Lakers News: Chad Ford Sees Lakers Taking Embiid With Top Pick

Melvin Ejim, Joel Embiid

This off-season will be one of the most crucial in Lakers history. With nearly the entire roster eligible for free agency and a likely lottery pick in one of the deepest drafts in NBA history, it is likely that we will see a lot of new faces on the Lakers next season.

This year’s NBA Draft is full of excellent prospects who could alter a franchise and one of those is Kansas center Joel Embiid. In a recent chat on ESPN.com, draft analyst Chad Ford spoke about the likelihood that the Lakers would take him if they were to receive the top pick in the draft:

I think the Jazz and Celtics have Jabari Parker rated ahead of him right now.  The Magic and Sixers have Andrew Wiggins rated ahead of him. I think the Bucks, Kings, Cavs, Lakers would all go Embiid. I could see the Celtics, Sixers and Magic switching to Embiid by June. Think Jazz would stick with Parker.

With the team unlikely to retain Pau Gasol after the season, taking Embiid would make a lot of sense. He is an extremely raw prospect who has only been playing basketball for four years, but the skills he has already developed in that timeframe are amazing. In his last game against Iowa St., Embiid totaled 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks while shooting seven of eight from the field.

There is a lot of work to be done before the draft takes place in June. We have no clue where the Lakers will be selecting in the draft and things can change. With guys like Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker and Marcus Smart, the Lakers could have a lot of options come draft day.

Could be another Hasheem Thabeet. I’d still go Parker, Wiggins, Smart, and maybe even Exum over this guy.

    • CJsystem

this guy has moves and we can see flashes of it

We gonna get the next HAKEEM THE DEAM OULJIWAN…………..but we need a solid PG nowadays in the NBA u need a good PG to win

  • Raffaele D’Abrusco

The NBA has become a guard-driven league, and given the shortage of first rate guards available to move in the next two free agencies (barred Westbrook), should Lakers get a very high pick, I would definitely go for a backcourt player in the deep draft. With the like of Love, Monroe etc that should hit FA, it should not be a problem to replenish the Lakers frontcourt with talent and youth via FA.

    • Jim213

Same can be said for the PG position which is the league’s strength position currently.

I like Embiid but if Monroe is available, Lakers should sign him and draft Dante Exum. I think he has the potential to become the next Kobe. The
best part, he can play either SG or PG (combo guard) which is good in case Kendall Marshall turns out to be our starting 5 (over Nash, Farmar or Blake).Only if Exum is taken and Embiid still available, then draft him.

I like Monroe but this Emiid kid will become an all-star center! Book it! his length is ridiculous. He’ll shape out to be a better BIG than Dwight for sure! Has hops, speed, post moves, and catches lobs easily. Im sold on this kid

Exum hasn’t even decided to enter the draft as he’s still deliberating about playing a few years in college. Although, he’s met with top agents recently.

My wish list is simple to put on paper, hard to do. Pau Gasol goes to play along side his brother….That starts it…. Now Zack Randolph can go to Min & Love goes to the Lakers, OR Zack goes to the Pistons & then Monroe goes to the Lakers.. Next Blake goes to Golden State & they send us Harrison Barnes or we send Blake & Johnson to the Cav’s for Waiters….
Having said the above, the Lakers would be in a much better place to decide on their first round pick. (Now there is a chance, only a small one that Kendall Marshall could end up a first rate top point if he can learn to shoot & defined a little better, OTHERWISE they DESPERATELY NEED a true POINT… Sadly they also need a full 5 starters as well. 2015 will see a true group of great players become free agents…

THIS SUMMER THE LAKERS SHOULD GO AFTER IN FREE AGENCY HAWES/ARIZA/LOWRY AND RESIGN HILL/JOHNSON/MEEKS/YOUNG/HARRIS AND MARSHALL….HAVE NASH RETIRE….WORK A DEAL WITH MINNY PRIOR TO THE DRAFT THAT HAS THE LAKERS USING THEIR 1ST RD PICK ON WHO THE WOLVES WANT AND HAVE MINNY USE THEIR 2ND RD PICK ON MCADOO AND THEN WHEN FREE AGENCY STARTS DO A SIGN AND TRADE WITH THEM SENDING THEM GASOL AND THAT FIRST RD PLAYER FOR LOVE AND MCADOO…SO THEY CAN JOIN THE OTHERS MENTION ALONG WITH BRYANT/SACRES AND KELLY….
    HAWES/SACRES/KELLY
    LOVE/HILL/MCADOO
    ARIZA/JOHNSON/HARRIS
    BRYANT/YOUNG
    LOWRY/MARSHALL
THUSLY LEAVING THE LAKERS STILL 2 SPOTS OPEN FOR ANY OTHER CHEAP PLAYER IN FREE AGENCY THEY CARE TO ADD
BUT BY ADDING LOWRY THE LAKERS CAN USE HIM TO GET RONDO…
FURTHERMORE THIS LINEUP WORKS BEST WITH COACH D’UMBASS IF THEY DECIDE TO KEEP THAT LOSER ANOTHER SEASON AND IT HELPS DRAW BETTER COACHING AND BETTER PLAYERS IN 2015…
ITS A YOUNG ATHLETICALLY TOUGH TEAM WITH KOBE AS ITS ONLY STATESMAN FURTHERMORE IT HAS SIZE AND SPEED WHICH THEY SORELY NEED…..
PLUS IT COULD BECOME THE DEEPEST LAKER TEAM IN AGES THAT WONT COST MUCH AS LONG AS MITCH AND LITTLE JIMMY WORK IT CORRECTLY….

  • Brenny Ortega

Would love to this this kid on the LAKERS! His length is incredible! His D is on point. Blocks all day!

LAKERS should target: Wiggins, Emiid, Exuum,Hairston Jr.
Hairston Jr is in the D-League right now throwing down some monster dunks. His power and confidence level will make him transition nicely into the NBA.

    I can’t wait for this off-season.

You can re-sign Pau for 9mil. Where else you gonna get a nightly double double? Draft a point guard. Sign Deng for 9 mil. Keep Farmar, Young, Blake, HIll, Meeks at about 2 mil each, which would put us around 50 mil and the next year, when we’ve gotten rid of Nash, sign Love for about 15 mil. It’s the Lakers. They’ll always be tax payers.

    • urban

Yeah right like deng will sign for 9 mill lol

      • Gregory Gaylen

Deng isn’t all that, so 9m to don the Purple & Gold would be the greatest day of his life every time he wears the uniform.

        • thezstrap

he rejected 10 mil a year from chicago, where he wanted to be, so why would he take 9 mil a year? its been said that hes seeking like 14-15 mil a year

  • Cary Rumley

Too bad our scouting department is shit.

  • Dave Whitehead

    Umm, Julius Randle?

  • ico

why nobody gives any credits to wes johnson? he’s the only one with decent defense in the team, i see great future in his game, but people gotta believe in him and work with him hard to achieve something good, i believe it could be done in short amount of time! the guy has it all just needs good mentors. u all know what ppl say, defense wins championships, nobody playing any good def in LAL atm cept for him, give the dude some credit and stop trading him with every single news artical pops out

  • deandresims

Take the big, we still have Blake and Farmar to man the point. They can still pick up a PG through free agency. Maybe a Landry type guy.
