That first round draft pick has not meant a whole lot for the Lakers of late
And look where that's got them. Outside of Bynum, they haven't developed any good, rotation players. So now that they need youth, speed, and athleticism, they don't have it.

teams are not gonna just give the Lakers quality players for essentially nothing. Understood that Johnny Flynn is not a hot PG commodity right now but he is 23 and averaged 13pts and 5 assists just 2 seasons ago. He is fast, energetic, and would be a vast improvement over what the Lakers have right now. The Lakers are old and slow with no PG, and cannot score 100 points to save their lives.
The problem is that Flynn isn't really a quality player at this point. His role will be to come off the bench, and I don't see him as being much of an upgrade over Goudelock and will probably get stuck behind both Fisher and Blake when he returns.
Plus, Flynn is a FA at the end of the year. Houston didn't pick up his option, so LA doesn't have birds on him and would need to use part or all of their MLE to keep him if he asks for more than a minimum deal. So to make him a long-term investment, LA would have to use up two assets to get and keep him. All for a guy who is not going to make LA that much better than they are now.
He's just not worth giving up a 1st round pick. LA could just sign him in the off-season if they really like him. Or if they want a real PG, keep the pick and use it on a guy like Marquis Teague or Tony Wroten. The worst thing LA can do is panic and give up an asset when they don't have many valuable trade chips to begin with.
