ESPN’s Joe Schad reports that the Florida Gators  are one of five programs being accused of illegally contacting USC Trojans running back Dillon Baxter about a transfer.

Florida – along with Alabama, Oregon, Washington and Fresno State – allegedly reached out to Baxter (a true freshman) on June 10, according to USC. This potentially occurred one day before the NCAA announced that schools could recruit the Trojans’ juniors and seniors. Players wishing to leave will not have to sit out a year.

Baxter does not fall under these guidelines and told USC director of compliance Matt Billings about the illegal contact immediately; the Trojans have officially requested that the Pac-10 reach out to and speak with the accused parties.

“I just met with (Baxter) and he told me that he received phone calls from five institutions (June 10th),” Billings wrote to Pac-10 associate commissioner for governance and enforcement Ron Barker, according to ESPN. “All of the institutions asked if he was interested in transferring [from] USC due to the NCAA decision. Would you please speak with these schools to remind them they cannot speak to this student athlete?”

Gators associate athletics director for communications Steve McClain, Crimson Tide associate athletics director for football communications Jeff Purinton and Ducks head coach Chip Kelly have all denied the respective accusations.

The allegations, if determined to be true, would amount to secondary violations.

Derelict will have more on this breaking story as it is made available.

Somethings just never change :whistling: Another Florida Gator Football Player Arrested—What Else Is New?

A WR for the Florida Gators, was arrested early Sunday morning on DUI charges at the University of Florida campus.  It's been reported that Hammond was driving 45 mph in a 20 mph zone recklessly and with two open bottles of Crown Royal in his possession.

Yawn.  What else is new?

Seriously, what is going on with the Florida Gators?  One could argue that boys will be boys, and any college kid could get caught driving drunk.  Perhaps, but Coach Urban Meyer knows that his players must maintain a higher standard especially with the number of arrests that continue to rack up for the team.

The most recent DUI arrest happened one weekend prior to the 2009 SEC Championship game when then DE, Carlos Dunlap, was found slumped over the steering wheel around 3:00am.  Dunlap was suspended for the SEC Championship game but did return for the Sugar Bowl.

Hammond was reported to contribute significantly to the 2010 offense, and was to be a main target for QB John Brantley.  Now we must wait and see how Coach Meyer handles this situation.

Twenty-eight arrests and counting—will it ever end for the Florida Gators?

In response to Shalongest's post...

"Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer is looking to put an end to the seemingly never-ending black eyes being placed on his program with each subsequent arrest of a University of Florida football player. With 28 legal issues under his tenure to-date, Meyer and his coaches held an emergency meeting with the players on Monday, a source close to the team told OGGOA.

The coaching staff took turns verbally lambasting the team and letting it be known how, more than ever, accountability and responsibility were important to the program this off season. Then, as former Florida football player Brady Ackerman first disclosed via Twitter on Monday, they stressed that – from this point going forward – the team would be held accountable as a group for any individual missteps. As OGGOA’s source put it, the Gators are adopting an “if one falls, all fall” mentality that was taught in practical application immediately after the impassioned meeting.

Florida football misuses Facebook, commits four minor NCAA violations

GAINESVILLE — The Facebook walls of recruits have become big parties for NCAA rules confusion.

Even college coaches are bringing chips and dip.

In the last month, Southeastern Conference schools Florida and Ole Miss have faced secondary NCAA violations for coaches posting messages on a recruit's Facebook wall.

An opposing school turned the Florida football program into the SEC for improper use of Facebook as part of the program's four secondary NCAA violations committed in the last year, UF revealed in response to an open-records request from the Orlando Sentinel.

Sources: Florida, NCAA probe allegation

Florida and NCAA officials are investigating a potential rules violation that allegedly occurred last December involving former Gators football standout Maurkice Pouncey, sources said.

Florida is internally investigating what sources described as an allegation that a representative of an agent paid Pouncey $100,000 between the Gators' loss to Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game to Alabama and their season-ending Sugar Bowl victory over Cincinnati. Florida apprised the NCAA of the allegation after it became aware of it

Nate Montana, ND athletes arrested

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The son of former Notre Dame standout Joe Montana was among 11 Fighting Irish athletes arrested on misdemeanor charges of underage drinking at a party Friday night.

A total of 44 people were arrested after city police responded to a call about a fight near a roadway and discovered the party, said St. Joseph County Police assistant chief Bill Redman.

Two non-athletes face a misdemeanor charge of providing alcohol to minors. The arrests were handled by state excise police, who didn't immediately return a message seeking comment on Saturday.

The Notre Dame football guys are fucked because they got busted by excise police. Their sole responsibility is to bust underage drinkers. They all look like college students and go into parties and bars undercover looking for shit to bust.  And from past experiences from working at a bar for 5 years, they're usually dicks about it.

No, he has not yet been able to get the perfect contract. Actually he is getting all his marketing deals done before everyone finds out that he will suck as bad or worse than Chris Simms in the NFL.

Too busy making as much cash as he can because his career is basically going to be over before it starts. See Russell, Jamarcus. Jamarcus had more talent and could actually throw the ball much better than Tebow ever will be able to.

