Clippers’ Vinny Del Negro Doesn’t Believe Lakers Can Beat Spurs

NBA: Brooklyn Nets at Los Angeles ClippersBoth the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers are in the playoffs this season, but each team is off to a very different start. After the Clippers beat up on the Grizzlies in Game 1 on Saturday night, the Lakers fell to the Spurs on Sunday afternoon in San Antonio. Obviously the Clippers earned a higher seed by playing better in the regular season, giving them a seemingly more favorable matchup. Still, their head coach doesn’t have a lot of faith in the Lakers’ chances to overcome San Antonio.

According to Brett Pollakoff of NBC Pro Basketball Talk, Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro was asked about the Lakers and if they had a legitimate shot to take down the Spurs.

His one-word answer, after pausing for a second or two: “No.”

Well, that about sums that up.

Obviously you don’t expect Del Negro to be worried too much about a series that doesn’t involve his team, but the candid response was amusing to say the least. There’s no love lost between the Clippers and Lakers, who have developed a fun little cross-hall rivalry since the Clippers acquired Chris Paul after he was momentarily a Laker. To make matters worse for the Lakers, Del Negro’s Clippers swept them in the regular season 4-0, and already look to have a better chance at advancing farther in the playoffs.

Still, don’t expect Del Negro’s opinion to impact the Lakers too much. In fact, odds are they won’t even hear about it. For now, they’re concerned with winning Game 2 in San Antonio, not what the Clippers’ coach has to say.
