Kevin Durant Says Kobe Bryant And Michael Jordan Are ‘Neck And Neck’

The Los Angeles Lakers take on the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight, just a few days after pulling out a victory against them on Sunday at Staples Center.

While MVP contender Kevin Durant has been available for the Thunder all season, the Lakers best player has played in just six games this season due to injuries, and has been ruled out for the remainder of this season. Kevin Durant recently reflected on Bryant’s skills.

According to Mark Medina of the LA Daily News, Durant had some high praise for Bryant and compared him to a former NBA superstar:

Of course. He’s the greatest of all time. His skill is second to none. Him and MJ are neck and neck as far as skill. You can put in athleticism and be the best passer and strongest and quickest. But it’s about skill. I think that’s how his game is played. That’s why Kobe is the top two best ever in just having skill, footwork, shooting the three, shooting the pull up, posting up, dunking on guys and ball handling. It’s flat out skill. Him and Jordan are 1 and 1 a. They’re neck and neck as far as the skills are concerned.

Many of today’s young NBA superstars grew up watching Bryant, rather than Jordan, and all respect the Laker guard very highly. While Bryant is pursuing his sixth NBA championship to tie Jordan, Bryant has been climbing the ranks of NBA history in points and other categories.

The two have often been compared, with Jordan usually getting a slight nod because of his extra championship. While it is tough to compare players from different eras, Bryant was always touted as the “next Michael Jordan” and has become the top player of his era.

Durant holds Bryant in high regard and shows the respect to him that Bryant has earned, considering Bryant a type of mentor.

Durant said it best. As far as offensive skills, they are “neck to neck”. Some may even say Kobe was a better offensive player. Some of Kobe’s shot had a drgree of difficulty that Jordan could not even match.

However, there is also the defensive component, rebounding, play-making, and the meta-factor, basketball IQ.

When you combine all 4 components, then, the majority will still put MJ at number one and the purist may choose Magic as he was the best all around player that could play at position 1 to 5.

And clearly Magic has no competition at his position of point guard, while the discussion MJ vs Kobe will rage on for decades at who is the ultimate of Boss of the shooting SG.

certainly a more versatile player but not necessarily a better offensive player as jordan was a better scorer.
but bodywise Dante Exum and Kobe Bryant are very close. both 6’6. Kobe was very thin when he was 17-18.

MJ might be overall a bit better (mainly due to edge in athleticism and defense) but Kobe for sure was the more skilled player. Kobe actually has more skill handling the ball (though MJs insane hands equalize this in effect) and passing than MJ and also pretty much has every single shot there is (insane degree of difficulty on his jumpers, teardrops/runners, hook with both hands, left handed 3s for cryin out loud!).

It takes a great star to recognize another and Durant might be the best in his era along with LBJ.

When Kobe scored those 81 points, he was phenomenal and unconcious, utterly unbelievable how someone could throw that ball anywhere and seemed to just find the hole. I have never seen anything like that and MJ was fanastic.

There will never be another Michael Jordan…EVER !

  • pcitty35

Kobe will never be Jordan he’s a great player that deserves to be mentioned when talking basketball but he’s not Jordan , Jordan was a trend setter and game changer with or without great players around him.

Pippen, Harper, Rodman, Grant, Cartwright, Paxon. Give Kobe that line up, he would also with 6 or more with Jackson at the bench. So,what gives. Kobe won in 2009 and 2010.That team was not nearly as good as Jordan’s team.

I’m a diehard Kobe fan and what @pcitty35:disqus is correct, Kobe is great best SG aside from MJ.

Top 10 player and arguably top 5 player of all time however MJ is better and as people said before Kobe might be better offensively (heck I don’t see anyone better than Kobe for now) however overall MJ would be better
