Lakers News: D’Antoni Not Focused On Playoffs; One Game At A Time

With the Los Angeles Lakers currently on a two-game winning streak, head coach Mike D’Antoni has started to field questions about this team competing for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Following the win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, D’Antoni said the following about this team’s playoff chances according to Lakers Nation reporter Serena Winters:

Obviously, with only a total of three wins in the last 15 games, the Lakers competing in a highly competitive conference doesn’t seem likely. Although there’s a lot of basketball yet to be played and plenty of players still on the mend, including Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash, the Lakers have a long way to go before being included in the playoff conversation in the West.

Currently, the Lakers are sitting in 12th place in the West behind the Minnesota Timberwolves (19-21), Denver Nuggets (20-19) and Memphis Grizzlies (20-19) with a 16-25 record. The Phoenix Suns are in the eighth spot in the West with a record of 22-17.

Despite the fact that this team is still far from a playoff-caliber squad, the two consecutive wins on the road is a good sign that the team may finally be coming together.

Consistent play of Pau Gasol and the emergence of Kendall Marshall are signs that things are headed in the right direction for the Lakers. The four games left on the road trip will definitely test this team and their will to win as they will now jump on a plane to Chicago in order to face the Bulls on Monday night followed by the Miami Heat on Thursday in South Beach.

After facing LeBron James and company in Miami, the Lakers will take on the Orlando Magic (Jan. 24) and New York Knicks (Jan. 26) before heading back to Staples to face the Indiana Pacers on Jan. 28.

One game at a time is absolutely the right mind set. No tanking GO LAKERS

    • lakerfan0

      That’s what I’m talking about, let’s go!

    • e3bonz

Agreed, no tanking. Good game from Kelly, Nick and Pau. Lots of team playing today.

out of the next 4 gams only mia is above .500 and they arnt playing all that well right now. the lakers could go 6-1 or 5-2 during this road trip.

    • e3bonz

I mentioned at the beginning of this road trip that 5-2 was well within reach, but the Suns game didn’t happen. I’m now thinking more like 4-3. The last two games was like, keep it close until the last few minutes and then make a run and see. I’m not sure we can do that against Miami and the Pacers, if we get down by too many points in those games, it will be much harder to come back..

        the pacers are at home

        • e3bonz

Yup, my mistake. I think when I made my original assessment I was looking ten games out instead of the just the road trip. Taking that into consideration 5-2 is certainly possible.

  • Tankapalooza 2014

Tanking is a must to save the franchise from the hell hole they are in.Old aging injured superstar Kobe Bryant needs a replacement and this draft provides the Lakers with the chance to draft the next Kobe replacement. But the choice must be made to tank the season and end up in the top 3 of the 2014 NBA Draft.

These games are meaningless the team is not making the playoffs this season anyways.Forget about pride for a season and comeback reloaded next season with a top 3 pick and a healthy Kobe also a max free agent and contend for a championship. The draft coming up is said to be the best since 1984.

But some stubborn fans want to stump the growth of the franchise by winning now as opposed to waiting to win next season. The FO knows a tank job is needed and they will order it to happen by tonight.Lakers will lose to Chicago and the rest of the road games the tank will continue.Enjoy the wins for now.

Honestly i don’t understand the Suns logic in giving up on Kendall Marshall so fast? The Suns drafted Kendall Marshall with the 13th pick so they used a lottery pick on him and then 1 year later they trade him and their best center ever for a injured 31 year old guy with a surgically repaired neck and a pick?

Yes that makes no sense since Okafor won’t play for the Suns most likely, also Kendall Marshall had a breakout season with the Lakers and had Phoenix had waited they could have paired Kendall with Goran Dragic to form a unstoppable duo but instead they chose to trade their Point Guard of the future Kendall Marshall and their best Center ever Marcin Gortat for a 31 year old bum with a bad neck, where the hell is the logic in this?

I understand the fact they got a pick in the deal but it’s still a bad trade for the Suns any way you look at it.The fact of the matter is the Suns dumped a lottery pick after only one season only to see him land in the hands of their division rival the Lakers, now Kendall is having a breakout spectacular sophomore season in the NBA as the lead assists man in the NBA.

The Suns on the other hand just lost Eric Bledsoe for a couple months or more due to knee surgery yes they could use Kendall Marshall right about now.But Kendall is now with the Lakers and he is playing magnificent.Kendall Marshall should be selected to play in the Rising Stars game on All Star Weekend it’s a no brainer to select Kendall Marshall to participate in the Rising Stars game,he earned his spot already.Lakers got a steal they fleeced the Suns without needing to trade with them directly, they did by just signing their 2012 lottery pick.Yes the Lakers are much smarter than most people think. They get it done.

Yea it’s going to be tough for the Lakers to make the playoffs.Kobe is the hope!

  • OP_Albania

Just tank these stupid games and reload in the summer. This is meaningless.

Lakers can still make the playoffs if they go 29-12 for the rest of the season.45-37 got the Lakers the 7th spot last season.Should be a great upcoming few games.

    Go Lakers!Never Give Up Hope!
