Lakers Rumors: Team Inquires About Jonny Flynn of Houston Rockets

Posted Image

According to Chris Broussard of ESPN the Los Angeles Lakers have contacted the Houston Rockets about their point guard Jonny Flynn. Broussard is also reporting that the New York Knicks have also asked Houston about Flynn, but that the Rockets aren’t interested in what the Knicks have to offer.

"Knicks & Lakers ask Rockets about Jonny Flynn, sources say. NY mentions RBalkman/MBibby.Hou not interested. Nothing imminent w/ either team."

I'd rather LA combine all their assets and deal for a real PG than make a small deal like this.

Flynn is a nice player, but not a starting PG, and definately not a pass-first PG. Ideally, he'd be a change-of-pace guard off the bench, but he won't solve LA's problem at guard.

Yuck….I’d rather just keep what the Lakers have then getting Johnny Flynn.

See what Jeremy Lin is doing in NY? He was out there looking for a job until the Knicks picked him up. I'm surprised that the Lakers didnt give him a look since they were "reportedly" looking to sign him when he was an undrafted rookie out of Harvard.

Who are the legitimate available PGs out there right now?

The Lakers need whatever they can get right now. I would take Flynn if he comes cheaply like for a 1st round pick. The Lakers are desperately needing some added speed, playmaking ability, and defense at the PG position.

If he was the answer to LA's woes I'd agree. But I don't think getting Flynn makes us instant contenders. LA doesn't have many valuable trade assets outside of Bynum or Gasol, might as well save the pick and get a major impact player. Role players like Flynn can be had via FA.

Jonny Flynn is garbage. He’s couldn’t win the job in Minnesota over Ramon Sessions or Luke Ridnour. He couldn’t win the starting job in Houston over Kyle Lowry or Dragic. He’s a little guy that has a scoring mentality more so than a playmaker. Getting him doesn’t improve the Lakers. I’d hold off until something better comes along. Like Ramon Sessions, Steve Nash, something else. Unless Houston will give him up for a 2nd round pick id save the 1st rounders they have for a better trade.

Same here, I'll take Sessions over Flynn.

That first round draft pick has not meant a whole lot for the Lakers of late and teams are not gonna just give the Lakers quality players for essentially nothing. Understood that Johnny Flynn is not a hot PG commodity right now but he is 23 and averaged 13pts and 5 assists just 2 seasons ago. He is fast, energetic, and would be a vast improvement over what the Lakers have right now. The Lakers are old and slow with no PG, and cannot score 100 points to save their lives.

And look where that's got them. Outside of Bynum, they haven't developed any good, rotation players. So now that they need youth, speed, and athleticism, they don't have it.

The problem is that Flynn isn't really a quality player at this point. His role will be to come off the bench, and I don't see him as being much of an upgrade over Goudelock and will probably get stuck behind both Fisher and Blake when he returns.

Plus, Flynn is a FA at the end of the year. Houston didn't pick up his option, so LA doesn't have birds on him and would need to use part or all of their MLE to keep him if he asks for more than a minimum deal. So to make him a long-term investment, LA would have to use up two assets to get and keep him. All for a guy who is not going to make LA that much better than they are now.

He's just not worth giving up a 1st round pick. LA could just sign him in the off-season if they really like him. Or if they want a real PG, keep the pick and use it on a guy like Marquis Teague or Tony Wroten. The worst thing LA can do is panic and give up an asset when they don't have many valuable trade chips to begin with.
