Be Like Mike

By ShoeAffliction | Gear » News | 10.09.09 | SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Michael Jordan will soon be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Jordan not only impacted the game on the court but off the court as well.  The Air Jordan shoe has not only revolutionized the shoe industry, but is has given birth to an entire sneaker culture.  Even though Michael Jordan hasn’t played an NBA game in over five years his shoes are still selling out, and are some of the most sought after sneakers available.

Ever since Kobe Bryant entered the NBA in 1996 he has drawn comparisons to Michael Jordan.  It was definitely fun to watch the few times MichaelJordanKobeBryantJordan and Bryant played against each other, even if it was mainly with Jordan playing for the Washington Wizards.  Thirteen years later and Bryant has not only written his own legacy, but one that is continuously growing.

The comparisons between Jordan and Bryant go far beyond the court as well.  During this past year, Bryant’s signature Nike shoe made an incredible splash in the sneaker world.  The very popular Zoom Kobe IV was revolutionary and became an magic-johnson-michael-jordan instant classic, very similar to the Air Jordan 1 shoe released in 1985.  While Kobe’s impact on the shoe industry is unlikely to surpass Jordan’s, it will certainly be entertaining to watch Bryant become part of sneaker history.  Whether you are a Lakers fan or not, Bryant’s shoes will undoubtedly be a collector’s item in the future, so grab a pair now if you can.
Lakers fans, do you remember Michael Jordan from the 1991 NBA Finals with his famous switch hand layup?  You most certainly do.  But do you remember which Air Jordan model he was wearing?  The question we have for all of Lakers Nation is your opinion on which Air Jordan model was or is your favorite ever.  Perhaps in ten years or so we can look back on Bryant’s career and ask the same question.

I can already see Nike pushing out a Kobe DMP with the KBIV/KBV after he retires, signifying the back to back championships he won after his first 3… Yeah, I said it… We’re having another parade next year :)
