2014 NBA Draft: Lakers Very Impressed With Marcus Smart’s Workout

Share on FacebookTweet about this on Twitter

The NBA Draft takes place next week and there are still a number of questions as to who the Lakers will draft. One major name, Julius Randle, works out today but another popular choice already worked out with the team.

At the group workouts two weeks ago, Oklahoma State point guard Marcus Smart worked out with the Lakers and apparently left a good impression on the team according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin:

This should come as no surprise to anyone who watched Smart during his time with the Cowboys. He has always demonstrated great heart, competitiveness, and a will to win that is unmatched by most players at any level.

The main questions surrounding Smart are whether he can control his emotions, as he had a couple of incidents last year, and whether he can improve on his shooting.

The Lakers have had a major need at point guard for a few years now. With the Western Conference full of top point guards like Tony Parker, Chris Paul, and Damian Lillard, the Lakers need someone who can keep up with those guys.

Smart was part of the group workout a couple of weeks ago and was matched up with the likes of Tyler Ennis and Zach LaVine. If the Lakers do decide to keep the pick instead of trading it away, Smart could make a great choice.

Unless Orlando drafts him first. Two workouts with them and they probably would’ve drafted him if he came out last year… should be interesting

      • LAL

If Orlando drafted Smart, Exum will be available. Lakers should trade with Jazz (they will pick Exum at 5, Lakers pick Vonleh at 7). Jazz doesn’t need Exum because they already have Trey Burke but if Exum available at 6, Boston will certainly take him. So, the Lakers need to sweeten with future pick.

        • VillainKing

I think Orlando will draft Exum hope the Lakers get Smart..

          • LAL

It’s 50-50 possibility here because Magic called Smart for 2nd workout because they really like him. In fact, they wanted Smart in last year draft but Smart decided to stay.

I would be surprise if they choose Smart over Exum because there are many uncertainty around Exum. Magic have done their homework on Smart and they have enough data about him in college.

          • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

If MAgic take Smart with the 4th pick…Jazz is going to take Exum to play SG and PG, Boston is going either Vonleh or Randle… Lakers is drafting Randle or Vonleh with the 7th pick.

But if Magic chooses Exum… I think, Smart is going to fall to us at 7th.

          • LAL

It’s possible but like I said, if Lakers can sweeten the deal with future pick, they might take it because they don’t really need Exum. They have Trey Burke at PG and Alec Burks at SG.

What Jazz needs is a PF who can compliment Derrick Favors because he is much better at C than Kanter. They need someone who can stretch the floor like Vonleh.

At the moment, Celtics are leaning towards Aaron Gordon over Vonleh and Randle. But if Exum is available at 6, they would definitely take him. That’s why only Jazz can make this work by swapping the picks.

          • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

I would be happy with either Randle or Smart…

          • thomas evans

I think kings end up getting exum. Theyre gonna trade with jazz for that pick if he doesnt get grabbed by orlando

          • thomas evans

Celtics said gordon is their favorite pf

          • VillainKing

it’s 50-50 but for me Orlando will choose Exum..and there is a big chance Smart will fall for the Lakers at 7..

          • Doug Fuller

One consideration NO ONE has considered is that Orlando passes on a point all together with the 4 pick. They very well could pick up 1 of the power forwards with the 4 spot and pick up Elfrid Payton orTtyler Ennis with the 12 pick. No one has considered it but it’s possible..If they do we could have our pick…I don’t think the magic will take Exum for sure because what take ANOTHER guy that they will lose to the Lakers?? No one knows what the magic will do guys.

          • VillainKing

Your correct no one know who is the player that Orlando going to draft all of that is probability but in my own opinion they will not pass on Exum also Exum and Oladipo are close friends..

          • jksure

I think Exum will be the biggest bust of this draft, he’s a poor man’s Eddie Jones without the athleticism. He’s just as quick as Eddie but Eddie was dunking over opponents left and right, Exum doesn’t have the ability to dunk through traffic. He might be s good passer, but you can get a good passing PG anywhere in the draft.

          • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

YOu idea of Eddie Jones was the veteran one… when he came to the league, he wasnt’ that… I think Exum has better potential than Jones…

          • nlruizjr

If eddie Jones was all that, the Lakers would have kept him, enough said !!!!

          • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

Eddie Jones played the same way as Kobe, of course Lakers will let him go considering what they have in Kobe… but that aside, Exum does have potential to be an all star, so does everybody in the draft.

          • nlruizjr

richard, Eddie was no way at Kobe’s level, I saw him come and I saw him go, Eddie was good but not great, infact I believe he bounced around a few teams after the Lakers let him go, great players will not get bounced around.

          • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

you got me wrong buddy… i did not say Eddie Jones was on Kobe’s level… i said, he played the same way as Kobe… same position, same size, etc… but mot the same level.

          • nlruizjr

richard, thanks for correcting me, I misread your comment !!

          • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

            My respect to you….

          • rsgea

Exum strengths are his basketball IQ and athletecism,he is a scoring pg not a pass first though he has the wingspan to be a great defender but he already admits that he has no defense(his coach told him his name hpshould be ante exum because he has no D

        • borsalino12

          1. Cleveland – J.Embiid
          2. Milwaukee – J.Parker
          3. Philadelphia – A.Wiggins
          4. Orlando – M.SMART
          5. Utah – D.Exum
          6. Boston – J.Randle
          7. LAKERS – AARON GORDON
          8. Sacramento – N.Vonleh

This is how it will look on June 26. If, somehow Orlando pass on M.Smart and choose D.Exum instead, The Celtics won’t pass on him. Smart has 2 workouts in Boston too and Danny Ainge is hopping he will be available at # 6. There was a big material in Boston Globe about the desire of the Celtic’s FO to draft Marcus Smart, because R.Rondo will be leaving next summer as a FA.And Marcus has stated many times, that he will love to become a Celtics. Match made in Heaven.

          • VillainKing

            No that list will never happen borsalino12;
            7. L.A. LAKERS – MARCUS SMART

          • VillainKing

Another false information from you borsalino12 why did you not mention your cousin living in Boston this time..The player that the Boston Celtics wants to draft is Aaron Gordon and that statement said by their GM Danny Ainge..

          • borsalino12

You may be right about this. It makes total sense if they draft M.Smart and send him to Minnesota for Kevin Love, of course with some other fillers. In that case, R.Rondo can decide to stay in Boston. In any other scenario, he has stated that is going to exercise his PO next summer and would leave the town.
So, one way or another, your favorite idiot Marcus Smart will be gone before our turn comes. And your dream of “All NBA Bad Ass Back-court ” of M.Smart and L.Stephenson will never ever happen. Wright my words. Lakers has never tolerated “Bad Ass” boys. We are an elite organization dude and we don’t even have fans from Foster Homes like you. So get your bad ass approach out of this forum and go fuck yourself somewhere else, but not here.Understood ?

          • VillainKing

No, your the one that will fuck yourself..did Aaron Gordon broke up with you.?because suddenly you want to trade the Lakers 7thpick..hehheeheh..It will come true borsalino12 just relax..Marcus Smart will be draft in the 7th pick by the L.A. Lakers…Fuck you borsalino12!!!!and you a member of elite organization??What organization maybe your a member of group name “Dumb Organization..FUCK YOU BORSALINO12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • VillainKing

            LAKERS WILL DRAFT MARCUS SMART!!!!

        • Gekko

Boston has Rondo, they are not going to draft Exum. However, good chance Orlando will take him.

        • thomas evans

Exum can play sg also. He would fit well next to burke who can stretch the floor. I hope they dont pick him tho. Go lakers

The Lakers have another group workout planned Friday. They are inviting Marcus Smart and Elfrid Payton back. Nik Stauskas also expected.

