buss and company on Thursday, many believe the superstar will end up with the Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, or back with the New York Knicks.

One thing the Lakers have going for them is the ability to sign Carmelo to a max contract. The Knicks can offer the most money at $129 million over five years, but the Lakers can offer $96 million over four years.

It remains to be seen if the allure of Los Angeles and the prospect of playing alongside his close friend Kobe Bryant will be enough to seal the deal. Bringing in Jeanie to help pitch Carmelo will most likely help the situation for Los Angeles, but it’ll still be a tough sell to land one of the biggest names available on the free agent market.

YES!!!! Also bring in those kids that asked K. Love if he is coming to play for the Lakers. No one can say no to littles kids!

    • truth24

      wtf, NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    • DP

Jim Buss is getting shitted on during free agency.Jeanie Buss has a old sugar daddy named Phil that will be retaining his prime free agent Carmelo Anthony.Come on now Ball Cap Jim Buss versus Phil Jackson Game Over.

Also factor in Chicago is in play as a strong favorite if Carmelo leaves money on the table with New York. And yes Morey and Houston have a good chance at getting Carmelo and Mark Cuban is also in the mix.We have NO chance at signing Carmelo Anthony our roster sucks and we have no coach why the hell would Carmelo Anthony pick the Lakers over better teams???

Jim Buss is a loser and a idiot with no business being in the NBA as a owner and absolutely he has no idea what he is doing as a NBA primary decision maker and he is a rookie owner that needs experience and someone needs to show him the ropes of being a great owner apparently he never paid attention to his father the successful Jerry Buss.Lakers are in dark days close up shop this is the end of the championships and playoffs for us Lakers fans and that’s the way it is until Jim Buss signs a meaningful group of free agents or he needs to gain assets via trade. Also hire a damn head coach already stupid inept incompetent FO.

      • keenanjen

If he doesn’t bring a championship team to the Lakers he will step down, those are his words and trust me I’m pretty sure that was in some sort of agreement that his father drew up. Dr. Buss was not a dumb man, that’s why Jennie is over everything Lakers.

      • Chrmngblly

Wow. Finally. Welcome to the fight.

If you care to share it, Jim Buss:

        http://thedailysportsheralddotblogspotdotcom/2014/03/jim-buss-timeline-and-decline-of-lakersdothtml

You know the [dot] period thing.

        Good to see you, DP.

    • Leon

I think the reason Julius Randle is flying to see a foot specialist tomorrow at the request of Carmelo Anthony he probably told the Lakers to have medical records ready to share for Julius Randle and Kobe Bryant.

Then if Julius Randle checks out okay then Carmelo Anthony will be much more comfortable signing with The Lakers. Also Carmelo probably would love to see Kobe Bryant workout for him to prove he is healthy enough to play basketball at a high level.Maybe a game of one on one between Kobe and Carmelo will answer any questions Carmelo may have regarding Kobe.

If Carmelo Anthony signs with the Lakers he will be compared to Elgin Baylor a Lakers Legend. Both great scorers. Also the Lakers can pitch that they can still add another player from free agency like Kyle Lowry or whoever he wants that is in the price range.

  • vdogg

good to hear! go get ‘em, jeanie!!

  • Zimmeredge

Oh no please not jeanie. Not after what she has done with dwight… Now Lakers are in trouble if they want to land melo. Jeanie please stay away from this. Don’t hang your stupid f***ing banners again. Not her again. We need Mitch, we need Kobe, we need Jim, we need Pau and that´s it. Just sign and hand the contract, show the 16 trophies and that´s it.

    • vdogg

give her a break. this is her team as much as it is jim’s. besides, have you seen the billboards the bulls have put up for melo?

      • Zimmeredge

Yeah and i round that ridiculous for a franchise with history. It’s not disneyworld. Don’t get me wrong i love jeanie ;).
LN is giving me headaches with their rockets and bulls ahead of us. They both have to get ride of a lot of player if they want to land melo. I guess the rockets can do that if they trade lin but who’s going to take lin for 8m? Bulls with 17m boozer have a lot to do.
Plus the Lakers can give him more money and we can still bring back Pau. No one knows what kind of paycut he’ll take. Then stretch Nash.

    • KwonGuerillaCross

Dumbest post I’ve seen all summer.

      • Zimmeredge

Really? Thanks for the compliment. But if you like to feel humiliated for that terrible communication with Dwight’s banners that’s your problem. I’m still ashamed of it. We were ridiculous to kneel like this in front of this guy.
I love jeanie and i hope she’ll have a positive impact but you’ll have to do better than stupid banners next Time. Jerry did not have to show anything. He gave the player a tour, have a Man to Man, honest speech and that was it.

