BREAKING: Mike D’Antoni Resigns As Head Coach Of Los Angeles Lakers

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

Through all of the conflicting reports since the start of the off-season, Mike D’Antoni has resigned as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne:

With the Lakers finishing with the worst record in franchise history since moving to Los Angeles, there was speculation that the organization would move in a different direction at the head coaching position.

For most of the off-season, there were conflicting reports on D’Antoni’s future with the Lakers. Recently, there were reports that D’Antoni was looking for the team to pick up his fourth year option.

With the 27-55 season which was the sixth worst record in the league, it does come as a surprise that D’Antoni has decided to resign. In two seasons in Los Angeles, D’Antoni posted an 67-82 record after being hired instead of Phil Jackson five games into the 2012-13 season.

With the head coaching position of the Lakers now available, there are numerous candidates the team will consider. In perhaps the most important off-season for the franchise since the 2003-04 season, the Lakers will have a high draft pick in this year’s highly anticipated draft to go along with ample cap room.

PRAISE THE LORD! The best two days of Los Angeles basketball: Sterling and now Mr. Dantoni gone! I’m so elated.

    • Daspin

      Laker fan group hug everyone.

      • Jim213

No diss but wish Mike luck wherever he endz up. He needs to end up in a bottom dweller team to mold his own team from the ground up. He made the right choice for his NBA future b/c with another bad season (w/Lakers) he’d likely be passed up by other team’s down the road..

        • ra

Agree, Jim. I wish him the best, and he will work well building a team from the ground up. I’m sure there are many players who would like to work with him.

He may not get to a Championship, but he can sure create some exciting basketball. Our plusses for this year were some record 3-point shooting, and he actually kept things a little interesting.

Also, agree with the fact that he’s leaving at this time, and that will better his prospects (because he does have some excuses, like Kobe & Nash being out, etc.).

He was semi-retired when the Lakers recruited him, and I’m ‘sure’ there will be openings next year, or he could take a year off.

In the meantime, we need another coach. Your thoughts?

          • independentbynature

Anyone will be a step up.

          • Jim213

Numerous options (playoff coach?) hopefully it’s a younger future coach given that it’s best to find the most suitable for stability (coach position) purposes allowing the FO to focus on other things with regards to trying to retain top talent IMO.

          • ra

ok, name some names, Jim. We’re ready for that.

          • Jim213

Still early but Scott Brooks (if OKC loses series) may be a possibility. Hollins and B Scott are other options but still waiting for the pool to deepen. For me it’s just about hiring the best coach possible that can remain with the team for more than 3-4 years to help build/sustain something for the future.

        • LakersHeatBeef

          Agreed.

        • Jim213

          (PUN),,,

          • independentbynature

Too funny. If you’ve read my arguments with them, you know how I feel.LOL.This might finally shut them up.Well, not for long,I’m sure.

          • Jim213

Truth they do have their points but it’s been like that (between myself and DP/Hookedonnews) since last summer but guess you’ll fit in just right.

          • independentbynature

We’ve been fighting the good fight.LOL.

          • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

Does PUN stand for something? Every time you use it, there is no pun, so I’m confused…

          • Jim213

Humor not to be taken seriously.

    • LegendInMyMind

The way Sterling left was kinda worrisome, though. Sets a bad precedent.

  • kobe24

MDA IM GOING TO MISS YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU :(

    SIKE FUCK YA LETS CELEBRATE!!!!!@~!@!~!!@~!@!

  • MissCicely

He can’t feel great right now (as a person), but still exciting news.

  • Levels

All is right in the world (sarcasm) yet very very happy about this… Byron Scott welcome home…

  • kookiebuger

HOLY SHIT IT FINALLY HAPPENED THANK YOU GOD!!!!!!!!

  • Leonel CuffyoChick Pierre

    Praise The Lord!!!! lol

  • kmackt

    HELL YEAH!!!!!!!

  • KDones 15

Dantoni is gone. Nothing but praise for our organization. Go Lakers

  • Pablo Martin

WOOOOOW!!! THANKS MITCH!!!!! I`AM HAPPY NOW!!!! — KOBE IS NOW SMILING- THE LAKER NATION IS NOW SMILING! YEEEEEES!

    G.Karl?
    Hollins?
    B.Scott?
    Jeff Van gundy?
    Ollie?

    • ra

Doc Rivers (1), SVG (2), Hollins (3) – but we need some bigs for Hollins – have to keep Pau Gasol. The first two (Doc & SVG) will create ‘exciting’ basketball for the Lakers. We need that.

      • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

I don’t remember what kind of offense SVG ran in Miami before Riles kicked him out, but in Orlando he ran pick-and-roll and shoot as many threes as possible. That’s Mike D’Antoni’s offense. Doc is the anti-Laker and should never be considered.

  • TheTruthKills

    Oh happy day.

  • showtime818

Celebration at Yardhouse on Figueroa!!! This is the best news Lakers have had in a while!!!

  • Lakers Fan

    YYYYYYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!

  • itsssmehann

    Thank God!! Oh happy day!!

  • independentbynature

Finally, some good news for Lakers fans…..Now,we can move forward.