      • borsalino12

Elfrid Payton will be an All-Star in this league for sure. This guy is the best PG from this draft class. Marcus may be a good defender, but he is very poor shooter and passer. That is why, the best for the Lakers is to down-trade the pic, for # 14 and # 18 (Phoenix), so we can get Elfrid Payton and Dario Saric. That is what i call a smart move. Not drafting Smart. Hello ViKi.

        • VillainKing

Wrong Marcus Smart can be an All-star and a Superstar in the NBA..FUCK YOU borsalino12!!!

        • VillainKing

That move called the DUMB move perfectly for you borsalino12.. The Smart move is the Lakers will draft Marcus Smart at 7th pick accept it borsalino12..

    • Ryan

I want Marcus Smart on the Lakers.Draft Smart.

    • VillainKing

      Marcus Smart please!!

    • A Fan

I’m all for either Marcus Smart or Aaron Gordon. If the Lakers are seriously going to pursue Kevin Love in next year’s FA, then there’s no question about it: They’ll need to draft someone who not only has a high ceiling, but has the ability to defend the perimeter.

Smart’s a bully and can definitely shut down opposing guards with his size, intensity, and athleticism, which is a must-have in the West full of star PG’s. Giving him a year or two to develop under Nash and Kobe could do wonders for his career.

On the other hand, Gordon’s a combo forward. Good defender, solid rebounder, has the athleticism to defend multiple positions.

Both need to work on their shooting but hey, shooting the ball is something you can improve. You can’t teach hustle and athleticism (maybe athleticism, but not so much).

      • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Agree. Of all things, I’d rather take a tremendous, tenacious athlete who needs to work on some mechanic issues/consistency than a guy who is middle of the road athletically with an average motor but decent ball skills.

Smart is my first choice, but Gordon could easily be a great player to watch.

  • LakersHeatBeef

Marcus Smart has me and he has soft spot in my heart already.I am a big fan of his and i wish him the best of luck in a Lakers uniform.I already love him like one of our own and he isn’t drafted by us yet LOL just crazy how Smart is so intense and competitive he reminds me of Kobe Bryant with his tenacity and will to win.Plus he has awesome length and unmatched strength for a Point Guard.

I watched all his games that were nationally televised last year and i was very impressed and i watched all his games that were televised his freshman year and i was shocked at how good he was.Smart is a very good scorer and a great defensive player.

Yes he is amazing and he will be big time in the NBA.Lots of pure emotion and athletic ability to get the job done on the court.Yes Smart is NBA ready and i have him as my top player for the Lakers to draft.

  • Gary

    Smart has that it factor.

  • charles cohen

Absolutely! I hope he goes to Orlando but you will never worry if he disappears or can’t guard his man. If you see the recent tapes you see he has lowered his shot and can shoot consistently. Will be a special pro.

    • Lakers Nation #24

Sorry what team do you root for?I am a Lakers fan obviously on this site and i love Marcus Smart and his competitive nature it reminds me of Kobe Bryant a great competitor that has a win at all cost mentality.

      • charles cohen

Hello Laker and obviously Kobe fan. Frustratingly, I have been an OKC fan once KD was taken and remain so. To me they are the only potentially dynasty team, with all of the parts and all 25 or under, but with a mediocre coach. I think they will use their mid-level exception to get the wing they need, and more importantly Adams will be a big star.

But I am also a fan of individual players, with AD being my favorite as he might end up being the best-of-all-time. But I have loved Smart and Exum’s games, and feel both will be big stars. Smart would be your best choice as he is an alpha player and is ready to lead. You should get a quality player, and remember Durant is a free agent (restricted) in two years and Davis in two. Good luck.

        • Lakers Nation #24

Well first and foremost Lakers are not getting Kevin Durant unless he wants to come to the Lakers and he seems very content to be in OKC and if that changes well i would be surprised if the Lakers got him.