    • comrade24

Jeanie actually wasn’t present during the Dwight recruitment. It’s a good sign she’s getting involved.

      • BULL

very good sign, especially when she was around her father when he did his magic! lol get it.. oh any way, lol im happy she will be in there.. Mitch would of been the only one knowing what the hell he would be doing lmao ..

      • Zimmeredge

But she made the banners last summer knowing perfectly that Howard was on his way out.
I’m happy she’s there but i hope jeanie and Jim will push in the same direction this Time.

        • comrade24

I think there was a lot discord between them after the D’Antoni/Phil hiring. It seems like that has been resolved. Time will tell i suppose

        • jim2

Jim buss needs to hire Jerry West as a consultant and listen closely to him. This will help and Kobe/Nash must be retired to start rebuilding the Lakers. The Lakers will lose most of their good players waiting on super stars that will not sign with the Lakers. The Lakers will be almost as bad this year as last.

          • Zimmeredge

If we can’t lure a superstar unfortunately that’s gonna happen. We will be in the same position when magic left the game when kobe’s gone and without a face of the franchise.

        • Chrmngblly

F*ck Jim Buss. WTF do we need that pothead for? Is he the face we need on the franchise? Let Jeanie be our “Dragon Lady.” We need one.

          • Zimmeredge

I think that because he is being so conservative about certain aspects of the game and especially the cap he is a great asset to have. You can’t do all with banners, emotional stuff. I criticized Jim this year because he was money cautious when we needed a pg. Right now i’m being patient. And i will tell you if this summer is handed well and when i say handed well i mean Landing a marquee fa then of and Lakers are halfway back to their standards. The other half is… Winning champs.

          • Chrmngblly

Zim, read this history of Jim Buss and you tell me if he is our savior or not:

            http://thedailysportsheralddotblogspotdotcom/2014/03/jim-buss-timeline-and-decline-of-lakersdothtml

Change the [dot]s to periods, you know…Let me know what you think.

          • Zimmeredge

I’m saying that he is the savoir at all. I’m just being positive and optimistic. I mean if ur fans do not believe in our team where are we going? And positive on this one jeanie wońt be much better. Phil would have been a great face but Jerry Buss did not want him anymore. Kids are just respecting his last thought. We must support them, be critical if we do not agree but never give up your trust or confidence.

          • Chrmngblly

Well, the Buss Plan, as it has been bandied about, seems mainly concerned with making sure the Buss kids have jobs for life. I understand the wishes of a dying old man, hoping his wayward son finally gets some sand under the wheels and makes something of himself. So far, though, Jim Buss is just a pothead.

I know a thimble full about great organizations. One thing that is clear to me is that excellence starts at the top. If there’s no excellence there, there’s no excellence anywhere. That is the way it is through out all of life.
Great players are not going to think highly of Jimbo the pothead. They would have loved working for Phil. And they probably will.

Jerry Buss wanted Phil out because he knew Phil would have them all eating out of his hand eventually. I think he guessed right. Now we need to fear Phil. But Jimbo Buss is no answer to that. We need a man of character and accomplishment. It’s been a hell of a botch so far.

          • Zimmeredge

It true that Jimmy has a hard time finding his own way but he is tryin. He is not the open his father once was. When you look at him he is almost too conservative and he is not as charismatic as Jerry was but never will be. He is not mark cuban either hahaha. He did some bad things in process but who doesńt? Jerry did not negotiate the post magic era very well. And coming in, taking charge at the end or in between of an era -kobe’s era- is not simple. The last 15years have been hell of good Time there is always some bad days or years before it goes up again Jimmy is just trying to avoid that period by bringing a big name asap someone like melo.

    • DKWTTY

Smarter than her brother and she’s the PRESIDENT. You think she’s gonna sit in her office and do nothing? lol. Jeanie is a sweetheart. How can Melo say no to her? lol

      • Zimmeredge

She’s a real charm for sure, and no i do not expect her to sit in her office. But she has to go out there with the prestige that the Lakers instill. No stupid flags or banners out there until we can sing the diva’s air. Lakers are the Lakers and you come to play for that jersey Ready to sacrifice your Life once you’ve done that then, maybe your jersey is retired, fans love you and we hang true banners up high in the Staples center. I hope it’s gonna happen.

