Florida got a higher seed than Kentucky after losing to Kentucky in the SEC Tourney and not being a top ten team all year. Selection comittee, fail.

This. How much dick did Billy Boy suck to get a number 2 seed. Florida had no real quality wins playing in a mediocre conference at best. They got sqaushed by The Ohio State and lost 2 out of 3 to Kentucky. Yet teams like Arizona and Texas were seeded lower that Gators.

And they got a freaking Home game vs the Bruins ...Wack! ... IF they played on a neutral court, Bruins win ...

Yep. Not Howland's finest moments on the bench either along with a really bad non-call in the last couple of minutes. Go BYU.

Florida's Billy Donovan close to signing contract extension.

GAINESVILLE – Florida men's basketball coach Billy Donovan is close to signing a contract extension with the school that would keep him there through 2015-16.

The extension would take him through his 20th season at Florida, where he has built a 360-147 record. Donovan said he and athletic director Jeremy Foley have already agreed on the length of the extension and he expects to sign it soon.

"It's just a matter of me just signing and getting it done," Donovan said.

Donovan's current contract runs through the end of the 2012-13 season and pays him $3.5 million annually.

He pointed to his relationship with Foley as a rarity in being able to work together during his tenure at Florida. Heading into his 16th season, Donovan has been one of the most successful of Foley's hires since he took over as athletic director in 1992. Foley hired Donovan in 1996, and Donovan has won two national championships, four SEC championships and posted 13 consecutive 20-win seasons.

"I think in this day and age in coaching, it's very, very rare that you stay at a job, and this is the start of my 16th year, and you still have the same athletic director in place," said Donovan. "And I think it's been our relationship that's made this job and this opportunity of being here so special is my relationship with him. I would think that it would happen soon."

Florida at No. 10 in USA Today preseason top 25

The preseason USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll was announced Thursday with the North Carolina Tar Heels being slotted as the overwhelming No. 1 team in the country after receiving 30 of 31 first-place votes. North Carolina, which returns all five starters from 2010, is one spot ahead of the Kentucky Wildcats, which were not voted lower than No. 6 in any ballot submitted.

Four Southeastern Conference teams made the poll including Kentucky (No. 2), Vanderbilt (No. 7), the Florida Gators (No. 10) and Alabama (No. 17).

The 2010-11 Gators were ranked No. 11 heading into last season, which saw them win the SEC and end the year with a record of 29-8 (13-3 SEC) that included an appearance in the Elite Eight round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

The Southeastern Conference announced its coaches’ preseason All-SEC first and second team selections on Wednesday, and three Florida Gators were honored on the lists. Senior point guard Erving Walker and junior guard Kenny Boynton both earned first team nominations, while sophomore center Patric Young was the only UF representative placed on the second team. Walker and Boynton were both on the media’s All-SEC second team, and Young was left off.

Florida wins season opener in 40-point rout

Sophomore center Patric Young posted his first career double-double, and a duo of guards – junior Kenny Boynton and redshirt junior Mike Rosario – led Florida with 19 points each on 14-of-25 combined shooting (9-of-15 from downtown).

The Gators opened the game by outscoring the Tigers 18-3 in under five minutes and held a 59-23 lead at the half. Florida began the second half with a 15-0 run to take a game-high 51-point lead with nearly 17 minutes left to play.

Florida passed its first test of the young season but will have a much tougher opponent in their next game as they are set to face Ohio State on the road in Columbus, OH on Tuesday. The game will air live at 5 p.m. on ESPN2.

Gators ground Ospreys in 91-55 blowout

The game may not have started at the pace that No. 7/8 Florida Gators head coach Billy Donovan may have preferred, but his team pulled away early in the second half and cruised to an easy victory in a Global Sports Shootout game.

Florida (2-1) routed the North Florida Ospreys (1-2) 91-55 Thursday night at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville, FL behind a 20-point performance on 7-of-14 shooting by junior guard Kenny Boynton.

With No. 9 Florida Gators basketball set to travel to Syracuse, NY to take on the No. 3 Syracuse Orange Friday evening, head coach Billy Donovan met with the media to discuss what preparations have been made for his team’s next road game.

Donovan said Wednesday that Murphy could return as soon as the Arizona game after doctors figured out the “subtle and small” meniscus tear was from when he was a sophomore in high school.

“When you see a torn meniscus on the MRI, your initial reaction is that he’s going to need surgery. Waiting to get the other MRI from high school proved to be very helpful in making a decision for what he needs to do rehabbing to get himself back,
” he said.

One of the best venues for college basketball in the country, Syracuse’s Carrier Dome is always an interesting place to play. In addition to the fans being raucous and the atmosphere electric, the dome itself provides different site lines for shooters that sometimes can take some getting used to.

Hopefully the memories that I had in the Dome they don’t have. We never won at Providence when I was plying there in the Dome,” Donovan joked. “[Florida] did have some success there in the NCAA Tournament in 2000, which was great. They’ve got a great home court advantage. They’ve got a great environment. It’s a unique situation. I don’t know if there’s any other college program that plays in a dome setting like that. It’s a special environment. Our guys will enjoy it. It’s a different place to play, and I was fortunate 25 years ago to play there several times.

Rosario ready for his return to Rutgers

No. 10 Florida Gators basketball set to resume action with a road contest against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Thursday in its second-to-last game of 2011. Despite being declared “doubtful” last week and a person close to his family telling SNY.tv he was unlikely to play Thursday, redshirt junior guard Mike Rosario is expected to be back on the court against his former team, Donovan said on Wednesday.
