Lakers News: Chris Kaman To Start In Place Of Ill Pau Gasol

After only playing a total of 17 minutes in the Lakers past 14 games, Chris Kaman will start tonight for the Lakers with Pau Gasol out with a respiratory issue, according to Bill Oram’s twitter account.

Gasol had been playing very well in the Lakers last five games, averaging just over 17 points and nine rebounds per game while shooting just under 60 percent during the stretch — which included a 21 point, 13 rebound night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Gasol is now added to what is seemingly an endless list of Lakers who will be out tonight with various ailments. Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Kobe Bryant will all not play tonight against the Golden State Warriors. Gasol will miss his first game of the season and was the only member of the Lakers to start every game this season.

Without Gasol, the Lakers will have to rotate the platoon of Kaman, Jordan Hill, Shawne Williams and Robert Sacre at the power forward and center positions.

Good opportunity for Kaman to argue his point for more minutes. Kaman, Hill, Sacre will need to out hustle the GSW on the boards to help pull off a win.

With Kaman starting alongside Hill, the Lakers should improve on one of the things that was getting them into trouble last night against Love, Pekovic and the Wolves – defensive rebounding…or the lack thereof. Yes, they’ll miss Gasol’s offense against the Warriors, but there is plenty of scoring in this free-flowing Lakers lineup – I’m much more concerned about rebounding, denying second-chance scoring opportunities to the opposition, and taking better care of the basketball.

He had something like this earlier this year, although he played, he wasn’t very productive.
