Dwight Howard Participates in Contact Drills at Lakers Practice Facility

No timetable has been set for Dwight Howard’s return to the basketball floor with the superstar center still working to get back to 100 percent during his rehab from back surgery. Even though Howard has already been ruled out for the beginning of training camp for the Los Angeles Lakers and the first preseason game against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 7, the perennial All-Star has been active at the Lakers practice facility in El Segundo, California.

In the video below, Howard is seen practicing his post moves with Lakers assistant coach Darvin Ham. Howard appears strong and healthy with his back to the basket. Ham is no Andrew Bynum or anything comparable to the other centers Howard will face throughout the course of the upcoming NBA season, but it’s definitely a good sign to see Howard on the floor practicing with contact.

As seen in the video, Howard is obviously improving and getting closer and closer to suiting up for his debut with the Lakers. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year making his debut for the Lakers in the season-opener against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 30 isn’t entirely out of the question with the big man going through contact drills a month before the beginning of the season.

Another thing to take notice of in this video of Howard practicing his post moves is the scrimmage in the background. Five-time NBA champion and current free agent Derek Fisher is participating in the scrimmage. Even though Fisher can’t sign with the Lakers until March 15 of next year, the veteran point guard might be holding out until that time while staying in shape with his former team.