Yes OKC has a bright future my nephew is a huge OKC fan and he loves Durant and Westbrook.I myself have been a Lakers fan since 1985.Yes Marcus Smart plays the game hard and he has that competitive nature you just can’t teach and he has a heart of a champion.

Yes he will be a factor if he is drafted in the West by the Lakers or Utah honestly it would be best for him to go to the East for you so Russell Westbrook can have one less player to worry about.Do you think Marcus Smart will be a All Star?Who does he remind you of?

You said Orlando hmmm that would be interesting with him and Victor and Arron.

Also Do you think Marcus Smart can have a Damian Lillard type of impact early on in his career? He will influence any team he joins in a positive manner.Good luck to you’re Thunder in the draft and in free agency. You’re team is a low post scorer away from winning it all.Pau Gasol is maybe the player OKC should get to establish a low post offensive game in the playoffs.

          • charles cohen

Hello again. I just like Smart’s game. He is very intelligent and thoughtful not withstanding his temper that day. His team lost their core when their big man got hurt, and their coach is not good.

The draft is better than I originally thought so you will get a key piece but I think the closest player to Marcus is JKidd which is a huge compliment. Remember that most of the GMs are hacks, last year being proof, as the best potential player was taken 11th-Adams.

It’s amazing what Presti has done, probably the best drafting in NBA history. Lamb is still 21, Jackson is 23, Adams just turning 21, Ibaka taken 24th is 24 and RW and KD both 25. And I really like Roberson from Colorado. But Brooks is not the right coach and as a team they haven’t really improved.

But when you can watch AD as he is surreal. With 15 pounds more on him, he will be the best in another year but they don’t have the pieces. Exum worked out with Orlando today and it will be fun to read the reports. By the way I had the privilege to see Kobe once in hs in a tournament. His teammates were all tiny white guys from his school but he was incredible.

          • Lakers Nation #24

Hey yea Sam Presti has drafted great over the years. You love Anthony Davis well let me fill you in on a spectacular big man in this 2014 NBA Draft his name is Noah Vonleh this kid is incredible,he has all the skills needed to be a superstar and he can shoot lights out from the outside 18-24 feet out.Noah Vonleh is a great rebounder and a good shot blocker and he is a amazing athlete also he is one of the most fluid big men ever as he has great speed and good handles like a Point Guard.Just an amazing player and he is one of the youngest players in this draft. You will like him.

Yes GM are hacks and tools as Noah Vonleh is projected #4-#7 that’s ludicrous as he should be top 5 locked in.He might slide to my Lakers that would be great and i will be ecstatic if that happens. These GM just overlook great players,Noah Vonleh is a can’t miss prospect yet not many people think that.

Marcus Smart is a great player and i will be happy if we get him.We have needed a great defensive point guard for many years. He can do it all.

          • &*-+=;’

If you watch Vonleh’s Indiana highlights, or lowlights I should say, on YouTube, you’ll see how poorly he played, this guy sucks his whole buzz is built on a facade of this wingspan. There was another player that got drafted in the lottery due to his long wingspan, Muhammed Saer Sene who never made the team.

          • nlruizjr

If the Lakers have a choice between Smart and Vonleh, they will pick Vonleh because that will be their biggest need because if Gasol, Hill and Kaman go all the Lakers have is Sacre who will never be a starter, imo !!!!!

          • kookiebuger

Marcus Smart’s best case scenario is probably a Eric Bledsoe and worst case something around the lines of Jameer Nelson he can have an instant impact it depends if he develops his jumpshot, if he can be a floor general (which is suppose to be one of his strengths), and if Kobe and him can co-exist.

    • VillainKing

Marcus Smart will be drafted by the L.A. Lakers at 7th pick of NBA draft 2014!!!

    • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

Lowered his shot? Curious what you mean by this.

      • charles cohen

If you can find some game videos look how high his release is. Poor mechanics but fixable. Now look at his. workout tapes. He held it lower and never missed. He will be a bully in a good way. He is a man.