        • DKWTTY

Okay we get it. We all hated the banners thing. Her dad had just died and she was trying to find her own way and hold on to that punk bitch Dwight. It was a bad move because it didn’t work, if it did no one would have cared. Let’s move past that already. Not all players care about our Lakers “prestige” as evidenced by Dwight Howard leaving. It means nothing to these new breed of players these days. That isn’t always going to work. You can’t just say “Hey we’re the Lakers, check our banners, your jersey will be retired and fans will love you.” Some of them do not care!!

          • VillainKing

            heheheh..correct “PUNK BITCH DWIGHT”!!!!!!!!!!

          • Chrmngblly

Finally, you agree with me about that big Vagina, Dwight Howard. That man is a woman.

You are my slave, anyway, VanillaKling. Polish my knob.

          • VillainKing

You and Dwight are the same both of you are fucking bitch..Chrmngay you are my personal bitch slave like your mother..Suck my extra large dick Chrmngay..heheheh!!

      • Chrmngblly

She needs to step up and strap on her brass balls right now.

        • VillainKing

Your the one who needs to step-up and suck my extra large dick Chrmngay like your mother does..heheheh!!!

          • Chrmngblly

Please. Can we quit this? It is juvenile and I find no wit or charm in it.

          • VillainKing

YEAH you should quit Chrmngay..accept that your a gay and a dick lover!!heheheh..

  • Derek Clark

They better make sure he gets a good look at those 16 championship trophies.

Also, I believe they need to highlight that it will be a better situation to raise his kids than in Chicago, as Melo has expressed that his wife and kids will be one of his primary motivations.

If Melo is smart, Houston ain’t got a ghost of a chance. He don’t wanna play with ball-dominant James Harden and complain-about-my-touches Dwight Howard.

    • Zimmeredge

Bulls and rockets are impossible destination. Sport-wise it’s a dream destination because they already have a roster in place with younger players.
Imo it makes more sense to play with Bryant and Pau rather than harden and dwight. I could understand rose and noah and thibs but honestly melo teaming up with Bryant and gasol knowing that we have randle for the future. We have something to pitch here.
Let’s not Forget that we can sell him the same type of trématent Kobe received: being respected, having loyal owners who’ll pay because of what you brought to the franchise etc etc. The guy could get big dollars for the rest of his Life. Lakers or knicks.

      • comrade24

Exactly. THIS is why i tried to rebuff those that criticized Kobe’s contract. Yes, it was exorbitant, but THIS is the purpose. To show FA’s that we take care of our own. Hopefully it works

        • Zimmeredge

This franchise has always been about that after all: building one two punch.
What’s melo’s brand going to look like with the beard and dwight around? Which team is stupid enough to acquire lin by dropping a couple of draft pick? Rose is designated player by the bulls and they have to ditch booz…so they are long shots: can’t give him a Max deal or a long deal. I mean melo might earn 129m in 5y with the knicks and he will play for less than 80 for four years in windy city. That’s crap.
We can give him the Max and we can offer him a roster this year and after 2016 when kobe’s out. So he has a four year Windows.
Knicks and Lakers all the way. He could stay with the knicks but he will loose one year with bargnani and stoud and knicks will face stiff competition from us next summer and in 16.

          • kookiebuger

Honestly the Bulls is in a much better situation they play in a weaker conference, have an excellent coach, have an excellent defensive team (plus Defensive Player of the Year Noah) to mask his defense, and all they need from is to score. The Lakers don’t have none of that, they have a 36 year old Kobe Bryant who comes with a lot of questions (Will he be the same? Can he stay healthy? Can they play together? Who will be the go to scorer?) a 40 year old Nash, Sacre and Randle (Who may or may not pan out). Once Kobe retires their is no guarantee that they can bring in another top talent player especially when Melo will be 32 at the time, the team will just be stuck in the same situation. He will be rquired to take a pay cut with the Bulls once they amnesty Boozer but he will be on a contender compared to the Lakers where he will face the Spurs, Thunder, Clippers, Rockets for a title and against 2nd/3rd tier teams in the Warriors, Portland, Memphis, Dallas, possibly the Suns, possibly the Nuggets, and possibly the Pelicans.