    • Jim213

Who’d you like to see run the team next season?

      • Lakers Fan

Either Lionell Hollins, Jeff Van Gundy, or Byron Scott.

      • independentbynature

I would like to see Byron Scott hired. But,I won’t complain if he’s not.I think he’s a good fit to return us to the glory days.I know he wants the job bad.Been waiting for it,in fact.

      • LakersHeatBeef

LOL Not sure yet.Anyways Jim what do you think the Mike D’Antoni and Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak went like for him to quit on the spot with a resignation LOL?

Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak probably chewed him out and talked down on him and then they probably mentioned demoting him and telling him to report to work early morning as a video coordinator LOL.Wow Mike D’Antoni must been pissed and stormed out and just said I QUIT!

Thank you Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak for roughing up MDA enough to make in him resign leaving his contract to be null and void.Happy as Mickey Mouse Lakers Nation stand proud

        WE ARE ONE LAKERS NATION!
        WE OUT HERE.HAVING FUN TONIGHT!
        TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY!

        • Jim213

IMO, it really came down to 2015-2016 team option. He didn’t care what the fans thought (Mike) as he wanted more so for FO to have his back and give him job security for the next two seasons.

However, IMO FO didn’t have a clear cut plan tho given Mike’s resignation they have no option but to find the best coach for the long term.

  • 3339

    There is a God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no more bullshit from this guy
Lakers are officially on their way back to the top.

  • CharlieMurphy!

    YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

  • Sti1lmatic

    Si se puede

    • showtime818

      haha we already did!!

  • independentbynature

    Who says prayers aren’t answered?

  • BULL

mothafucka…….. WHERE HOLLINS AT? ITS A CELEBRATION!!!!!!

  • LakersHeatBeef

The second i heard that Mike D’Antoni was pushing for his option to be picked up by the team i knew his days were numbered as coach especially when the Lakers were reluctant to pick up his team option. The Lakers might just get John Calipari afterall. But patience is the key some top coaches from the playoffs might get fired like Vogel,Brooks,Mark Jackson also Doc Rivers might ask for his release.

    • ra

None of those, except Doc Rivers. Add SVG, or Coach K.

      • LakersHeatBeef

Yeah Stan has interest in the Timberwolves job reportedly.Coach K is at Duke he seems content.Doc is at a crossroad in his career. But otherwise their are many endless possibilities to coach the Lakers.Stan could shift his interest quickly to the Lakers.I like Lionel Hollins and his coaching style but their is more to it than that.Finding a new coach is a long well thought out process.

        • ra

I (personally) want a Championship coach, not the ’2nd-round exit’ coaches. Think we could talk Bernie Bickerstaff into coming out of retirement? He has the highest winning percentage of any Lakers coach :)

          • LakersHeatBeef

Yeah a championship level coach is welcomed.:-)

  • orpheusdagawd

    YES THANK GOD!!!!!!!

  • BULL

    LAKERS STAND UPPPPPPPPP

  • ra

Well, many at Lakers Nation got what they wanted. Maybe Kobe did too. MDA was right coach, wrong time. Steve Nash not around, not good future prospects for MDA’s system, etc. (I’m sure the refusal to extend MDA’s contract had something to do with it).

    I hope he’s doing well.

In the meantime, we need a new coach. Doc Rivers is prob. staying with Clips. Or …..

  • BULL

LAKER FAMILY STAND THE FUC UPPPPPP

  • independentbynature

Bye bye smallball. Now we can chant “DEFENSE” again without being sarcastic.

  • BULL

LETS START THIS SHIT UP… QUESTION ALL MY LAKER BROS AND SIS…. IF DONALD STERLING KEEP OWNERSHIP W CLIPPS, WOULD WE WANT DOC RIVERS OVER HERE?

    • independentbynature

I’m not sure.I still see a Celtic when I look at him.

      • BULL

exactly but he is a damn good coach man… idk

      • TheTruthKills

        Bill Sharman was a Celtic

        • independentbynature

So was Rick Fox.But they didn’t cover up our banners.

          • BULL

            hahaha i like that..

      • rivgoldenboy85

i agree doc is still a celtic in my eyes… and im still salty about the 08 finals

      • Robert J. Carmack

Purple & Gold Trumps Green everyday! He’s the best coach out there… Vogel;NO, too weak of a coach, could not manage the youngsters… vets too much for him. Chicago’s coach might be getting free.

        • independentbynature

I don’t think either will be available. But,if we’re going for ex-Celtics,I’d rather have Thibs.I’d really rather go back to showtime roots and get B. Scott,personally.K. Irving would follow from the Cavs and away we go.

    • itsssmehann

Yes, we would! I’m pretty sure he will leave the clips!

    • ra

YES, we want Doc. He’s a CHAMPIONSHIP coach. (I know, he coached the Celtics in their win against the Lakers years back, but I always liked him as a Coach because he had respect for the Lakers during that time – he NEVER said bad things about the Lakers, despite the rivalry).

      • BULL

ok i c you .. but you know its just badd blooodd with them green bastards

        • ra

you know, I don’t think so for this. I think Doc wanted to come to the Lakers all along, and had to take a ‘step’ to get closer. Now he’s just down the hall.