        • http://rantsofascorpio.wordpress.com/ Evan

I’ve seen scouting videos pointing out Smart’s tendency to bring the ball quite low before elevating for his shot (down by his knees), leading to a long shot. Also, his shot issues come from a tendency to not have his body square, often rotating. Also, in his workout video for the Lakers he missed quite a few shots early on, if I remember correctly.

  • Joe blow

Not a huge Smart fan at all, his game while defensively very impressive, offensively is equally unimpressive. I think it will be harder to build a team if you start at this position than start somewhere else. Would I hate it, probably but I can see the allure, they have gotten torched by point guards a lot, but hell everybody torches the Lakers, Carl Landry destroys the Lakers every time they play him. I like Gordon because he can do everything Smart can do but at a far more crucial position.

    • kookiebuger

They both need help from an offensive stand point.

      • Lakers Nation #24

I like Noah Vonleh for us to draft?Thoughts?

        • vdogg

talented, but i don’t see that killer instinct in him. besides, he will take longer to develop and the lakers would like someone who can contribute right away.

Julius Randle, when asked to rate himself against Joel Embiid, Noah Vonleh and Aaron Gordon: “I feel like I’m the best one”

            Thoughts?

          • http://www.haveslot.com/ richard

Julius Randle is the real deal… he’s got the work ethic and the fire in him… look at his eyes in the interview… there’s something there that others don’t have…

          • nlruizjr

I wouldn’t let that “Killer Instinct” be a factor at this stage of his career, Tim Duncan hardly ever displays a “Killer Instinct” but I wouldn’t bet against him.

        • kookiebuger

The potential is there with his length, defense, rebounding, and I’ve read good things about his work ethic, I wouldn’t mind if the Lakers draft him if he is available.

        • charles cohen

I have only seen snippets of Vonleh but he looks like a potential star. Very athletic, can shoot, great body and very young. It is a very good draft. Randle has lost weight and is really talented so the first 8 are very, very good. I was watching a reply of the Dick’s tournament and a sophomore caught my eye, and from what I read, a lot of others. Check him out on some videos–Miles Bridges. Big time. One other kid who will be a college star but a little lithe for the pros but will make Duke the team to beat is Tyus Jones. Cool kid.

The summer league is coming up so it will be very good this year.

    • VillainKing

      I like Smart than Gordon..

  • Lakers Nation #24

The Lakers do want to probably draft Marcus Smart,he has a second workout on Friday.Marcus Smart can play at a high level and i am glad he is the first player to get workouts with the Lakers along with Elfrid Payton.Seems like a great sign of him hopefully doing well enough to get drafted by us at #7.

  • Lionel

Get Smart.Sweet he will be the fresh face we all need at Point Guard.

  • Ruben

Man it will be great if we can draft this awesome player Marcus Smart.Hell ya.

  • Tyrone

Smart is a beast,he is built like a linebacker and he plays at the speed of a sprinter.

  • Tyrone

Friday is his next workout with the Lakers.Mitch is going to have Smart vs Payton?

  • Matt

Marcus Smart has a second workout and he knows the Lakers want to see him continue displaying his talent.Hell he knows they want to draft him.Payton is the player he should out muscle in the paint as Payton is a skinny little guy. Both will be going at it if given the chance on Friday.Yes we gotta draft Marcus Smart he will be a All Star and All NBA on defense he reminds me of Alvin Robertson.

    • VillainKing

      Agree of you..

  • VillainKing

Hope Marcus Smart will be drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers at 7th pick!!

  • Marty Susman

ALL I CAN SAY ABOUT ALL OF THE PLAYERS WAITING TO BE DRAFTED IS, THE LAKERS DESPERATELY NEED A POINT GUARD FOR NOW & THE FUTURE & THEY DESPERATELY IN NEED OF A CENTER……….YES THEY NEED A WING AS WELL AS A POWER FORWARD & YES THEY NEED A WHOLE STARTING FIVE AS WELL….