          • Zimmeredge

I dont care about the roster i’m talking about this from a financial standpoint. And then when you answer the difficulty of giving melo a good contract then you have to have a roster. They have good starters but no bench. They will use the Amnesty on him because dońt expect Phil to sign and trade him for boozer…. So they will be limited from a financial standpoint. Melo will loose bird rights wherever he goes and so the bulls will have trouble going above the salary cap to bring back Dj this year or butler next summer.
It´s just maths and cba rules and what you can do. Within those rules.
I strongly believe that we have the best chance
Talking about kobe’s âge and injury. What about drose?
I might be wrong but i believe in melo. It’s not a sure thing. Most of it will dépend on Pau, Nash roster and coach. The advantage that we have is that we can easily solve those questions. Anyway, melo or not, i believe that we will have a good team next season.

            Ps:let´s not Forget

          • Zimmeredge

Edit: ps let’s not Forget that windy city is covered in ice one fourth a year now, hahaha

          • kookiebuger

D Rose is 25/26 years old and can play as the 2nd option with Melo there, the Bulls proven they can still be competitive without Rose making it to the 2nd round without him 1 years ago and the 1st round this year. Losing D.J. and Butler would probably hurt their team but compared to Melo I think they will be willing to risk losing them.

          • Zimmeredge

Dj and butler are hell of great defenders.
Do not Forget that thibs is over playing players due to the lack of depth. Rose was meant to came back on tip top form. That Lasted 2 weeks unfortunately for him.

          • Chrmngblly

Who is Dj? Never heard of this name.

          • Chrmngblly

            Do you mean DJ Augustine?

          • Zimmeredge

            Dj Augustin.

          • Chrmngblly

            Why the little “j”?

          • Zimmeredge

            Ipad’s autocorrection

          • Chrmngblly

Ha…I thought you were referring to a new player from Arabia or someplace….:-)

          • Zimmeredge

I have a hard Time posting on my iPad with this damn option. Haha. It’s like you wanna wrote something that makes sense then, all of sudden your sentence does not make any sense anymore. Are we stupid compared to a fu*cking iPad or whatever phone or tablets… Smh

          • Chrmngblly

I have been Mind-whipped by some calculators.

          • KB8

I agree with you, the Bulls are the better fit right now. However, in my opinion, it’s not about just winning now, it’s about winning now and in the future. The Bulls will have to do a lot of moving around in order to make enough financial space to pay Melo a reasonable salary. Getting rid of Boozer would be a start. But you also have to consider that in 2 years, Noah and Butler are free agents. If they play well, do you think that they will be willing to take a significant paycut in order to let Melo receive more money? I’m not sure if they will. Tony Snell will be on their roster for another 4 years unless they get rid of him. They also have to find a way to deal with the Taj Gibson issue if they want to get Melo because he’s fairly expensive as well. They are a great situation but they are a situation with a lot of IFs. With LA, they can easily sign him and increase his salary yearly without worries. Plus the fact that they reward their stars handsomely (KB24′s new contract) helps too. If he really wants the money, he could stick in NY as well and just wait for them to clear cap space. I think there’s a big chance he could come to LA, more of a chance than people think, then again, I root for the Lakers.

          • Zimmeredge

Exactly. It’s between la and knicks anyway. When james and bosh decided to go to Miami, Miami had a lot of financial flexibility so they could come up with those moves, they didńt have to make last minutes moves defending on IFs. They Knew they would be in the right position at the right moment. And it panned out.
A year ago we wanted to be there, we wanted to have cap Space to attract a big name. We are right where we wanted to be. If it happens then great good job fo. If it doesn’t no problem we have other solutions this summer and for the future.

          • kookiebuger

That’s fair enough but if the Lakers offer him a max then what about the rest of the team? They will only have 8-9 million to to sign the rest of the team when with Kobe making 23 million, Melo making 20 million, Nash 10 million, Randle 2-3 million, and Sacre making a million. Young will probably want 4-6 million and the rest will with either have to be one and done’s or d- league players leaving the team without a bench and a poor defensive team. So in other words a 1st round exit at least the year.

      • kookiebuger

I don’t understand how that will be enough to convince Melo.