Besides, I don’t think Doc approved of the ‘wheelchair’ move that ‘what’s his name – Truth (or Lie)’ orchestrated. Doc’s a good guy, in ALL aspects. He really passed a HUGE test the last few days. A man of great integrity. He has “Laker” integrity.

Plus (and think about this), it would actually be a ‘slap’ to the Celtics face if Doc comes here. The Celtics are ‘done’. The Lakers ‘always’ have a bright future.

    • http://www.foxhilldesign.com Josh

No! He’s a Celtic AND he covered the Lakers banners and retired jerseys. Laker Nation should NEVER embrace a man who blatantly disrespected the entire franchise like that!

      • independentbynature

        I agree.I still see Doc as a Celtic.And the banners really P.Oed me,too.Besides,I don’t think he’s leaving.

    • taikens8

      He’ll Yea!!!!!!!

  • Matt Williams

    Because I’m happy!!

  • Donald sterling

    Clippers are better!!!

    • kookiebuger

HookedonAntoni. He told me Antoni will never resign. He’s got some crow feathers to eat.He argued with me about it relentlessly.

      I have Byron Scott, also.

    • independentbynature

      Me too.

  • Robert J. Carmack

YahOoooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Day ! Perfect Day! in One big swoop, like Michael Corleone did in the Godfather …cleaning day in LA!!!
    (diff reasons of course)

  • rivgoldenboy85

finally he’s out.. i was getting nervous.. the style he wants play might be a little more successful in college… everybody is saying doc but i still consider him a celtic

    • ra

Yes, Doc. Not a Celtic. He’s an LA-ite now. And, he never dissed the Lakers. He was the only one on that team I didn’t mind (plus, he’s a coach – AND, he’s not a ‘celtic-for-life’ anymore). I hope he comes here.

      • independentbynature

He covered up our banners, man.Forgiveness is a difficult concept for some of us.LOL.Besides,he under contract.

        • ra

but – he’s -a CHAMPIONSHIP coach. That’s what the Lakers need for the next few years. Sign him to 5 years. TRUST me. You’ll get all the free agents flocking here. He’s a Defense oriented coach too. We need that.

Please, let the Celtic hate go (for Doc). He’s not a Celtic anymore. Please look at how he handled things the last few days. He should get an award for that. The hardest thing any coach of any NBA team has ever done. Keep his players going during that horrible time. Keeping the media in check. Keeping things level with ownership. It’s like Tom Cruise in the Firm – Tom kept the Mafia AND the FBI AND his employers in check. Doc is a hero now. Green is gone. Time for Purple and Gold

          • independentbynature

            I know….but still…..he covered up our banners.LOL.

        • Sylvia Ross

You don’t know how happy I am right now. This has been a
long journey but it is finally over !!

          • independentbynature

Me too,Sylvia. Our prayers got answered.Remember what HookedonAntoni told us.Antoni will never resign. He told us we were crazy.Crazy like a fox !!!LOL.Will he have the nerve to post? You know he’s crying.LOL.

  • Redemption4LA

Hip Hip, Hell M-U-T-H-A F#%!IN YEEEAH!! He just made it easy for you boys (Jim n Mitch)..Now, Back to the basketball business at hand, returning to dominance. No excuse to not make major improvements now. If the next selection for coach is RESPECTED more than ANYTHING else, a coach players will listen to and play they’re ass off for, it’s on. We have some athletic young guns, now just need the bigs and the right system to put it all in place….thanks MDA for stepping aside and not hindering the forward progress, this is by far your best coaching move in 2 yrs…sincere thanks

  • Frank

The best decision D’Antoni has made all season GREAT JOB!!! D’Antoni boy im gonna sleep good tonight

  • JohnSmith00

No surprise to me, good riddance.

  • Hardrock

Laker fans may celebrate Mike’s leaving, but be careful what you wish for. May have been several factors working against us this year which would have been very difficult, if not impossible for any coach to overcome. Could it be that Phil Jackson not being hired made Mike a target for Lakers fans who were unwilling to be objective when evaluating his coaching abilities? No doubt the Lakers have not performed as well as we would have liked, but is Mike’s coaching ability the reason? We shall see.

    • independentbynature

      One word for you…DEFENSE !!!

    • ra

D’Antoni was hired to work in tandem with Steve Nash. It wasn’t a bad choice back then, until Steve got injured. Then D’Antoni had no ‘field general’ to correctly run his offense. It was actually a nightmare.

Then, he had to work with D-League players, and compete in the NBA. It really wasn’t his fault, but too many things happened, and having him back might further aggravate things (esp. with the Free Agent market coming up the next few years). The Lakers need a coach that’s both Championship caliber, and will attract FA’s and other players. That would be Doc Rivers. But there are other coaches who might fit the bill if Doc can’t get here.

The Lakers were trying to stay loyal (and maybe save money) by letting the 3rd year of D’Antoni’s contract play out, so he (D’Antoni) made it easier by resigning.

We just have to move on now, that’s all.

  • independentbynature

    No more Pringles !!!

    • independentbynature

And that makes me as happy as a dog without fleas….
