Lakers News: D’Antoni Unsure How Many Players Will Make Final Roster

With so many new pieces added to the team on non-guaranteed or partially guaranteed contracts, the battles for the last couple of roster spots on the Lakers has been very interesting to watch. After releasing Darius Johnson-Odom while in China, the Lakers are down to 16 players on the roster and have to get rid of at least one more before the season starts.

However, the Lakers may not stop there. Our own Lakers Nation Reporter Serena Winters says that the Lakers might not carry the maximum number of players on the opening night roster:

Marcus Landry, Ryan Kelly, Elias Harris, and Xavier Henry are all fighting for the last couple of roster spots, so if the Lakers decide to only have 14 on the roster, it lessens the chance even more of one of these guys making the team.

Kelly, as a second round draft pick, is one of those on a non-guaranteed deal. He is fighting for his roster spot, and he knows it:

One of them has to go, but no one knows who that guy will be as of now. But with the possibility of an additional player being cut as well, look for all of these guys to play like their job is on the line, because it is.

Wow…If the Lakers do end up only carrying 14 (instead of 15) it’s going to be a very hard decision as to which two get cut between Marcus Landry, Ryan Kelly, Elias Harris, and Xavier Henry. I GOTTA think Henry is safe no matter what…he is literally one of only 3 guys on the entire Lakers roster (besides Kobe and Nick Young) who can create his own shot. So, that leaves Landry, and the rookies Kelly & Harris competing for potentially just one spot…tough call…

S Williams will make the roster along with X Henry who’s earned a spot as the coach has somewhat mentioned. That makes 13 players.

cut landry, the guy could not have performed worse, I understand first game jitters, I played college ball, but this has been every single game, lakers should cut him and carry the 15 man roster.

I can’t see them not keeping 15 this season, Especially given the uncertainty of when Kobe will be back coupled with the need to limit both Nash and Pau’s minutes.

Fourteen players is a strong possibility along with someone being sent to the D league. Told you Daryl…14! However, given the coach is unsure they may go 13…? Although, this should motivate the three players who’d stand on making the last(s) roster.

13?!? With the injury plight of this team, come on JIm. I know you gone hate it when I’m right, 15. LOL That’s the contemplation MDA is dealing with. The FO is likely on the traditional 14 thing but the Kobe theme changes that. It will likely be 14 after the trade deadline to help ease the luxury tax burden but no way in hell they can afford a thin 13 man roster!

“I do not have a sense of it,” D’Antoni said after practice Monday. “No.”

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said prior to training camp that it is a possibility the team may carry a full boat.

“In years past, it would probably be a lot tougher to justify keeping 14 or 15,” Kupchak said. “I think ownership would be more open to it this year than they would in years past.”

Henry has impressed. He should be a lock. Out of these players he’s the only one I see making a serious contribution to the team this season. If the other guys make it, they probably don’t see the court.
One thing that is really concerning is that I think the Lakers have been out rebounded in each game so far. Thats something they must address because that is a very critical part of games. Teams with athletic front courts are going to dominate us if we can’t fix the rebounding problem.

You would have to keep Kelly a bit longer on potential. Landry and Harris to go. Also gives longer to assess Henry before Kobe returns.