    • kookiebuger

Anthony Davis and Andre Drummond will be restricted free agents in 2016 when Kobes contract expires, they can/should target them.

      • Marty Susman

        LAKERS WON’T WAIT THAT LONG…IT IS THIS YEAR(SUMMER) & THEN 2015 FREE AGENTS….

        • kookiebuger

There is no guarantee that Love,Aldridge,Marc Gasol, Rondo, etc. will want to play for the Lakers.

          • Marty Susman

No and honestly the only one of them zi would want is Aldridge BUT we might have Love before & if we could get Aldridge as well that would be some front line…

          • kookiebuger

Aldridge and Rondo are probably both longshots and Love and Marc Gasol will probably want to go to a winning team which will be in a few years for the Lakers.

  • VillainKing

Keep the 7th pick Lakers and draft Marcus Smart!!

  • Bruce

So far it looks like it’s between Smart and Randle. Both has upsides, but when a big man comes along like Randle with his caliber and what he brings to the table, it’s just too hard to pass on. I’ll be happy if Lakers take either one. Just want to mention Nic Stauskas, boy I wish we can take draft him too, he fits in perfectly with the team and who doesn’t want a deadly 3-point shooter like him. I hope Lakers find a way to snatch him up.

  • myJasper

No way Smart. Lakers have three points right now. Need an athletic forward.

  • KB24

Is there anyway we can draft both EMBIID AND SMART….would really love that with a healthy kobe and perfect role players, more than enough to lure kevin love in 2015 FA……our assets after the draft night would be 2019 and 2021 picks, marshall, sign and trade options…..how about trade monroe,meeks,marshall,2019-2021 picks for embiid and 2nd rdpicks then re-sign some of our players
SMART,farmar, nash(will mentor smart about pg skills and 3pt shooting)
    KOBE,young,xavier
DENG/ARIZA(who is better overall especially on D)bazemore, miller or joe harris if undrafted
    PAU,blatche
    EMBIID,birdman,sac

Watchout for miami, heard that lowry and miami mutually likes each other but i hope he will stay with the raps

  • KB24

cavs will draft embiid, bucks will take parker(wiggins and giannis share the same position),phi will get wiggins at 3,orlando said they are down to exum or vonleh, jazz will take the best talent probably randle(though they are exploring to trade up for jabari),celtics will trade pick for love(ainge said they will go big either vonleh or gordon),lakers most probabaly smart(50%),vonleh and gordon 25 each…hoping fore some miracle…lakers can get embiid since he is healthy,he would complement perfectly for love,a core of KOBE-LOVE(2015)-EMBIID …..DO IT MITCH

  • borsalino12

Even talking about Marcus Smart is pure wasting of time and total nonsense. We DO NOT need to draft a PG from this draft, when we can simply make a outmatching offer for Eric Bledsoe and sign him, or simply sign UFA Kyle Lowry, who is exactly the same type of player as Marcus Smart – floor general and tough defender with winner mentality. Besides these two names, we can upgrade tremendously the point guard position next summer by signing FA’s Kyrie Irwing and/or Rajon Rondo. These are real possibilities.
The current Lakers roster is very weak at both forward positions and at the center. That is the area, where we have to look to upgrade from the draft, because there is not even one free agent, who can be available for us.In that regard, it is a lot better to draft SF/PF Aaron Gordon, who can fill one or two of this voids in the front-court. Super athletic prospect, excellent rebounder and board protector, who can defend all positions on the floor. As a second option, I will choose the Europe’s MVP for 2013 – Croatian PF Dario Saric. These are two young and very talented prospects, which can become a franchise players one day. We don’t need M.Smart, J.Randle or N.Vonleh. None of them is good fit for the Lakers, especially the first one, who is a ball-demanding guard and for that, he can not be paired with Mr.24.
Eric Bledsoe and Kobe Bryant is 100 times better combination.