UF's Ahmad Black Wants to Make His Senior Year Memorable

As Florida senior safety Ahmad Black reflects on his last summer with Florida's football team, he can't help but erase his boyish smile.

Usually giggling and bright, Black gets serious when he talks about the work he's put in this off season.

"I've been through a lot," Black said. "This is probably one of the toughest (off seasons) we've had. We've got to get guys ready to play. There are a lot of shoes to fill, and we have to get guys ready so they can be physically and mentally prepared so they can get out there and play."

Maybe it's because this is his final season with the Gators. Maybe it's because he's truly endorsing his role as team captain.

Or maybe it's because of how Florida's national title hopes ended in Atlanta.

"It was really embarrassing," Black said of the 32-13 loss to Alabama in the 2009 SEC Championship. "We missed, like, 20-something tackles. That just wasn't Gator football."

Black will be called upon to lead even more this year because of his experience and the fact that Florida is equipped with a few new coaches, including the defensive coordinator.

New guy Teryl Austin brings his knowledge from the Arizona Cardinals to Gainesville. So far, Black has liked what his new coach has to offer.

"Coach Austin is my guy, right now," he said.

"He's growing on me."

He likes Austin's philosophies, but he's having to get used to his much more quiet approach to coaching. It's nothing like the powerfully noisy style of former defensive coordinator Charlie Strong.

"You can hear Strong during the play," Black joked.

Heading into two-a-days, Black said he's got a few things to work on to improve his game, but wouldn't really elaborate on what they were. That lovable smile came back momentarily when probed to say something, and he finally admitted that he can be a bit of a ball hog, which causes his technique to falter.

It's something he's noticed and it's definitely something he'll have to hear about from his coaches, who still rag on him despite his elderly status.

"I still take coaching, even though I'm the oldest one out there," he said, smile stretching from ear to ear.

The Urban Meyer who commanded the podium on Day One of SEC Media Days 2010 was different than in years past. This Urban Meyer was refreshed. He was relaxed. He was almost light hearted. He exuded subtle confidence. The kind of confidence that could make even an Alabama fan squirm.

Urban is feeling good because Florida doesn’t have a target on its back this year, right?

Wrong.

“I’d have to say the bulls-eye is pretty squarely on Florida’s back,” Coach Meyer said with a sly smile.

He is considered one of the greatest minds currently in college football. His success is well documented and, yet, he admitted his wisdom has shortcomings. The king of micromanagement is teaching himself to let go.

“I learned a lot this past six months and delegated more than I ever have,” Meyer said. “I’m very appreciative of our staff and the talented guys that I have.

“Everybody from Nancy, my executive assistant, to [offensive coordinator] Steve Addazio, to [defensive coordinator] Chuck Heater, to [linebackers coach] D.J. Durkin – I’m finding out the production just increases exponentially when you empower people and let them do their jobs. We have a terrific staff.”

It’s obvious that Coach Meyer has been stopping to smell the roses, but if you look closely, you may see a twinkle of vengeance in his eyes. Motivated from the loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship game last season, he used the word “ready” several times when referring to 2010. Then, Meyer nonchalantly said:

“Oh – I’m hoping I’m getting a very angry team. I like coaching angry teams.”

Meyer’s 2010 team consists of a good group of players who are buying into his system. He has expert help from a team of coaches he trusts. But, there are still questions in need of attention.

Who is the go-to receiver?

“Normally I have a good handle on who our top five or six play makers are,” Meyer said with as much certainty as he could muster. “We have five or six, but I just don’t know the order of touches that we’ll get involved with. How’s Andre Debose? How’s Deonte [Thompson]? How are all these young receivers that are coming along? That’s how we’ll formulate a game plan.”

Who will run the football without Tim Tebow?

“We aren’t going to change who we are dramatically … [Tebow] is not there and John [Brantley] is not a runner, so we’ll do a lot of the same things we did with Chris Leak when he was our quarterback,” Meyer said. “We’ll run some under-center stuff. We will direct snap to whoever that person may be and run some wildcat formations because we need that aspect of our game plan.”

Another question mark for the defending SEC East champs is who is stepping into the leadership roles on a team that has seen great turnover over the last few months.

“Well, on offense it’s Mike Pouncey right now,” Meyer said. “He’s clearly ahead of the game as far as a leadership role on offense. It’s either got to be the quarterback or an offensive line [and] we’ve been fortunate the last two years to have Tim [Tebow].”

On defense the leader of the pack isn’t quite so clear-cut. Meyer didn’t name a go-to guy on the other side of the ball, but it would appear that torch will be passed from All-American linebacker Brandon Spikes to senior DE Justin Trattou and senior safety Ahmad Black.

Those questions are just the tip of a large iceberg Meyer will chip away at all season. The difference in 2010: He won’t let the ice chip away at him.

His faith in those around him will melt doubts away, and he will relish in the joy of rebuilding.

He will develop powerful relationships with his newest recruiting class and focus on what he does best: Winning – “One game at a time.”