        • Zimmeredge

Bulls have rose as their designated player, Amnesty booz and get melo in they cańt build a decent team. They have an excellent starting five but they have Dj to give an extension this summer. Butler next summer. They lost hinrich and they have to after a center to cover their ass up in case get injured. They don’t have a good gs as well. They better bring in hayward or parsons and stephensons or bradley.
Rockets already have the beard and dwight How and where melo will be able to get his touches. Plus they have coach Mchale who has basically the same approach to the game than mda. Running, running, running and shooting, shooting, shooting.
Those two teams are meant to ask melo a huge paycut regarding the Max contract he might get in knicks. We are talking 10m paycut for a superstar. He will have to play for 15m because as you Know it wages increases over years.
In knicks he could earn that big money. But Phil does not want to give him. He has already asked him to take a paycut to give the team some flexibility this summer and future summer. Although melo might take a substantial paycut he won’t play for than 17. And he will loose at least to season with the knicks with no guaranty to win.
He will be offered a Max deal by la. Something like 80m in 4y. 4 years? Two with Kobe and two on his own with randle growing up and probably and team gathered around him. So it´s basically 4 years window for a title. If successful he will get another contract from the fo that will express our respect, loyalty that he has Shawn for the brand.
If he comes to la he has the certainty to have a great team around him for 4 or more years.
Neither the rockets, the bulls, the knicks or us will hand him a Ready-to-win team. But the Lakers have a bigger, better, longer history at winning trophies and we will have Kobe (5) and maybe Pau (2). From a family standpoint, la has more to offer than Houston or Chicago…

          • rival almighty

Good points Plus we can ask him what freeagent he wants next year

          • kookiebuger

If the Lakers get Melo this year they probably won’t have enough to sign another max free agent unless Melo takes a massive pay cut.

          • comrade24

not in 2015 unless we get real creative, however we will have Nash’s contract come off the books and in 2016 Kobe’s 25 mil come off the books coincidentally at the same time Durant could test the FA waters.

          • Zimmeredge

Although i love durant i cańt see him wearing 35 in la.
They will be a lot of good fa in 2016 other than him and être fit with him. I guess when kobe’s gone we will go after our pg. And randle will be 22-23. Man future seems bright anyway.

          • comrade24

I used to say the same about Durant, however i don’t know now. If he fails to win a title in the next two seasons i think he might explore free agency. OKC are never spenders in free agency, don’t have a lot to attract free agents, and if he realizes he can’t win there i think he moves on. LA would be perfect for him

          • Zimmeredge

We need melo. We need him to make the bridge between kobe’s era and a new boy in Town randle or someone else. If we can’t make a bridge between those era, with no picks coming. We wońt be winning within the next 3-4seasons.

          • comrade24

couldn’t agree more. If not they’re going to have to scramble and find some way to make the playoffs this season to help attract FA’s in 2015 while still saving cap space for a max guy. Don’t think Plan B is realistically possible.

          • Zimmeredge

I guess if we can’t land melo we will go straight into Scramble mode again. But it’s for the best imo. You don’t want to acquire player that you will overpay for 4-5 years and find yourself in an embush and realize that you can’t trade because of their contract, too old or better for cheaper. I mean look at deng, ariza, lowry, parsons. All those guys are great but they aren’t all star (in the west) or superstars and they will ask plus 12m a year to come play in LA. Lay low. Thursday’s a big day.

    • comrade24

not to mention Harden turns into a dissapearing act in games that matter. See 2012 Finals, 2013/14 playoffs.

    • comrade24

Chicago= Murder Capital of America. Great place to raise your kids and freeze your ass off at the same time.

    • DKWTTY

Don’t forget that his wife is an actress too and all her friends are in LA.

We don’t have much right now in terms of a team but location wise we win that battle. I don’t know I’d still think Houston and Chicago are more attractive spots right now. It’s not like he’ll be living in the hood.

  • Kermit

Jim Buss just can’t get the job done.He kept saying in 2014 the team will sign great free agents and now he thinks he might get Carmelo? This free agency period has been so freaking boring as a Lakers fan yawn we are about to lose our starters and young bench players from our 27-55 team yawn i am pretty tired from waiting year after year for Jim Buss to right the ship and put us on a clear path to success.Mitch Kupchak is a nice guy and he is alright at being a GM so it’s not working out anymore with the Lakers FO maybe Mitch should resign and leave Jim Buss.

    • Kobe Gagnon

This free agent period. . . JUST STARTED TODAY. Some of you people smoke Crack

      • KB8

        Amen.

      • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Lol right? Players have to meet with teams, discuss contracts, talk it over with family, etc. We’re only 20 hours into this “boring free agency period.”

I’m as anxious as anyone to see the pieces land, but I’m waiting until at least Friday before I begin to scratch my head.

        • Kobe Gagnon

Yeah we meet with Carmelo Thursday. I do believe we can’t sit around waiting for Carmelo or LeBron and watch everyone get picked off, but day 1 is premature to be whining. Friday seems about right to start pondering

          • nlruizjr

yeah, the Lakers should have some idea who they want to keep as far as role players, we already lost Meeks because the lakers are putting all their eggs in one basket (James, Carmelo), probably next to go will be J. Hill because the Lakers are completely ignoring their role players, so if they do sign James and/or Melo who in the hell will we have for our 2nd unit, more new scrubs again, I agree with you, the Lakers need to be more aggressive with the role players before it’s to late because other teams will come after them.

