With the 2013-14 NBA season dwindling down, there has been rampant speculation as to which elite prospects will forgo their collegiate eligibility and enter the 2014 NBA Draft. Several players, including Kansas guard Andrew Wiggins and Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart, have already announced their intention to declare for the draft.

Fans and NBA teams have been waiting to hear from the potential number one pick in both Duke’s Jabari Parker and Kansas’ Joel Embiid.

According to Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv, Embiid is expected to announce his decision to go pro tomorrow afternoon in a press conference with Kansas Coach Bill Self:

Joel Embiid will announce his plans to enter the NBA Draft during a press conference with Kansas coach Bill Self on Wednesday at 2 p.m central time, multiple sources told SNY.tv.

Despite constant back injuries, Embiid is seen as a lock for a top three pick, trailing only fellow Kansas player Wiggins and should he choose to go pro, Parker. Embiid is a native of Cameroon and entered the season in the shadow of Wiggins, but his player over the course of the year drastically improved his draft stock.

Embiid is still raw and lacks the offensive game of other elite draft prospects such as Parker and Wiggins, but many scouts believe his ceiling is as high as any player in this draft. His back injuries will certainly draw some attention from teams but as long as Emiid’s tests show no long term damage, teams will have no problem selecting the freshman phenom.

With the Lakers seemingly set to move on from Pau Gasol this off-season, Embiid would make a nice addition to a frontcourt that has struggled mightily on the defensive end. Embiid recently said on Twitter that he wants to live in Los Angeles, only adding to speculation that he would want to play for the Lakers.

The Lakers are expected to have a top pick come June and with so many potential players available, it will be interesting to see which direction they go in.

One of you commenters “guaranteed” me he wasn’t coming out, citing your inside sources.Better get some new sources.I’ll say it again.Embiid is the player the Lakers need from this draft. Can we get that lucky?

  • Jim213

Although believe Lakers are out of the Embiid contention this is good given it deepens the top prospect contention.

It’s a lottery,Jim.When is the last time the worst team has gotten the top pick?Gotta hope for something good after this dismal season.Have a little faith….LOL.

      • Jim213

Who say’s the Lakers would get the #1? At best they’ll land 3rd or 4th in the lottery. IMO, Embiid will either go 1st or 2nd. Milwaukee will likely draft him.

        • independentbynature

That would be disappointing..Totally disagree about who plays the best defense, though.Exum can’t hold a candle compared to Embiid.I’m sure every GM in the NBA agrees with me there.

          • Jim213

Let’s see what develops but need to land at most a top 4 spot in the lottery to consider any of these two.

          • independentbynature

It’s been a long time since Lakers fans have been interested in the lottery.Or even the draft, really. Now,it’s all we got.Thanks,Jimmy.

            I meant Buss.LOL.Jimmy Buss.

        • independentbynature

And it will be in the top 3 or 5th,6th or worse if another team moves up..They can’t possibly land 4th with the lottery. They can only move past Utah for 5th.No other team is within reach. If you don’t land in the top 3,you don’t move up.

          • Jim213

Given Boston lost to the 76ers they’ll likely finish four in standings as the jazz are one win away from tying the Lakers for 5th worst tho head to head have the edge thus placing us 5th.

Given the inconsistencies with the roster and players playing they’ll likely end up with one win with 4 games remaining.

          • Jim213

Might as well make the most of it b/c things won’t be this bad (hopefully) next season as they can only improve.

        • Josh

All we know right now is that they will pick in the top 10. Depending on how much faith you put in Hollinger’s projecections, the Lakers will probably finish with the 6th worst record, which would have them picking top 3 or 6-9.

          Odds of picking:
          #1 – 6%
          #2 – 7%
          #3 – 8%
          #6 – 44%
          #7 – 31%
          #8 – 4%
          #9 – 0.1%

But the league office owes Mitch and JimBo, so I’m looking for some of that lottery night magic that the Bulls, Cavs, Wizards, and Pelicans have all experienced in recent years.

Like Jim123 mentioned, I like this not because Embiid is now available (he’s not my top choice), but a deeper draft means better choices. Imagine if Parker and Joel stayed? That’d make Exum possibly a #2 pick after Wiggins (and assuming the Lakers pick 5th or 6th, way out of their reach).

I trust that Mitch knows who to draft, but now I have my fingers crossed that Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon and Randle declare soon as well.

  • Loao

The Lakers must try to get Joel Embiid we need size in the middle of the paint.

  • LakersHeatBeef

Now we just need Jabari Parker and Julius Randle to declare and the top 6 is set.

  • johng_3

I see the Lakers getting the top pick as the NBA lottery is rigged

  • Will

Already injury prone. Greg Oden 2.0?
