Lakers Nation Debate: Who Is On The Lakers Mount Rushmore?

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

Topic Of Debate: What four individuals have distinguished themselves enough to cement their place on the Lakers’ Mount Rushmore?

Context: There’s been a lot of hoopla after LeBron James listed the four players that he felt would be on the “Mount Rushmore” of great NBA players. So in line with the hype of that moment, we at Lakers Nation felt the need to discuss the people that we felt would be on that mountain.

Since the Lakers are a very historic franchise, we felt the need to not limit this debate to only players. There have been great coaches, executives, players, and announcers. Yes, it makes the discussion that much harder, but it also adds value to the debate.

Verdict: We took this poll question to Twitter to get the fans take on who they had on their Mount Rushmore.

I presented the poll question:

Here are some responses:

It’s important for us to first recognize what individuals have a case to be on this list. Of course, you have the legendary Lakers owner in the late Dr. Jerry Buss.  There’s a laundry list of players such as Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, and Shaquille O’Neal.

And there are also a few individuals that didn’t play, but left a historic mark nonetheless, such as Chick Hearn, Phil Jackson, and Pat Riley.

It’s difficult trying to cut this down to four, but I have to stay that I agree with the response from @ajstarting5.

I think that Dr. Jerry Buss is an automatic selection, as he was the architect in crafting this Lakers franchise to what currently is. He was the man that had the plan, and his vision is so still apparent despite the fact that he isn’t alive today.

Chick Hearn is also a man that deserves his place on the Lakers Mt. Rushmore. He was a key aspect of Lakers culture for decades, as his talent of calling  games live on air was something that fans loved. True Lakers fans understand how important Chick was to this franchise.

Phil Jackson is the greatest coach in Lakers history, so it’s only right that he get some recognition. He’s contributions are often forgotten in the grand scheme, but he played a very big role in seven trips to the NBA Finals, and five championships.

It’s difficult picking one player to be represented on the Lakers’ Mount Rushmore, but if we had to narrow it down to two, those players would be Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant. Ultimately I think Kobe should be the player represented. He’s been a Laker longer than any player in the franchises history, and is going to hold the majority of the individual records. I wouldn’t be opposed to Magic receiving this recognition, but I’d go with Kobe.

So in the end, we have Dr. Buss, Kobe, Chick, and Phil. That’s the Lakers Mt. Rushmore.

Any disagreements? If so, comment on who you think should be on this list.

Kobe, Magic, Kareem, and Dr. Buss, No offense meant to the Zen master, but he won 6 championships before he ever graced us with his presence. It’s hard to leave Baylor, Worthy, Chick, Mikan, West and so many others off, but the Lakers are a great franchise, just one fans opinion.

    • Jim213

What may have started the conversation.

  • FrenchMamba

    Kobe,Magic,West,Buss.

West because he was one of the best who played for LA and also do good job as a GM bringing in LA Shaq and Kobe.

Phil is like comrade24 says not only a LA legend and i see him on the Bulls’s Mt Rushmore.

Long hesitation between Kareem and Buss. If Kareem used to play all is carreer in LA i will choose him.

    • Al Haldie

Buss then West ,,, from here its wide open…

  • LakersHeatBeef

    Magic Johnson

    Kobe Bryant

Shaq 3 time finals mvp,3 peat first ever in LA.Season MVP.Most dominant force.Biggest and best free agent acquired in team history.

    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

  • gm jack

    Post 1980:

    1. Magic

    2. Kobe

    3. Shaq

    4. Kareem

    5 James Worthy

  • gm jack

I see Kobe’s ahead of Magic by some, but, the resume is not there to support.

Magic 9 finals. (did not play in one of the finals due to injuries)

    3 Loses in the finals

76 ers with Malone and Dr.J

    Celtics Bird and the Company

    Bulls Jordan and the Company

    Wins

    76rs with Dr. J
    Celtics Bird and the Company
    Pistons Bad Boys with Thomas

Magic Won against the All time greats and Lost to the All time greats.

Kobe did win 5 rings, but none of those teams would be in the annals of all time greats for the Wins or the Loses.

I respect those who put Kobe ahead of Magic but…

  • ghost

Magic as a player easily, Buss, Phil.

  • Big C

    West/Kobe/Magic/Chick

    • gm jack

Did you see West Play? Or Anyone who is picking West or any players pre 1980 or is just reading history books.

      • cma

In that case my Mt. Rushmore would be limited to Kobe, Gasol, Phil & Dwight Howard… Comon’. I never saw Jordan play in real time. That means I can’t appreciate his greatness?

      • Kenneth Simkins

I saw him play his whole career and he was one of the best defensive players and clutch shooters of all time! He was an all around great player!

  • Johnny

Chamberlian has to be on this list. Magic, Wilt, Kareem and either Baylor or West. Please stop with this Kobe crap.

    • realist

The Mamba. Holds the most Laker records. I’d put Wilt on his 100 point team. Stop with this anti Kobe crap

    • Joseph Apohen

      Kobe crap;?!

    • gm jack

Wilt won one. Shaq won 3 peat 3 MVP finals. Shaq is snot getting the due credit.

  • jwickabdurrahim

Magic, Kobe, Shaq, Kareem for a players only Rushmore

  • Hobbit

    Kobe, Magic, Kareem, and Wilt

  • CoolAmI

Some teams simply deserve more than one mountain. But if I’m stuck with only 4 I’m going with players only. And I pick Kareem, Magic, Kobe, West. Boom!

  • Dorian Holden

For me I have to go Dr. Buss, Magic, Kobe, Chick. I just feel you have to go with two players. And Dr. Buss and Chick are givens! Plus all of these people were Lakers for life. Very tough not to include Jerry West!

    • Joseph Apohen

Very difficult to include only four. No one has even mentioned Pat Riley. Remember he is the one that started the “Showtime”.And Chick, I think he was responsible for making the Lakers a household name with all his “Chickism”.

      • gm jack

Magic Started the Showtime. Pat Riley has proven to be a better GM with the Heat. The best Since Jerry West.

        • Joseph Apohen

Magic executed Riles offense which suited Magic’s style which he used when he was at MSU.

  • Mcado

Phile only coached the Lakers he’s not a trueLAKER; He’s not. He’s hates the fans, he hates LA, he hates Kobe and he hates Jerry West. So who ever, wants Phil to be in this conversation should re-think who Jackson really is.

A Self adsorb Zen. That’s all. Jackson loves NY. period.

  • Mcado

    Jerry West the GM
    Magic for Showtime
    Riley for the guarantee
    Kobe the “Black Mama”
Chick for the “Mustards off the hotdog..”
    Kareem the GOAT
    Jerry Buss for the Vision
    Jack for being Mr. Kool
    Diane for Ms. Consistent

This is Hollywood man. For there’s no limit to how many people can be on my mountain.

  • LAfire

Honestly I cant put Jerry Buss, yes he was a great owner but the Lakers were already the 2nd best franchise in the NBA when Jack Kent Cooke(also a great owner) sold the team to Buss. So my list would go:
    -Magic
    -Kareem
    -Kobe
    -Shaq

  • Kenneth Simkins

    West,Magic, Kobe and Chick Hearn