      • Chrmngblly

And the rest of us are going to start smoking that stuff pretty soon, too.

  • Dan

2014 Lakers whiff,2015 Lakers whiff,2016 Lakers whiff fast forward 2030 Lakers whiiff.Jim Buss his batting 0-199 the man sucks as a owner and he is a big dope.

    • vdogg

why don’t you head over the the clippers bandwagon? seems like it will take you where you want to go.

      • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

you deserve 10 ups from me just by saying that….

        • vdogg

thanks. never understood why people come here to post gloom and doom as if they can tell the future.

  • BULL

OK OK I see you Jeanie… being more involved! I like that..

  • 3339

Interesting, but I think Melo is gonna stay east.

    • BULL

if he smart he should! Bulls or stay with Knickelbukers

  • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

This is the Lakers… and he’s got a home in LA, and his wife works in LA and loves LA… I think we are the front runner for his services along with the Knicks… Gasol-Randle-Melo-Kobe-PG … that’s one hell of a team.

    • vdogg

having randle as a selling point is absolutely huge. I’m staring to forget the d’antoni era already.

      • vdogg

        starting*

    • comrade24

We REALLY have to find a way to rid ourselves of Nash’s contract. We need the cap space to build a team around.

      • Zimmeredge

Stretch or ditch him with Kelly and Marshall in the process. We wońt use randle as a buffer. How stupid we are to present this young guy to the media, saying randle is our future blahblah and then week after trading him for draft pick absolutely stupid. Package him with Kelly a first rounder and it will sweeten the deal.

    • rival almighty

Yea but his wife taste like cheerios Kobe loves cheerios

    • 3339

that would be a very exciting team. things will get interesting next few days, especially with the meeting.

    • DKWTTY

      Yeah not much defense though.

      • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

Really? Defense is always a team effort… it helps if there are defensive minded players on your team, but it doesn’t follow that there will be no defense with this kind of team…. your offense always dictates your defense….

        • DKWTTY

You’re right but just looking at that-Kobe is old and doesn’t or can’t put much effort into defense anymore. Melo loves to shoot and doesn’t really like to play defense even though he has the size and strength to. Randle will be a rookie and isn’t defensive threat and we all know Pau isn’t either. Maybe if they all band together though and agree to put some effort into it, along with the right coach it could work I guess.

          • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

I think the question is not “maybe”, but “when they do get it”… team defensive principles cannot grow on a team overnight… it’s a process that needs everybody involve to buy into… I think, that is the biggest hurdle, not that one guy can’t or can defend. Kobe may not be the elite defender he once use to be, but he can still defend better than most in his position.

  • vdogg

melo as a laker, as kobe’s teammate, in hollywood… that guy will make more money and improve his personal brand by leaps and bounds over any other possible location, including new york. plus you can give him a say in the coaching hire… bring back a hopefully rejuvenated pau and form and awesome front court along with stud rookie PF randle.. the lakers make a lot of sense.

  • ResignCorona

i would love lakers to bring in kevin love and lebron !!!

    • dayton

Who wouldn’t but love going to warriors eventually in a trade. Lebron can’t handle a cramp can’t handle the west. Period! MELO KOBE duo here they come!

  • Jan Rey

Isnt it awkward that Jeannie’s trying to “steal” melo from fiance Phil?

  • Eazy

Funny how people want to blame Jeanie when *EVERYONE* knows that Jim Buss is the idiot of the family…

  • rival almighty

I’ll tell you what zimmer if it was up to Jeanie, Phil would still be here Howard would still be here shit maybe even chick hearn would still be here!

    • Zimmeredge

That’s the problem about jeanie she might be too sentimental in a business world. Remember that i have no particular grudges except the dwight banner thing. If she can pull the strings and land melo on her own i’ll cheer her up. But i guess Mitch, Kobe, Pau and Jim are more important. Also the coach.

  • jay

The Rockets nor the Bulls are hungry to win a championship like Kobe Bean Bryant is.

  • rival almighty

Look melo we all know very well the we are the reason you’ve never been to the finals. You couldn’t beat us so join us!

  • DKWTTY

Love it. Jeanie is the boss and said she’s going to be making some big time boss decisions now. Hopefully it works. Melo’s one of my faves and seeing him and Kobe on one team would be amazing.

