Lakers News: Dwight Howard Opens Up About His Relationship With Kobe

By | March 10, 2013|

dwight-howard-kobe-bryantAccording to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN Los Angeles, Dwight Howard maintains that he and Kobe Bryant have always had a solid relationship, but–contrary to public belief–it’s actually grown this season.

Apparently, it has strengthened following the All-Star break as Howard confided in Bryant about one of his fears:

“I told him [Bryant]: ‘I’m afraid to miss. When I get out there, I don’t want to miss, and I end up missing.’ And he was like: ‘You know what? Shoot 1,000 jumpshots a day. You’re going to miss a lot of those shots. But that’s OK. Because you’re teaching yourself it’s OK to miss.”

“Now I see it. He gets out there and he might miss a couple 3s, but then he’ll make nine in a row. You see that and it just kind of gives you more inspiration.”

Certainly watching Kobe drain three clutch three-pointers on Friday night against the Toronto Raptors much have been even more inspiring.

Howard also admitted that when he first came to Los Angeles, he tried to be someone he’s not by shutting everyone out and not talking to anybody. However, at the All-Star break, he thought long and hard about it and decided that he needed to go back to being himself and mature as a person in order to pursue winning a championship:

“I thought about it and said, ‘No, I can’t change. I’ve got to mature in certain areas,’ and I think I have. But I can’t change who I am.”

When did that change take place?

“At the All-Star break. I just thought about what we’re trying to accomplish as a team and I really want to win a championship. That’s the reason why I’m in LA.”

Additionally, Howard says he’s learned a lot from playing with Kobe Bryant as well; especially with regards to playing on a team with such high expectations and high stakes:

“It’s going to make me a better man and a better player from watching Kobe.”

Playing in Los Angeles, for a franchise with expectations as high as the Lakers, is “a lot different,” Howard said.

“Besides just the expectations, in games, I mess up and there’s somebody in the crowd saying something and I’m ready to snap at ‘em. That’s not what we’re supposed to do.”

“But you look at a guy like Kobe and he doesn’t care about nothing but going out there and playing hard. That’s a lesson a lot of us have to learn — especially young guys.”

It’s definitely an encouraging sign to see that not only is Howard getting along with Bryant despite multiple reports early in the season, but that he’s truly taking notes on how one of the greatest player of all time carries himself.

Certainly, Howard will one day be a Hall-of-Famer, but playing alongside someone as passionate and truly incredible as Kobe Bryant should definitely improve the big man’s approach to the game in many areas.

I don’t know if I buy the whole ‘always had a solid relationship’ thing but hey, if it’s true, all the better. The Lakers have stopped the whining and complaining and are playing like a team. I hope they can continue to play well, not just to make the playoffs but go deep into the playoffs. With Dwight saying this, I wonder if he’s gonna stay in LA? I guess we’ll see.
    GO LAKERS!

The only way the Lakers will go far into the playoffs is if Jimmy Boy and Mitch get off their A## and finish upgrading the 2nd unit, having Blake run the 2nd unit is just not going to work, the guy refuses to shoot and the reason for that is because he can’t, he’s just a shell of his former self, plus he doesn’t have the speed to keep up with the younger PG, the Lakers have to commit some of that money they are holding onto and/or get rid of Blake, Duhon and Ebanks, it’s unbelieveable that the Lakers can’t package these 3 for 1 young PG that will help us in the remainder of the games and in the playoffs, hell why didn’t the Lakers go after Nate Robinson when he was available, he’s everthing that Steve Blake should be, plus. Damn it, Ramon Sessions was sitting in obscurity at Cleveland, I can’t believe Mitch can’t find another Ramon Sessions. When is the FO going to face reality that they can’t beat the elite teams without at least one healthy speedy PG that can play (shoot, pass, penetrate, defend), they just gave up looking and when the Lakers find themselves looking at the finals from their livingrooms, maybe they should give Mitch a call and suggest he resign, along with Jimmy Boy, please Buss family realize that you have a couple of retards running the Lakers (Jimmy Boy and Mitch), get rid of both of them before the destroy the Laker Legacy, give the helm to Jeannie and bring PJ in as the GM and create a position for J. West and rebuild the Lakers into the team that they should be, you have a few good pieces coming back (Kobe, Nash, Howard, Clark, J. Hill, Gasol, move MWP to the 2nd unit, pickup Aldridge if possible, keep Meeks and AJ and the rest can be dumped and replaced with talented young BB players.

the lakers already have a team that is championship quality and they are going to shock the world when they win the CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR!!!

        • marco

also, Howard, & anyone else with good sense, realistically, does not want out of l.a., there’s no place like l.a., excellent weather, moviestar fans & a host of championship banners. besides, the players don’t have to be great friends to win. shaq & kobe weren’t, but won several championships together.

Dwight better take advantage of this opportunity of learning from a legend like kobe.

I would be shocked if Howard left LA. I don’t see him going to any of the teams who have the cap space to afford him. Think he’ll be a Laker for the foreseeable future.

  • honestly

dwight really is a drama queen… all i read was shit about his feelings and emotions… dwight u attention whore!!!!

Dwight needs to just cut out everything else and worry about his team and winning that championship.. I believe if Dwight can just do Dwight like hes been doing years prior he can maybe be the best center EVER!!
