I just stumbled upon his profile by accident today. I went to high school with him and used to surf with him.

If the Manny Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight happened it would have produced a record PPV buy that MMA could never reach. They struggle now to get to close to 1 million for their big fights. Boxing has hit that number on a number of occassions. Look up the top PPV buys in history and they are dominated by recent boxing (and wrestling).
Maybe I’m wrong but I see this is a fringe sport that will remain in the outer rim of the mainstream sports world.

it already is mainstream and true, boxing has its fights that produce record ppv buys but overall the #'s for boxing don't even compare to mma and it's been like that for years. mma continously has high ppv #'s while boxing only has 1 or 2 a year to bail them out..

When I think mainstream i’m thinking those that are on Network TV and getting sufficient ratings to warrant them being on. It was only recently that ESPN and some newspapers even starting covering the sport.
Yes, I’m aware that boxing is dying and other than their big fights there is not much there.
While boxing is dying it will never die completely because there will always be those few that keep are attention on the sport like Pacquiao and Mayweather.
At least with Boxing there was a glorious heyday. What are MMA glory days? I know getting on Spike TV and 1 million PPV for one event isn’t it.
I don’t see us sitting around on ESPN classic one day watching MMA like we do boxing. I still hear people talking about Tyson, Oscar, Marvelous, Ali, etc.
I just see MMA being somewhere between the XFL and dirt bike racing.

I have no problem with it except when I hear things about how big it is or how big its going to be. It’s a fringe sport and will always be one.
Come to think of it I dont follow any fringe sports.

may 31st 2008, elite xc had a show on CBS when kimbo slice headlined it. if that's not mainstream, i don't know what is. if dana wasn't such a hard ass, there would be more mma on network tv.
every time mma is on the news, all i hear is how it's popularity and numbers surpassed boxing..
here is an article that i found on the web which sums it all up....
This boxing vs. MMA debate was relevant two years ago. MMA has passed boxing as the premier combat sport and there’s little question about it. There are too few great boxers left and boxing promotion is a joke.
Say what you will about the UFC and Fedor and everything but, for the most part, the UFC gives the fans fights they want to see. They put together exciting cards with big fights and they do it on a regular basis. Boxing can’t keep up and produce that consistently.
Take this debate out of the hands of boxing and MMA people. Ask a random Ravens fan which combat sport is more popular. Ask a baseball fan. Ask a college football fan. They will all say the UFC. You don’t even need to get into Spike’s TV ratings against the other major sports.
The boxing show could outdraw UFC 103 this weekend but it’s clear that the future is in the Octagon. It’s an ADD-society, one that responds more to the complexities and multitude of styles in MMA rather than the punch-punch-clinch style of boxing. MMA is simply the evolution of boxing.
I’m sure there will always be people who like boxing better. That’s fine. There are people that like horse racing more than the NFL but it’s clear which one is more important on the national stage.

That is obviously an MMA writer and doesnt change my position....I never said that MMA hasnt surpassed Boxing...of course it has.
But the only reason is because Boxing has fallen off dramatically allowing MMA to surpass...its the same as me beating up Muhammed Ali in the ring today and taking credit for Beating the Greatest of All Time...it is only cause he is old and sick that I beat him.
MMA will never...never reach the level of popularity of Boxing in its prime...it will never produce the big fights that Boxing has in the past or that they sometimes produce now...it will never, never reach the popularity of NBA, NFL, MLB, Nascar, NCAA football and basketball.
Number one combative sport? yes.
Mainstream sport? Heck No.
Fringe sport? Yes.