  • wardrobe99

well i hope by thursday all the 2 tier players are not taken we need to go get some players we have a chance on melo but is it worth missing out on others and he declines our offer pistons going after all our talent and making meetings with people we need to have meetings with

  • Spade

Jeanie must be felling the pressure if she’s going to involve herself in pitch meetings. She knows how critical this summer is to the future of the franchise.

  • LAK3R4LIF3

I hope they don’t use Banners again & if they do……might as well change the “HOLLYWOOD” sign to “MELOWOOD” that’ll get it done for sure. LoL

  • sign sum deals lakers

Come on lakers! These free agents are dropping like flies!

  • laker4life

Bring Melo in. Have a mil in cash on the table surrounded by all the Championship trophies. Dump a bag full of rings for on the table and tell Melo, ” Here is the first payment, 19 more to follow. You’ll be a HOFer with other teams a legend with us. We are a global brand and you’ll be too.” And hope Phil gets sick when it’s his turn to pitch.

    • iEATcelticBabies

man, should be working in the laker front office

  • nash gots to go

So, it’s been reported that Derrick Rose had a private workout to show Carmelo.

How about some one on one Kobe vs. Carmelo to show him Kobe’s still got game?

How about the fucker Steve Nash show up to the meeting thursday to at least work his lazy ass out too? Shit for $9M, if you can’t play at least spend 15 minutes to work out for Carmelo, you lazy ass bum (Nash).

  • Daniel

Forget about Melo, another overrated egomaniac. If he were that good, he would have carried the Knicks. Plays just when he wants. He does not want to come to LA, because he wants to be the star, and he is not willing to work for it. He know Kobe will be in his ass about that, and they will clash about that.

  • Hugh

Mitch Kupchak is the one to blame his job is riding on this 2014 free agency. It’s now or never for Mitch Kupchak to bring the Lakers back to relevance and it is not looking good so far as the GM Mitch Kupchak is laying a big fat goose egg in the hottest free agency bonanza ever.Mitch has the cap space and the resources and the prime location Los Angeles,California and the deep pockets of the Buss family also the legacy and allure of the Lakers championship legendary tradition and culture, yet he can’t deliver a guarantee from a Superstar free agent yeah that’s a bad GM in the terms he can’t deliver when it matters most in a hot free agency.

  • Keith

The stage is set Gemini Mitch make you’re move on Gemini Carmelo.Gemini twins.

  • LegendInMyMind

Priority number 1 this offseason should be Pau Gasol. It’s not, obviously, and LA will wind up with nothing to show for it, unfortunately. I just LOVE the notion that he’s ‘washed up’, though. That and the whole ‘Swaggy P is a priority free agent’ thing just “brighten” my day…

    • keenanjen

That is one of their priorities. It’s only been one day. Let them work lol

      • LegendInMyMind

I’m not basing this off of the small sample size that is one single day. I’m looking at the past 3 years of undervaluing his contributions and importance to the team. Their words have been pretty hollow in comparison to their actions over that time. I simply don’t believe them. They want to ‘make a splash’, but every team needs a foundation. Look at the Heat. Even with the best player in the world in his prime, they still get beaten by teams like Dallas and San Antonio. What do they have in common? Loyalty to their “team guys”. Chemistry and teamwork beats a circus act any day all day.

        • keenanjen

The Heat only had one player signed when the big three signed together. That player was Mario. They started feeling out their roster, they resigned players and got some players. They only had one player signed because 1. They wanted to make a splash 2. They needed to figure how to get the three sign, and 3 they needed to see who would fit around them. They did have a coach in place we all know who that was. That’s my only problem with this whole thing. Hire a coach so players can see how they fit the system.

    • vdogg

why gasol? i mean i respect what he has done, but he can’t play defense anymore. if we don’t get melo or james — and it’s looking that way — we should just hire hollins and sign good (not superstar) young players and have that great defensive mind ‘coach ‘em up’. play for a FA coup the next offseason. i’d hate to let guys like henry, hill and bazemore get away because we are waiting for melo to get back from his dinner date with joakim noah.

      • LegendInMyMind

Carmelo doesn’t play defense. Pau can play defense, actually. He has the length to bother shots. He’s a better defensive asset than Carmelo Anthony. Not the scorer, but as we have seen, scoring isn’t everything. A 2 year deal at $10M-$12M per with a no trade clause (as incentive to rejoin this team at this point) would be more than fair for his value and importance to the team. You’re gonna have a better +- with Pau Gasol than Jordan Hill, who would be a decent choice for a significant contribution off the bench, in the starting lineup.

