Dan Gilbert Writes Letter to David Stern Urging Blocking of Trade

Yahoo! Sports recently released a letter that was apparently written by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and directed at David Stern urging the commissioner to block the trade that would send Chris Paul to the Lakers.

Here is the complete letter:

It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.

This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.

Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.

I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).

I just don’t see how we can allow this trade to happen.

I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.

When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Dan G.

  • Loretta

David is mad cause his team sucks

    • Carey

Heat get bosh, wade and lebron…explain that!!!

      • http://@roseontheshore Jc

Hey the heat are not owned by the league, therefore the heat were allowed to make the trade and acquire bosh and James even without trading wade
The hornets are owned by the NBA, they are owned by 29 owners

        • ScorpioShaw

I know and they so stupid they didn’t realize they were getting best of the deal, picking up Odom, Kevin Martin, Scola, Dragic they eould have had pretty good squad.

      • john

I know right?! He’s just jealous because the laker’s will be so dominant

  • LikeMike

Dan G. should get a life and move in with the Lebron thingie! You’re Crazy Dan G.!!! Stop crying, its been a while already!!!!

  • ScorpioShaw

Fuck that shit Dan, U just mad cuz Jester James left U high and dry, this trade blocking is a travesty just becuz the Lakers is 10times better than the Cavs already mean we can’t make a trade to be even better, thats Fucked up if thats the case David Stern need to break that shit up in Miami ASAP!!!!!!!

  • Tommy Huynh

He’s just jealous just cause LBJ shitted on his face. David Stern’s doing what he asks because he’s such a wuss. Lakers would’ve been one of the best teams in NBA this year.

So what your saying that since the lakers figured out a way to save money, while grabbing one of the point guards in the league, right? So your complaining that they run a good business and found a way to save money. Hmmm, seems like you need some help in team building, when your willing to get serious get at me.. Why tarnish you and your city’s image?

  • Cris

Why the fuck do u care?? Bitch your complaining about the lakers getting chris paul?? Look what happened in Miami! And who the fuck are you to say this type of shit?? You dont own the team! Wtf go back to ur losing team!

  • Mike T

I hope no superstar ever goes to your team. And if you happen to draft one, i hope leaves you high and dry. The CAVS, are now one the blacklist of all Skilled nBa players. your gonna have to go to the Dleague to fill your roster Biatch. I’m so glad Lebron left yo ass now.

  • john

Hes just hating because james left the cavs! But chris Paul doesn’t want to practice with the hornets, and he will do everything for the trade just to happen

  • Mike

    Fuckin bitch ass hater!!!!

  • Charles paden

Perhaps you should have simply minded your business and your teams business and let CP3 go where he wanted to go i mean.. it’s not like you have much of a team with the CAV’s Anyway..seeing as how… they made the playoff’s last year….. NOT! ;)

LBJ left out from under your nose and now you have a sore spot for the team.’s in general.. you placing the bitch move to David the crybaby Stern simply states the same thing work on getting you’re team to.. 500 to be a contender before you start worrying over the rest of the league….you could not stop LBJ and now your looking to what be a HERO to the NBA owners…..thought the lockout drama was over…but by the looks of things…the REAL drama has yet to begin……

maybe the Cav’s can get a championship with a shorter season……lol…yeah…right

Dan Gilbert just screwed himself ( and David Stern). He just indicted himself and Stern of collusion. I think that Chris Paul has a real chance of suing and winning! Dan Gilbert is an idiot…

    • Prince

Truly Amazing that the nba would blatantly operate in this very dishonest manner!

DAN GILBERT YOU ARE A FUCKIN PRICK!! Really? So you are really saying “Commissioner this trade is fair and my team sucks and the Lakers are just too good and too smart when it comes to making trades for who they want, I don’t know how to do what they do so this trade should just be vetoed.” DUDE WORRY ABOUT UR OWN GARBAGE TEAM QUEER!

  • Gezo

Heyy Dan! If u can’t afford to stay in the business then get the hell out of the business!! #LAKERS BABY!

  • Prince

Owners should vote on trade. This is worse than the bri split during the lockout!

  • Jae

I’m not a CP3 fan but, damn this is f’d. Makes you think about what could happen with future trades.

I guess he’s still licking his wounds from what went down with Lebron. I see why he left.

There isn’t a word in our language sufficient to describe Mr. Gilbert. Yeah, Dan, you vote as 1/29th owner of the Hornets. Except your entire screed is devoid of any concern for the Hornets. You write of LA getting better with Paul and possibly even better with Howard added on. You mention lowered Lakers payroll and less revenue share from luxury tax for you. But again, not word one about the Hornets.

  • Boi

Because we got a front office that knows how to do their job. We should be penalized and lower our standards to a less than mediocre team.

Lakers always made the best trades , because they don’t panic , thats why we got all those bannners.

  • Sexydiva

What a freakin douche! I can’t wait to read what’s going to happen next tomorrow evening!

  • WoW

I guess the Lakers aren’t allowed to make trades for star players… Lakers are blackballed! WoW! I feel bad for the Lakers… And I’m not even a Laker fan!

  • Tk

He is just mad his team will never see,a chip

  • Sammie

Now I am really happy lebron james left the cavaliers, the hell with you dan gilbert!

  • Justin

Dan Gilbert is an idiot pure and simple. He’s going to have happen to NO the same thing that happened to him. Fine. Don’t let CP go to LA. He’ll be gone at the end of the season anyway and the Hornets will get nothing. If he had traded Lebron elsewhere instead of hoping and praying that he’d stay in Cleveland, he could have made out just fine I think. I’m sure he’s a good business man, but in terms of being an owner and making sound decisions on that end, he’s horrible. Because for all his hating and blocking, it’s not going to “help” the Hornets, and it most certainly isn’t going to help the Cavaliers.

  • Abraham

No, Dan, your team should be the “Cleveland Rear Admirals”.

  • Ricardo

He’s mad lebron left his Wack team

  • Gene Thomas

Dan Gilbert is an idiot plain and simple for starters his man card should be replaced with a lifetime supply of Midol extra strength cramp relief. The NBA owns the New Oreans team by blocking this trade Paul has 66 games left and he is a free agent he walks and the NBA gets no value for him at all. The trade would have been great for all involved. Dan Glibert has a team in Cleveland no one in their right mind wants to go play there his meal ticket is in Miami. He is a scumbag owner who owns a team that will not win a title in the next 5 to 10 years.

Wowwww! What a buster. Can u say H A T E R I S M boys and girls? SMDH This is what fear of the yellow & purple yields!!! Again wow!!
