Former Lakers GM Makes a Rumored Trade Offer for Dwight Howard

Can Dwight Save the Day?

As soon as Jerry West signed on with the Golden State Warriors, many fans of Lakers Nation naturally assumed he would try to throw some bones over to his old team. A couple of weeks ago it was the trade rumor for Monta Ellis that sent Lakers Nation into a frenzy, but it could have been smokes and mirrors as the latest rumors coming from NorCal (via ProBasketballTalk.com) are that the Warriors have made an offer for Dwight Howard.

The rumored trade would look something like this:

Orlando Magic would receive:

  • Monta Ellis
  • Andreis Biedrins
  • Ekpe Udoh

Golden State Warriors would receive:

  • Dwight Howard

The Warriors would instantly become a championship contender with a core group of Stephen Curry, David Lee and Dwight Howard. On the other hand, the Magic’s chances of making a run at the title, much less the playoffs, would pretty much go POOF!

The chances are extremely low that this trade happens as the Magic have already denied (via Hoopsvibe.com) that theses rumors are true. But as veteran NBA fans know, denials don’t really mean anything.

That would be the stupidest trade in history.  Why would you give up the top big man in the game for 1 all offense 2 guard, and two pieces that will not do squat?  Jerry worked magic (no pun intended) in the past but that is a stupid trade to even propose.

This trade is simply a ploy to entice other teams.  Orlando is smart enough to decline Golden State’s offer.  It’s obvious they need to acquire another big man with value for compensation.  Jerry West knows this.  Consider it a scrumptious piece of bait for all the fishes in the pond.  Now, the Lakers have movable pieces to complete a trade or ignite some discussions with Orlando for Howard.  They could package Bynum and LO (or Artest) and perhaps a couple of second round draft picks.  The Lakers have four this upcoming draft.  In my opinion, Jerry West will pull trigger the Lakers’ way like what he did with Memphis and Pau Gasol.

Let’s see what happens after the CBA meeting on Tuesday and the draft next week.

    Go Lakers!

Package 23 year old Andrew Bynum and either Lamar Odom or Ron Artest PLUS two draft picks????
Are you on crack?? What the Lakers need is a damned good point guard–a player who (unlike Derrick Fisher) can stay between his man and the basket and can execute a floor plan which emphasizes feeding the post. I mean, think about it: Most clubs in this pivot-poor league would KILL to have a 7 foot center with soft hands and natural low post scoring ability. The Lake Show has TWO of them, but for the past two seasons their dumb, selfish guards took turns ignoring BOTH of them. And to make matters worse, their erstwhile coach would–for reasons that still mystify me–sit Andrew Bynum down for long stretches of the second period and then sat him down for the last half of fourth quarters. But that’s a different discussion for a different day…With a TRUE point guard running things–someone who doesn’t have to be to be told and told and told and told and told to feed the pivot, the Lakers would be a thousand per cent better. As Stu Lantz says, your bigs play better on both sides of the ball if you involve them on offense–a habit that would seem to recommend itself since the Lakers are a mediocre perimeter shooting club at best. Just ask yourself if, instead of Moe, Larry and Shemp piloting the Lakers’ back court how good Los Angeles would be if they had a REAL lead guard like, say, Chris Paul, or Steve  Nash, or John Stockton or Earvin Johnson or Dave Bing or Walt Frazier, et al serving as an extension of their coach on the floor….The Lakers–as currently constituted–would very likely be a 65 win club and a perpetual championship contender. That approach would also extend Kobe Bryant’s career, although (perennial glory hound that he is, he doesn’t seem to understand that and, accordingly, doesn’t feed the post as often as he damned well should either…)

But hey, what the hell do I know?

Learn from Clifford! The Lakers are not running the triangle anymore You need a POINT guard!

          • Anonymous

You want to tear up the team for a point gaurd. You trade Gasol, Bynum goes down with his yearly injury the lakers will go nowhere who will be the center Lamar Odom?

lmao, he sat Drew to keep him healthy. you and margarite are one of a kind. Phil sat Drew to keep him healthy for the WHOLE season. If he had just played him the way you play Dwight or other durable big men then he would have broke down after game 30. Drew is not very durable, thats why they WILL trade him. like Adande and Bucher said when the rumor of melo was out there. they will keep drew because noone else has a andrew bynum to offer orlando for Howard. hopefully they get tha number 2 pick for gasol and they get their point guard there for cheap. id love it if they got kyrie some how. its a HUGE long shot, but you can always hope.

West was retired when the Lakers got Gasol. Gasol was a salary dump not a give away. The owner wanted to pocket the money. He came out alright Marc Gasol is a good player. The lakers got pau Gasol, Memphis got an Expiring contract and the owner saved over $30 million dollars. Good motivation
to make what may appear to be a one sided trade.

