Many of James’ pundits claim that Bryant is still superior based on his unwillingness to lose, and the four championship rings sitting in his trophy case. However, other than the mental edge that Bryant has gained through experience James’ resume is almost as impressive. Other than the titles, which, to be fair, he hasn’t had the supporting cast needed to achieve yet, James puts up just as spectacular numbers as Bryant. Both Bryant and James have the same amount of MVP awards (1), and James has only one fewer scoring titles than Bryant in nearly half as many seasons in the league. Almost every scoring record Bryant has set James has surpassed, becoming the youngest player to every major point milestone he has reached. James has averaged over 7 assists a game the past two years to Bryant’s 4. These assists are on a team with far inferior talent than Bryant’s, so imagine what James could accomplish with established stars such as Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, and Ron Artest on his side. Also, James has taken his Cavaliers team to the NBA Finals once, and the Eastern Conference Finals twice with little more on his team than Bryant had in the 2005-06 and 06-07 seasons where Bryant failed to get his team out of the first round. James has proven that he can win with very little support, and if Los Angeles was to bring him in he would instantly be the center of a star-studded team in prime condition to win multiple championships.
Now certainly bringing in a superstar of LeBron James’ caliber is not easy, and is based on many extenuating circumstances. Would James even be interested in playing for the Lakers? Well, many of the things James has said to be seeking from potential suitors Los Angeles would be able to provide. It is one of the largest media markets in the league, and a team that is full of prestige and rich in tradition. James would be the toast of the town, and just a few blocks away from Hollywood where he could star in all the television commercials he wants to. Los Angeles could provide
LeBron James with everything he is seeking from a new NBA city, something that Cleveland, Miami, and even New York would be unable to supply. The truth is, Los Angeles is the best possible match for everything James claims to be seeking. If LeBron wants to become a global icon, Los Angeles is the perfect place for him to follow this dream.
The only thing seemingly in the way of the LeBron, Lakers marriage is Kobe Bryant. Bryant is an obstacle that may seem impossible to overcome, but in reality the decision is quite simple. Bryant’s contract expires at the end of the season, and for the last several years it was a question of whether Bryant wanted to come back to Los Angeles, but never if the Lakers wanted to bring him back. If Los Angeles would be able to sacrifice Bryant in order to bring in a younger, talented star such as James shouldn’t they jump on the chance? If the Lakers can make a simple trade, very similar to the Artest for Ariza swap they made last summer, they could bring in James without missing a beat. James could step onto the court and immediately provide the Lakers with the same level of excellence he has supplied Cleveland with for the past six seasons.
