Gasol needs a Pau-er nap

05:52 PM PDT on Friday, March 13, 2009

By JEFF EISENBERG
The Press-Enterprise

Worn-out and weary-legged from clashing with two of the NBA's top big men on consecutive nights, Pau Gasol wanted only one thing when he returned from Texas in the wee hours of Friday morning.

"I'm looking forward to getting home and getting some rest," he said.

Gasol earned the right to relax after logging 41 minutes against San Antonio and 43 against Houston, scoring a combined 43 points and preventing Yao Ming and Tim Duncan from erupting offensively. Neither Yao nor Duncan met his scoring average against Gasol, with the mammoth Rockets center hitting seven of his first eight shots before disappearing in the second half, and the Spurs star posting a quiet 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting.

"You want to be the best? You've got to play against the best and beat them," Gasol said. "I'm competing really hard out there, but that's what it takes to come to places like Houston and San Antonio and win. Obviously my body's sore and my legs are tired, but I'm trying to do my job."

In the six weeks since Andrew Bynum went down, the Lakers have searched for ways to limit Gasol's minutes with minimal success. Chris Mihm failed to take advantage of his chance and got traded. The front office was unable to acquire a capable free agent big man. And while D.J. Mbenga has provided energy and interior presence in spurts, Coach Phil Jackson seems willing to play him only sparingly in tight games.

The remaining option is giving Gasol as much time to recover as possible between games. That's why Jackson identified getting Gasol some rest as his top priority Thursday night, when asked what he'd like to accomplish in the two days before the Lakers host Dallas on Sunday.

"Whether I'm tired or not is not a big deal to me," Gasol said. "I'm excited and I'm motivated to accomplish our goals. That's all that is on my mind."

M-V-P, M-V-P

Kobe Bryant explained to a San Antonio-area reporter Thursday night that winning back-to-back MVP trophies isn't nearly as important as leading his team to back-to-back NBA Finals.

"For me, it's just go out there and do my job and help us win games," Bryant said. "That's all I'm here for, is to help us win. If the MVP comes with that, man, that's great."

Still, the three-pronged MVP race between Bryant, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade is good enough theater that it dominated the conversation on TNT's show before Thursday's Spurs game.

"The MVP is LeBron James or Kobe Bryant," Charles Barkley said. "Dwyane is having a fabulous year, but you can't change the criteria. It'll be LeBron or Kobe because their teams will have better records. We reward winning."

Kenny Smith agreed, adding: "I would have to go with LeBron because I don't think he has as much talent as the Lakers have."

Ariza adjusting

Despite his initial reluctance to re-enter the starting lineup, Trevor Ariza admits the switch has been effective the past two games.

Ariza provided the starters a bolt of energy with his smothering first-quarter defense against the Spurs, making three steals and punishing San Antonio for playing off of him by hitting three wide-open jumpers.

Meanwhile, Luke Walton excelled in his new role off the bench, keying a fourth-quarter surge from the second unit by hustling for loose balls, setting up teammates for buckets and even converting a pair of driving layups.

"It's been better for both the second unit and the first unit," Ariza said. "They've played better and we've played better. It's working out."

laughing1.gif  laughing1.gif man that was funny! I read it twice and I LMAO just as hard the second time I read it. That`s right it is Vic I mean Javi that picks them to go undefeated. I know the Mavs. have no defense but I see another let down coming from the Lakers. Better now than in the playoffs coffee2.gif

No I am not vic! I am a Los Angeles faithful fan who expects and believes that they are going to win these games based on the depth, talent, and disadvantages we give other teams every night.