I totally agree; we don’t need Dwight Howard. Pau/Andrew are a much better combo, and it’s not like they’re bad players or anything. Sure Dwight would be a nice addition, but we shouldn’t have to give up so much to receive basically the same thing again. I agree with you all the way. What we need is a good PG who can handle the ball, drive to the hoop and get us easy layups, and pass the ball to Kobe/other shooters for quick points. :)

They may be a much better combo in your eyes but what we saw this playoff will not bring another title to Los Angeles. The Excuse they were tired from playing to much basketball, they are NBA players for goodness sakes. How about the truth, they were overmatched by Dallas and spit out the bit. Bynum kept trying but if you think that same group will bring a title back to Los Angeles then you saw a different series  then I did. Some times you can have a man crush on a team and not see the reality.

gasol gave us a poor excuse why he didn’t play his best in this year playoffs. To me hes happy with 2 rings and thats it. hes not hungry like kobe. getting howard is impossible. we just need a strong pg and shooters off the bench and a back up center.

    • Truth Broker

lmao, you tool. no fan in this league wouldnt want dwight howard on their team. the same guy who has won defensive player of the year 3 straight years and is considered by every single person in the world as the best center in the world. he comes to your team and you are instantly a championship contender. there are so few quality big men in this league, so if you had a shot at the best big man in the league of course you take it.Not only that, he is media and fan friendly. He is said to be TOO NICE, by a lot of people. So you would be getting a great player, and great person…not like Bynum tearing his Lakers jersey off on court as hes walking off court after he launched a 5 foot 6 guy on the ground. Real fans follow TEAMS…not players. I could care less who the LAKERS have on the team(except Kobe, because he pretty much IS the lakers at this point in his career), as long as they are contending for the title. that is what you root for, you TEAM winning a ring. so yes, we would kill to have Dwight in purple and gold! Dumb@$$

You want a nice guy? You talk like a fool talking about he’s fan friendly. Go the hell to Orlando if you want your fan frienly player. Stop downplaying our players. They need to ban all you dudes off the board with this worship of player who are not Lakers, Bynum will lock Dwight Ass down any day any time.( Real fans follow teams not players ) What the hell you call your obsession with Dwight Howard? If their’s anybody who’s a stupid @ss it’s you. Get the hell off this board and go root for Dwight on Orlando’s board and stop f—–en dreaming!

ummm have you watched the two of them play? dwight DOMINATES Drew. I love Drew He is the 2nd best center in the league…when hes healthy. and you telling me real fans follow teams not players, no shit! I just said the same damn thing. I dont worship Dwight, I am simply a realist. Dont call yourself more of a fan than me because I was to IMPROVE the team. The same team that just got swept by the Mavs, the same team that sat back and watched all these teams improve last year. while we got older and slower. There will be some huge moves this off season or middle of next season, because they are in the buisness of winning. When yo are in a BUISNESS you do what is best for your orginization. Getting Dwight in a straight up trade for Drew, is best for our orginization. Ive been following the lakers a lot longer than you, and can promise  know a lot more about our history than you do. so shut the fuck up  you dumb bitch. I want the TEAM to improve to win titles. None of them even like each other. They OBVIOUSLY need a change of venues. I look forward to the LAKERS winning titles. And bringing the 3 time defensive player of the year to the team only makes that a better chance. so call me what you want. you root for your players, and ill root for my team. you call yourself a better fan because you want to stick to the same old same old, the same team that gets swept and has a million reasons why they dont like each other. ill keep rooting for the team that tries to improve and do what they get paid millions for. winning rings.

  • nope

trades have to make sense, this one does not.

    • MC1112

Long time Warriors fan here, and as much as I would love to have big DHoward sport my team’s uniform. No way in Hell Orlando pulls the trigger on that trade. They would need a lot more to even consider moving him. Probably more like Ellis and/or Curry, Udoh, Wright, all our expirings and our first round draft picks in alternating years for like the next 10 years, so 5 of the next 10 years bi-annually since teams aren’t allowed to trade consecutive first round picks. Unless the new CBA allows for it if and when it ever gets in place.

  • Sean K

That’s a horrible deal for Orlando. Talent wise, not as much, but outside scoring SG like Ellis isn’t what Orlando is looking for. They need quality big men in exchange for Howard.

    Magic would receive:
Noah + Boozer + Draft Picks

    Bulls would receive:
    Dwight Howard, Quentin Richardson

  • CityBall

Hahah why would Jerry West, who now works for the Warriors, HELP the lakers? How arrogant you lakers fans all are.

    • Anonymous

He might do it because while you have two exciting quick gaurds you can not win in the NBA without size.If you want a talented big man one of them will have to go. Maybe not to the lakers but somewhere if they can make a deal. There are none sharper then Jerry West.

  • Laker Fan Since 1975

The core of the Lakers is good, it is our bench that needs tweeking.  The only position we shoud be tring to fill is at the point guard. Move Fish to the bench with Lamar.  Go after Paul or Westbrook or even J.J. B from the Mavs.  Other than that we have the team to win.  The only ? is how far will Brown take us in the playoffs.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Kusy.Mahlik Khashaun Edwards

J.J. B??? Ur an idiot! Bynum & future picks for Howard . After that, the lakers should trade Gasol & our first & 2 seconds this year for Minnesota’s 2nd Overall Pick & Kevin Love. Then draft either Kyrie Irving (If he falls to number 2) or Brandon Knight. Lakers would definitely be the favorite for years!!!