I think they need to save their money, take a similar approach that they took last offseason, and make a run at Kevin Love next year. You’re paying Kobe $24M in each of the next two seasons. Live with it and build around him. That starts with Pau Gasol, one of the best in the league at keeping a tightly run offense going and an integral part of team chemistry and leadership. Everyone seems to be dogging on Julius Randle’s lack of production defensively, but he has a 7′ wingspan and excellent athleticism. He and Pau could feasibly make for an effective defensive tandem with the right tempo, effort, and scheme.

  • kiko

first priority bosh and lbj and carmelo anthony and wade then second head coach LA Lakers

    • BULL

stop wishing please… Lance, Ariza or Deng

  • Lakers4Life

Wonderful to see Jeanie getting involved.
Now all we need is to free up more cap space by getting rid of mediocre Randle along with Nash. Then we’ll be ready for some kick arse this summer in free agency!

    • give randle a chance

Woah woah woahhh….. the kid didnt even have his first game yet. Give randle a chance.

  • darjoz79

    lowry,kobe,melo ,randle,pau
bench: marschall, ariza ,henry, bazemore, sacre, clark and one big guy

    • rival

I would look at Thomas and bledsoe before Lowry and I doubt we can get both melo and ariza

      • BULL

why would we try and get two players that play the exact same position? Ariza is the man.. if we continue to wait for Melo, every one is going to be gone

    • comrade24

No way Melo signs for less than max if he signs with LA IMO. won’t be able to afford Lowry at that point. Teams are willing to overpay for him right now. Ariza won’t be so cheap either, and definitely won’t come back to come off the bench and for lesser money.

    • BULL

Lowry is heading to Houston or staying in Toronto… What I seen is Lance do not like the contract Indi presented to him.. Come to L.A hes worth it

  • iEATcelticBabies

if we could acquire lebron , melo or love, im sure kobe would restructure his contract, and help usher in the next era of greatness in L.A

    • Spade

According to the CBA Kobe can’t restructure he’s contract. And even if he could, I doubt he would restructure. If securing the Lakers future was that important to him he would have taken less to begin with.

  • Chrmngblly

I hope Jeanie gets some balls and shit-cans her pothead brother. She needs to leave her little-girl charm kit in the bedroom and put on her cape and become the Lakers’ “Dragon Lady.” Do we need a phone booth for her to change in?

  • independentbynature

Melo just told the Rockets today that his priority is not money but to win.How many of you think that makes this years Lakers his best choice? Time to put down the crack pipe and get back to reality.

    • Kobe fan

Of course he’s going to tell them that. Why would he say he wants money and then they let media know he about the money. That him covering his ass in the public relations department. You need to read kenny anderson @chibbs_1 tweets about him not being impressed with bulls offer and him wanting MAX contract

      • Kobe fan

People need to put down the crack pipe and stop thing he’s goint to take $15 mill to maybe win in these other cities. He’s a MAX player and deserves something close to the MAX period.

  • Richard

The Lakers management and GM must be on point at the top of their game when they make their pitch to Camelo. Whether James comes to LA or not, and I don’t think he will, I like Camelo above all of the other free agents. He is a scoring machine and the perfect fit for the Lakers right now. I see their job to bring in the right talents and chemistry to surround him and Kobe made 100% easier. We know that is exactly what they will do. Build a championship team. Make it happen Lakers.

  • Shane

Everyone i believe is way off on this carmelo thing. The bulls look good on paper but they are not a lock to win a championship. Im not a player but injuries, luck, and alot of other factors have to go right to win a championship and thats not guaranteed in CHI, HOU, or DAL. Why would someone take that less money for a possiblility. ESPN and all these other people act like he’s locked in for a ring if he signs with a more loaded team. LA and NY are’t winning next year but both have the money to get LOVE, or LEBRON or whoever is available next year so its pretty much the same positon with NY having the slight advantage. Stephen a smith reported around allstar break that it was LA or NY. Then end of season MIA or NY. Carmelo has a home in la and ny and they can offer him the most. People act like he dont have bills who dont want to get paid when you have a family that dont mean he dont want a ring. LA has always figured it out 16 CHAMPIONSHIPS.

  • Shane

Man there’s a lot of Laker hate on ESPN.

  • Laker4Life

First Take – Lakers will get LeBron or Carmelo in 2014
If Carmelo signs with LA remember stephen a smith called it first.
